Hermes wasn't surprised when you asked him out - he was the one who made things work for you, so you could try to propose to him in the first place. Being the messenger of the gods, it meant he knew everyone's matters and secrets, so your feelings toward him were something he was already aware of.

He was also aware of your shyness and how hard it was for you to approach him about your crush, so he tried to help you out. He would try to approach you first, without being too invasive, he would point out the places he likes - just in case you were thinking about bringing him somewhere but weren't sure about where - and would even reach the point of completing your sentences when he sees you are having troubles with it.

But he wanted you to take care of your feelings on your own. Hermes felt unnecessary his excessive help - if you relied too much on him, it would have been worse - and he also recognized your qualities, maybe too much obscured by your shyness.
