Leaving.
Barbara's POV
I peek my head through the garden's entrance. Dick's curled up with his head in his hands in front of his parent's grave. I silently walk towards him. I sit next to him.
"I saw what you did last night." Dick whispers. "And the amazing thing is, no one will ever know."
"Know what?" I ask.
"How much harder it is for the rest of us." Dick looks up. "Seeing my friends get more and more powerful." He pauses. "Powerful. All of them." He lies back onto the grass and so do I. I rest my head on his chest. "They'll never know how tough it is. To be the one who isn't chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, but never step in it." It shocks me how true his words are. "But I know. I see more than anybody realises because nobody's watching me." He sits up and faces me. "But I saw you last night." Dick takes both my hands. "You're not special." He pauses for a moment. "You're extraordinary."
4:27am
My phone buzzes. I pick it up and hold it to my ear.
"Speak." I command sleepily.
"You need to get to the cave now." Bruce's voice says from the other end. "It's about Dick."
One short motorcycle ride later...
"What happened?" I yell, throwing my helmet on the floor.
"Dick and I...we had a fight. He stormed off, and I thought he went to his room, but when I came back down to the cave, I found this." Bruce hands me a piece of paper.
Bruce, Babs and Alfred.
I'm leaving my position as Robin.
I've realised now that I have to find my own path as a hero. One uniquely mine. I can't do that as Robin.
Bruce, you've taught me everything I needed to fight. But not what I needed to be a hero.
I'm joining a team based in Jump City, the Teen Titans. I should be back to visit soon, though. Don't worry about me, just keep doing your things.
-D. Grayson.
P.S: Bruce, don't you dare read the letter I left for Babs.
I hand the letter back to Bruce, but he places an envelope in my hand.
"I'll...let you adjust." Bruce and Alfred make their way upstairs. I follow suit, but go to my room. I find a black package on my bed marked 'from the Former Boy Wonder'. I grab it as climb on to the roof.
I slowly open the paper. A photograph of Dick and I on our first day at GA. Our first date. My first day as Batgirl. Dick's favourite hoodie. An old black sketchbook.
I pull on the hoodie and breathe in his scent. One that used to be the most comforting smell on the planet. Telling me everything was okay. That at least one person loves me. That I had a friend.
I tear open the envelope.
There's no easy way to put this, Babs.
I'm leaving.
I can't handle Bruce anymore. What he said today is something that he can tell you himself.
It's pretty cowardly of me to admit to all these things in a letter, but I knew that if I told you in person, I wouldn't leave. I couldn't.
Babs, you are literally my entire world. We're the Dynamite Duo, the Teen Wonders. We're always going to be the Dynamite Duo. Nothing will ever change that. Ever.
My home will always be where you are. Fiery hair and all.
I love you, Barbara Gordon.
I love you so much that I have to leave you.
I'll be back. Just not yet. I have to have my own adventure. Know my limits as Dick, not as Robin.
Yours, forever and always,
Dick Grayson.
Former Boy Wonder, Pixie Boots, Shorty and every other nickname you call me.
I think I'm crying. Oh my god, keep it together, Gordon. Dick is gone. He's gone.
Dick's POV
I watch Babs read my letter. I wish I could just run over and hug her and kiss her and hold her one last time before I leave. But if I did, I couldn't go.
