roommate (intro)🍂

This is a true story.

As it is obvious by now, English is not my mother tongue, Sinhala is. I've being writing fanfiction in Sinhala for a while now but this shall be my first translated fiction thanks to PunariHimara who spared her time to make it work and translate it for me. You could also check on my sinhala version if you are familiar with the language.Thank you so much for this and for spending so much time with me.

This is a story based on a real life situation.

The storyline flows around a handsome Sri Lankan and a cute boy from Thailand. At the moment, both of them are stuck in a foreign country, fighting against the covid-19 pandemic.

The said Sri Lankan had coincidentally read one of my stories and sent me a message expressing his regards for being among the very few Sri Lankans who doesn't show sexuality based prejudice. This is how i came across their story of a unique relationship carved from various challenges and obstacles. The society is against them. Now has the Mother Nature.

Actually, I fell for their story at once. Day by day they unfolded their story to me, all the time revealing their deathly situation, uncertainty of their survival amongst the withering bodies, the victims of the pandemic falling day by day around them. This life and death situation encouraged them to share with me every significant nook and corner of their story, with only a small but immensely significant expectation:

Sri lanka is a tiny island. Hence, homosexuality is one hell of a strangeness, an oddity, in other words, a magic to most sri lankans. This notion is general to most countries. Therefore this sweet love begins as an acceptance, an embracement of a great challenge. It influenced our said brother at a higher leve. It affected both of them equally.

Okay then, let me end my indiscreet blabbering and step on to unfold the short chronicle. Stay tuned with the story till the end. I lovingly request my audience to read the story and comment your views. To a tinsy author like myself, your feedback will be invaluable.

I expect to do our said brothers a justice through my story to the best of my abilities. The one thing they expect is to express how they are pushed to a corner due to the inconsistent labelling of this judgemental society and to empathize with them and with their feelings when they are overlooked as queers.

However, I will not give you their real information. But I've substituted them to two protaganists of a Thai bl series, "Untill We Meet Again." (The said actors are said to suit the description of my story's protagonists.)

Shehan

M

................................................................

The final school year is a significantly decisive face of a young man's life. There is no success in life without entering university. So Shehan concluded to endure all the turmoil of two and a half years of tedious and somewhat hideous studying and face the final exams.

Naturally, the end of A/Ls becomes a wordless pleasure to most. Shehan was not an exception. He was also among the juvenile celebrators.

However, after all the fuss and mess of school life, Shehan had to fly overseas for his higher education. Him being the sole male heir from two other little sisters, the family responsibility naturally falls upon Shehan.

Even though his parents were reluctant to send their only son abroad, their disinclination s were soon subdued because there was another older relative studying in the university of Shehan's choice.

So, finally, Shehan goes overseas expecting to pursue his studies for 4 years. There was an apartment complex within the university premises itself for its students to accommodate while following their related courses of studies. A single apartment is usually shared among a few so are the expenses related to lodgings.

Shehan was not fortunate enough to aquatint with any fellow Sri Lankans. Therefore he was compelled to lodge with two indian boys. The boys seemed to be pleasant individuals. The three of them developed a close friendship in no time.

After a time, they were joined by a younger brother of one of the two Indian boys. Since the apartment couldn't support comfortable lodgings for more than three individuals simultaneously, the two boys, Shehan and Cheera, were left for themselves for the two brothers left seeking another apartment.

Cheere and Shehan were coerced into a tight spot. The expenses when divided only among two was tad bit overwhelmed their budget. So, the two friends had to display a notice of the latest vacancy including ways of contact.

During those times one of Cheera's friends contacted him informing about a young Thai man around their own age looking for lodgings with Asians because of his fear to lodge with Americans. Shehan was not happy when Cheere relayed this bit of detail on him. "I don't think it is going to work," was Shehan's response.

The Thai boy had requested to meet separately without directly visiting them at their apartment evoking Shehan's suspicions. Moreover Shehan didn't have any idea about Thai boys. And the timidity of the said boy to meet separately spoke volumes. Shehan doubted his ability to live with them without any issues.

However, finally, Cheera pushed his friend to meet the boy finally.

Shehan's suspicions were further fueled shocking the two friends when they met at the appointed place. He had come with an older lady! Probably his mother or a guardian of sort. The Thai boy didn't utter a single word throughout the length of their conversation. The main and sole contributor of the talk was the lady as if she was the one to come and live with them. The boy hadn't even made a stray gasp!

As the discussion stretched the Thai boy's name was revealed to be M and the lady a sort of an aunt. Throughout the conversation m, scrutinized his soon to be roommates thoroughly but under his lashes and at once judged Cheera to be a good fellow with his friendly temperament. But such conclusions couldn't be presented about Shehan.

Em had been going to university while taking shelter from the said Auntie's place Which was located a bit far away from the University. Because of the difficulties of traveling and the time wasted on the road (not to mention being a burden to rhe afore mentioned family), em decided to move to the university provided accommodations. During this search the lady came across the latest vacancy and talked about it with Em.

"Son, I'm coming with you..." was how their talk ended. But Em wasn't happy to be chaperoned. It would obviously make him look childish. He thought it to be a shame for the other boys were also his own age. But all the lady said was, "I've being your guardian for all this time and your responsibility lies upon me."

Back on to the conference, while the lady was inquiring for details she abruptly asked, "do you boys have separate room?"

Shehan and Cheera shared a glance. Seeing this, Em was reduced to a shrunken ball of shame internally. It was so embarrassing!

Then Cheera volunteered, "There are two rooms for us. You could share mine" with a wink. That brought a smile of relief to Em's lips. Shehan's stoic and strict nature scared Em to the bones.

However on the other side Shehan's thoughts were on the Thai boy's appearance. 'The boy is so pretty ad a picture,' thought Shehan. The laid back nature and the soft beauty caught his eye.

Finally after everything has been gone through and discussed, the two parties shared contact means and departured. On the way home the two friends had a good laugh reminiscensing their past conference. The scene with "separate rooms" was the nost laughable.

A couple of days later saw Em's arrival at his new habitat. The apartment touched his heart in the best of ways. The previous tenants haven't even thought about putting the kitchenette into use. They had been surviving from takeaways afor all this time.

Better yet, Em had learned the art of cuisine from his mother. It was not a surprise for the boy name the most delicious of meals. All in all, Em volunteered to take charge of dinner, fo the lectures during the mornings and afternoons allowed the three to get together only at the evening. Shehan and Cheera happily accepted the agreement. The cost for food was divided evenly among the three friends.

Em was immaculate. His housekeeping skills were neat and tidy. While dusting and arranging their kitchenette Em made the first steps towards getting personal. "Are you both South Indian or Northern?" Em asked with a friendly smile dancing mildly on his lips.

Cheera's comical reply was, "I'm southern. But my friend here is way, way down south," with a small laugh. Em shared alternative looks between the two latest roommates with wide eyes. His confusion clearly plastered on his face. He couldn't get Cheera's joke. The two South Asian boys understood Em's plight and Shehan decided to speak, "I'm Sri Lankan." A ghost of a smile was playing on his face which finally broke into a shy chuckle, but genuine.

It was then when Em got to know about Shehan's nationality. With it, Em came to a conclusion that Indians are dark in complexion and all Sri Lankans are closer to the reds of Americans.
