Chapter 2

I made my way to Lukas's house. There were lots of cars in the driveway.

I knocked on the door, and his mom answered.

"Well, hello there, Jesse." She said. There was a crowd of people behind her.

"Hi. Is Lukas here?" I asked.

"Yes, he is. I'll get him." She turned around, and looked back at me. "Please, come in."

I stepped onto the carpet. There were so many people. It was getting a little overwhelming. I tried following his mom, but I got lost in the big crowd taking up the small house.

"There you are." I heard a voice say. I turned around. It was Lukas.

"How many people does your mom know?" I asked.

"I don't think she knows half the people. They're all friends of friends. I think."

"Oh, you must be Lukas!" Someone yelled. Lukas turned around, and an old woman, wearing a mountain of make up, hugged him. "Your ma has told me all about you." She said when she let go. "This must be your girlfriend. She's pretty." I blushed.

"She's not my girlfriend." He turned to me.

"Oh. Well, what's your name, dear?" She asked me.

"I'm Jesse." I said. I held out my hand, but she bear hugged me.

She let go of me, and I was breathing like I had just run a Marathon. "Call me Donna."

"Alright, well, we're gonna get going. It was nice meeting you." Lukas said.

"Alright, you go have fun, you two." Donna called, as we walked away. We gave each other this look saying "That was weird."

We pushed through the crowd of people and it was a relief to see the front door.
He opened it. The air smelled so fresh. The house was really cramped, and I don't think any of those people could breathe.

"A little earlier, I got a text from Aiden saying that he's throwing his own party. Wanna go?" Lukas said.

Well, of course I couldn't say no. If he wanted to take me out again, I had to go. "Sure." I agreed.

Lukas smiled, and we walked down the street to Aiden's house. There weren't any cars, none of us could drive yet. The house was large, and it looked like there were a lot of people inside. Maybe more people than there were in Lukas's house.

Lukas knocked on the door, and Aiden answered. "Hey! Lukas! And, Jesse."

"Good to see you, too." I said sarcastically.

"Come on." He walked out of the doorway, and into the house. We followed him. The house was dark, but there were colored lights all over the place. I didn't see Olivia or Axel, but Petra was just hanging out, acting like she didn't want to be there.

I've never been to a real party, before. Besides the one at Lukas's house. This one was loud, bright, and crowded.

"Isn't this great?" Lukas yelled, over the noise.

"It's a little loud!" I yelled, back.

"A little? This is crazy!"

"OK, I really don't wanna get lost, so please don't leave me!"

"I was just about to tell you that!" He turned around. "Now let's go have some fun!"

I tried my best to follow him. He was fast in this crowd. I was extremely slow. But every time I lost him, I found him talking to a friend.

"Hey, Luke!" I yelled.

"Yeah?"

"Can we slow down?" He stopped walking, and came up to me.

"You getting tired?"

"I'm exhausted! It's so loud! And there's too many people!"

Lukas looked behind him. "Just a little further, I promise!"

I groaned, and followed him through the crowd, and sat down at a bar. Aiden had a huge mansion, because he won all the building competitions. I didn't find it very fair. Last year, our fireworks went up in flames, because of him.

"Want something?" The man behind the counter asked.

"Oh, no. We don't drink." Lukas said. "Just a couple sodas. Is that OK, Jess?"

"Alright." I said.

"Two sodas. Got it." The man walked away.

Lukas smiled at me. I smiled, back.

The man came back, and put two sparkling drinks on the counter. Lukas took his, but he didn't drink it, he just sat there, moving it in circles, trying to make it flat.

The music got louder.

"So." Lukas began. "How you doing?"

I shrugged, and grabbed my drink. "Well, for starters, I'm at this party!"

"That's nice! How's Rueben?"

"Good! I guess! How's your life?" I asked.

"Good!"

"Good!"

The music was upbeat, loud, and made my heart pound in my throat.

"Jesse?" I turned around. Petra was sitting next to me. "What're you doing here?"

"Just hanging out here!" I replied.

"That's nice!" She paused. "So why are you really here?"

I sighed. "Luke brought me here! I honestly don't know if my mom knows I'm here!"

"My dad is asleep, right now! He has no idea I'm out of the house!"

"Awesome!"

The party went on for hours. I swear I almost saw the sun. I was exhausted, but Lukas seemed to be having a fun time, and I didn't want to ruin it for him. So I tried my best to stay up. But my vision was getting foggy, and my head was hurting.

"Jess? You doing OK?" Lukas asked.

"Yeah. Just a little tired." Like he heard me, over the blaring music.

"You want me to take you back?" I shook my head. "You look exhausted! Are you sure?"

I nodded. He sat down next to me. "I can take you back, it's OK!"

I yawned, and I gave it away. I was exhausted, but my head hurt really badly, and I could barely see.

"Come on!" He stood up. He took my hand, and pulled me off the chair. He pulled me through the crowd, and out the door. I followed him down the street, and eventually to my house.

"Thanks, Luke." I said.

"No problem. Now go get some rest. We have school, later."

"Alright. G'night." I opened the door.

"Night." He put his hands in his pockets.

"Bye." I closed the door.

I slipped off my shoes, and stretched. I walked down the hall, and into my bedroom. I fell onto my bed and immediately went to sleep. Parties definitely weren't my thing.
