Chapter 12: Salvia

Dull eyes opened, lost in broken memories.

"Reina?"

She flinched, her stage name only a reminder of who she was. Looking around, her face scrunched up in confusion at the sight of her own room. "What happened?"

L let go of her hand, pulling his knees up to his chest. "Watari saved us."

She sat up, changed into one of his long sleeves. Biting her lip harshly, she dared not to meet his gaze, staring out the window. The sky was pitch black, no light glowing from the stars.

"Did they... Did I..."

The silence was deafening yet the answer couldn't have been louder. She had hoped the pain in her pelvic region held a different cause. She felt disgusting.

Her hands fisted the sheets beneath her as tears brimmed. She had never felt so ashamed in her life. For him to see that side of her was a nightmare. Her chest clenched, wanting nothing more than to die at that exact moment.

"Reina.. I-I.."

She looked up, laughing. "You're what? You're sorry?"

He closed his mouth, seeing the madness swirling in her eyes.

"You're sorry that you couldn't stop them from raping me? Well guess what? It wasn't rape." She smiled as tears began to escape. "I fuckin liked it. I enjoyed EVERY second of it!"

He remembered how she didn't struggle against their hold, allowing them to have their way. He remembered how her moans encouraged them, becoming a willing victim to their ceaseless pleasure. He remembered when their gaze met, her eyes were empty and unfamiliar.

"Are you surprised? Disgusted? Sickened by who I am?" She giggled, the sound deranged. He shuddered at the sight of her growing insanity, her cheeks flushed with desire yet eyes wide with burning self hatred. Tears continued to fall, Reina the perfect picture of suffering concealed by madness.

"Reina, listen to me-"

"This is who I am, Lawliet. It's who I've always been. You can't love me. I'm disgusting! A slut, a whore! A poor excuse of a woman who cannot love!"

He stood up sharply, the chair he was sitting on knocking over. "Stop it, Reina! That's not tr-"

"Lies!" She screamed, pressing her hands against her ears. "Leave! Lawliet, leave me alone."

"For Christ sake, Reina," he grabbed her arm, trying to get her to listen. She fought him, sobs racking her body.

Tearing her hands away from her head, he pinned them above her as she continued to struggle. "Get off me! Don't-!"

"LORRAINE!"

She stilled at the sound of her real name.

Their heavy breathing was the only thing that could be heard in the silence that overtook the room.

Suddenly wet drops fell onto her face, the source being his eyes.

"L-Lawliet?" she whispered, scared to see him cry for the first time.

"Don't." His voice cracked, sounding so defeated.

Her heart broke. "Lawliet..."

"W-When they... and I couldn't stop them.." A sob left his lips, shoulders trembling. "I didn't care what you had to do or what you have done. B-But when you looked at me and didn't see me.. I was so damn scared, Lorraine."

She couldn't breathe once their eyes finally met. Dark, terrified orbs consumed with deep longing, clouded with tears yet held so much love for the subject of his stare.

Her hand reached hesitating before softly wiping the traces of sadness away. He leaned into her touch, eyes closed with a pained expression.

"I love you." He opened those beautifully tragic eyes revealing the full extent of his emotions.

"I-I'm sorry," she whimpered, wanting so badly to say it back. "I d-don't know what that feels like."

"It's okay," his voice was above a whisper as he leaned forward. He kissed away her tears until none remained.
"I'll teach you, just as you taught me."

Reina leaned against the counter, absentmindedly stirring, watching the dark flecks drown in the murky liquid. A sigh escaped her pursed lips, seeing her own distorted reflection in the cup. Her mind wandered to the sleeping man back in her room, desperately trying to keep her feelings at bay. Love. What an absurd emotion.

"Penny for your thoughts?"

She looked up to see Watari smiling kindly with a coin twirling between his fingertips.

The girl chuckled, raising her brows. "I'm more expensive than that."

"What if I were to offer my retirement savings?" The old man joked, earning an amused laugh in return.

Bringing the mug to her lips, she sipped the hot liquid carefully. Watari asked, "How are you, kiddo?"

She shrugged. Finding out about how her previous Master was killed during the rescuing somehow did not bring any ounce of relief, as if there was something else missing from the puzzle.

"There's something I found," Watari stated, his face serious. He reached into his briefcase and handed her a small laptop. It seemed like an old model, manufactured in the early 2000's with scratches prominent all over the cover. "I found this. It is most likely affiliated with your old employer's human trafficking business."

"Thank you, Watari."

"Of course. It was my pleasure."

"Can you do me a favor and not tell L? I don't want him to worry."

He gave her a disapproving look before reluctantly nodding. "Alright. Also, Near is expecting you on Line 2."

Reina smiled brightly, giving Watari a quick peck on the cheek before dashing for the telephone.

"Near, I miss you!"

"Reinaaaaa when are you coming back? Mello is being an annoying little-"

"Goodmorning, Darling." Light smirked, walking into the kitchen in a loose fitted shirt and sweatpants. He pulled a cup from the cabinets and filled it with orange juice. Rolling back his shoulders and hearing the burden on his joints, he glanced at the dark haired girl lounging lazily on the couch as he drank. He noted the dark circles under her captivating eyes and how her wearing only a large T-Shirt made him recall their first encounter. He almost choked on his drink.

Reina glared, having no sleep last night due to the whole kidnapping incident.

"Ew." Sayu had her face scrunched up in disgust, not used to seeing her brother being an affectionate lover.

His mom laughed, cracking the egg before pouring its contents into the pan. "Okay, you two love birds. No funny business in the house! Please help set up breakfast, Light."

"Actually, Mom, I forgot to mention this but Reina and I are going on a breakfast date."

"We are?" The girl questioned, already having eaten a bowl of cereal. Seeing Light's pointed look and the mom's confused expression, Reina cleared her throat and nodded. "Oh yeah! I completely forgot, sorry, babe."

Reina found satisfaction in Light's uncomfortable reaction to his new pet name.

After getting ready, the pair left the house and took a taxi to their destination. Their surroundings flew by in a blur, prompting Reina to get lost in her thoughts. She recalled the night and the confession she received, cheeks flushing in embarrassment. She still remained reluctant to admit to her feelings, paranoia festering and growing.

"¥1620."

Once paid, they entered the buzzing cafe Light had chosen. With caramel painted walls and muted decor, the place had a warm and cozy environment. Being seated in a private booth in the very back, Reina allowed him to remove her coat before sitting across from him.

"All the surveillance cameras and wiretaps were removed last night." Reina stated, skimming through the menu. I want something sweet. Her mind flashed to Lawliet and his obsession for sugar.

"Am I not suspected anymore?"

"No but it is a good sign," she responded, not looking up.

"Where were you last night?" Light questioned.

"Out. Ooh, this looks scrumptious." Her eyes gleamed at the sight of the chocolate desert. However, upon looking at the price she frowned. "By the way, L is going to introduce himself to you during the college orientation."

"What?"

"¥2000, do they take me for a fool?" she mumbled to herself, glaring at the menu.

"What do you mean by introduce himself?"

"To observe your reaction, I suppose," she shrugged before waving down a waitress. "I'll have the Crème Brûlée and Vanilla Latte."

The petite worker nodded, scribbling down on her notepad before glancing at the attractive male that was seated across Reina. She blushed, tucking strands of hair behind her ear, "And for you, Mister?"

"I'm sharing with her," Light displayed a charismatic smile making her swoon internally. The worker finally did a once over of who he was referring to and her mood immediately soured, being bland compared to the foreign beauty. The sage patterned dress hugged her figure pleasantly, its shoulderless design revealing sunkissed skin clear of blemishes. This tempting woman seemed out of place in the small, normal coffee shop.

She nodded glumly before heading back to the kitchen.

"Our waitress was practically drooling over you." Reina giggled, Light ignoring how addicting it sounded.

He cocked an arrogant brow, "Jealous, darling?"

She blew him a kiss, "You're not worth it, babe."

Light chuckled, enjoying their petty flirting. Now that he thought about it, when was the last time he genuinely enjoyed the company of another? He could not think of an instance.

"Please kill me." Ryuk groaned, face planting into plants on display. "I've never felt more single in my entire life."

"You could always join, Shinigami," the woman smiled flirtatiously, trying to contain her fits of giggles. Light smothered his laugh by pretending to cough and clearing his throat.

"I'm going to write your names in my Death Note." the Death God grumbled before turning away to find some apples.

"Now, Light, back to business. I need your help with something." The Seductress stated, pulling the laptop from her bag. She slid it over to him before standing up, taking a seat beside him. He turned it on and the screen lit up to reveal a password protected database. "This was taken from the man who was in charge of me when I was placed in the human trafficking system. I need you to tell me if there's any valuable information."

Light glanced at her clenched fists before his hands tapped away on the computer, figuring out an alternative route around the password. "This man was obviously not of high intellect. There's barely any protection."

He filtered the files by name, finding one labeled 'REINA'.

"Wait, don't-"

Click. Pictures popped up. A dark haired little girl performing sexual acts in every photo. The laptop was slammed closed.

Light felt like he had seen something he wasn't supposed to. He asked carefully, "Was that you..?"

Her eyes were cold. An icy storm brewed in those chilling irises. It desperately tried to hide the vulnerability of her youth.

"I'm sorry, it was my fault. I won't ask questions." He awkwardly apologized, not used to this guilty feeling. Her expression softened, sighing. "Just please delete all traces of these kinds of photos."

He nodded, allowing her to watch as he did.

The pain..The pleasure..Their laughs.. Her screams.. Reina bit the inside of her cheek as she relived her childhood. A certain picture popped up and her hands began to shake. This certain experience was one of the most horrific. Her client had Renfield's syndrome, an obsession with blood.

"Reina?" Without realizing, she had stopped Light by grabbing his arm, digging her nails into his skin. She let go. "S-Sorry."

She drew a deep breath, "I need you to find the monsters involved in this."

Tap. Tap. Tap. A list of names appeared. "These are the names of all the clients. I also found out this business is backed up by a wealthy company in the USA."

Her eyes absorbed the screen in front of her. Finally. All these men will pay.

"Christian Lambert." He recognized the name of the renowned businessman from Italy. He had even written his senior thesis on the reputable man.

"I remember him. Renfield's syndrome." She laughed dryly, finally knowing his identity. "He tied me up and gagged me. He cut me up with his switchblade, watching the blood trickle as he fucked me senseless. He licked and slurped the dark liquid that left my wounds with a hard on. I was 7 years old."

Kira froze, his hands stuck hovering over the keyboard. His expression contorted to that of shock, horror and disgust. He knew of the cruelty of the world they lived in but not to this extent. To find out a man who he had admired as one of the most successful entrepreneurs was absolutely horrifying. And to discover what he had done to a mere child. Light tasted bile in his mouth, nauseated and revolted.

"Do you see now?" Her eyes held a darkness that matched his own, tongue dipped in poison. "I need you, Kira, to punish these men. They don't deserve a peaceful death but one of agony."

Reina grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, pulling him into her. Their noses barely touched, allowing him to see the utter graveness in her command. "Help me fuck them up so badly, they'll wish they were dead."

The Murderess in front of him enticed him. The madness and bloodlust in her voice was undeniably seductive to Kira, finally someone that shared his insanity.

"Your wish is my command, darling."

His lips met hers in a feverish heat. He wanted to own her, possess her. She was different. She understood. She was suitable for Kira.

I want her.

She will be mine.
