🔸3 - Promise🔸

Guilt.

Selfishness.

Ignorant.

Rude.

The light element was lying down on his soft bed as he stared at the ceiling, his mind wandering in thought of how foolish a brother he was to his only little sibling.

He loves his little brother, Thorn very much.

But, does he even show his love and care for his young brother?

He sighed sadly, thinking how he was so unfair to his little sibling.

Thorn always gave all his love and concern for his big brother, but him?

He didn't gave anything at all.

He was so selfish to his little brother.

He just wasted all his time doing his paper works without even achieving anything from it.

But, why did he even chose to do those science experiments and paper works in the first place?

The reason, he was working hard just to help himself and his little brother.

Ever since their dad left, ever since their mother passed away, Solar started working for his little brother and himself just to earn some money for their needs.

But, why does it feel like he was only making things worst for him and his little brother?

Then, he thought.

He could've spend more time with his little brother rather than sitting on a chair and trying to mix some dangerous liquids inside his room.

Maybe, Thorn only wanted to get his attention to stop pushing himself to the limit from working.

Maybe, he was overworking too much that he'd already forgot about his little brother.

Then, he thought about the fight that just took place.

He didn't want any of that to happened.

But, it did.

It broke his heart whenever he replayed that time about what he said during the fight and what his little brother had said before he left him alone.

"I don't need nor want a brother like you."

"Thank you for being honest with me, big brother."

Honest.

What does he mean?

Then he thought about it.

He thinks deeply in his mind, trying to figure out what Thorn meant about that statement.

Until realization hits him and a question suddenly appeared in his mind...

'Did he thought I was lying about what I've said before?'

He paused and closed both of his eyes as he remembered that time.

"Am I the worst brother ever?" His little brother, Thorn, asked him while pouting.

"Huh? What makes you say that?", asked the light element.

"Since, I made terrible things to you?" The leaf element said, avoiding his big brother's gaze at him.

Solar smiled sadly, placing a hand on his little brother's shoulder and faced him.

"You are far from being the worst. Thorn, you are the best brother I've ever had, and I'm thankful for having you as a brother."

As he said that, Thorn smiled widely and tackled his big brother to a warm, bear hug.

"Thank you, big brother." The little leaf elemental said, smiling warmly while still hugging his light elemental big brother.

Then, it hit him.

Thorn did remembered that memory.

He now thinks his big brother was a liar.

An ignorant, selfish, rude liar.

His heart ached when he came up to the point that his only, innocent little brother now thinks of him as a liar.

Then, he felt like his heart dropped when he suddenly remembered a hurtful memory from his past that he would never ever forget.

A sound of wheels could be heard screeching from the cement floor.

Faint, desperate shouts echoed across the long hallway.

The heart rate from the heartbeat monitor beeped fastly.

A sound of a woman could be heard coughing from her hospital bed.

"Mommy!" Thorn screamed, banging the window outside of the patient's room.

It was their mother, inside the patient's room.

"Mom!" Solar cried, trying to reach his hand for his mother to hold him but, the nurse was pulling him out of the room.

"Kid. You have to wait outside!" The nurse warned him but the light elemental ignored him as he tried freeing himself from the nurse's arms.

And he did.

He ran towards his mother and gently held her hand.

"I'm sorry I won't be there for you and your little brother..." His mother said as she held Solar's hand tighter but gently, with tears escaping from her jade, green eyes.

"No, Mom! Please don't die! You're the only family we got!" Solar stammered, his puffy, golden eyes were filled with tears.

"Solar..." His mother smiled weakly as she reached her hand to Solar's face and gently caress his son's cheek.

"You've been a good, big brother. You always are and always will." She softly said, wiping a tear that shed down from Solar's eyes.

"Mom..." The light element sobbed as he held his mother's hand from his cheek.

"Promise me something..."

Solar slowly looked at his mother.

"Promise me, you'll take care of your little brother, no matter what happens." She said, looking through his son's golden eyes with a weak smile.

Solar nodded, a tear escaped from his eyes.

"I will, Mom. I promise."

She smiled weakly as she held her son's hand with her soft, pale hand one last time, looking straight into her son's bright, golden eyes.

Their mother gave all of her strength to say her final words for her children.

"I will always love you so much, my dear Solar. And, I will always love your little brother, Thorn as well. You two will forever be in my heart."

Solar's heart ached, squeezing his mother's hand gently.

"I love you too, Mom..."

When all of the sudden....

TOOOOOOOOOOOT!

The line on the heartbeat monitor turned into a straight line.

Her heart stopped beating.

.    .    .

Solar went outside his mother's patient's room as he walked towards his little brother, his golden eyes were wide and tired from crying.

"So, brother? How was mom? Is she gonna be okay?" Thorn asked, full of hope in his eyes.

Solar tried not to shed another tear and slowly shook his head while looking at his little brother sadly.

"I'm sorry, Thorn..."

He heard his little brother gasped in shock, his faint sobs were heard.

Solar could only crouched down at his level and pulled him into an embrace, his golden eyes started to tear up again.

The light element felt something liquid from his cheek and touched it.

A tear.

He was crying.

He was crying the whole time.

Solar promised something from his mother and he had to fulfill that promise.

He has to make things right.

He needed to apologize to his little brother and it was time to bring him back home.

Since, he's the only family he had.

No time to waste, he got up from his bed and went straight downstairs.

He opened the door and noticed the rain had stopped pouring.

He was relieved by it and closed the door behind him, starting to find his only family he had.

Thorn.
