Chapter 4- Josh

Picture above is of Erin. I couldn't find one I liked with golden eyes so just imagine this picture has golden eyes... Oh and also this isn't edited, sorry!!!

Erin and I were thrown into a crumbling wall by the force of the explosion. Luckily the land mine was ten metres off from us so we weren't obliterated on the spot but the impact hurt. As I pushed myself up, I heard a click. Erin grabbed me, dragging me over the wall just as the next bomb blew up. Rubble was sailed over our heads but we were shielded from it. "Thanks," I said to Erin.

"Don't mention it," she replied. "How the hell are those land mines going off? We're nowhere near them."

"I don't know!" I shouted over another bomb. They seemed to be getting closer and closer to us.

"We can't just sit here," Erin cried. There was another clicked and a quiet whirr just as the next bomb went off. Erin and I ducked as debris rained down on us. I looked up to where I thought the click came from. To my surprise, there was a security camera mounted on the wall of a ruined skyscraper. "The camera!" I yell at Erin. "Someone is setting them off by using the camera!" She gave me a quick nodded before vaulting over the wall into a series of tremendous flips. We didn't ever have to use telepathy for me to know what she was doing.

She dodged the different explosions as I crept closer and closer to the camera which was trying to keep up with Erin's ridiculous movements. I hated that Erin had to be in the firing line but the was no way that I could move as fast as she could. This time I had no choice.

I pressed my back to the wall. The camera was just above me. I jumped up and snatched the black wire that connected it to whatever power supply was in the wall. The camera went limp and the explosions stopped.

Erin stumbled through the ruined desolated pavement and road towards me. "You stopped it?" she panted, her hands on her knees.

"Yeah," I said, looking up at the camera. "But I think we should check it out. You stay here and catch your breath, I'll see what I can find in that building." I left her sitting on a big chunk of concrete, gulping water out of her bottle and nibbling on a breakfast bar.

I moved around to what was once the front entrance. The road in front had a dozen smaller craters that had been created by the bombs just a minute ago. They must have been only for scaring people away...but the question was, what from?

The door had been glass and automatic but now it was shattered and completely ripped off the hinges. From the look of it inside, it looked like it was a bank. Cash machines were scattered across the ragged carpet and desks were upturned everywhere.

I picked my way through the glass towards where the camera was on the outside. A small black box was screwed onto the wall on this side with a label stuck on it: Brown Industries. That name seemed familiar but I couldn't think from where. I opened the box, taking a look inside. It was a mess of wires all connected to the same battery. Sighing, I began to work on detangling them so I could get to the battery. If we come across another one of these traps and knew how it works, hopefully we'd be able to disarm them more quickly.

As I worked, I thought about what I had said to Erin last night. I didn't tell her but of course I saw what she was dreaming about. The thing was, what could I say to her? I didn't blame her for shooting me in a dream. It was a dream, it didn't matter. I knew what she was really scared of was killing someone and her dream reflected that.

But she was going to have to. I didn't like to say it but when we find Charles Hunt, she was going to have to kill him for our own sake. I know it sounds selfish, but I couldn't keep on taking the beatings they gave me as punishment. Of course, I would always take them if it means Erin didn't get hurt but one day, they're going to lose patience and will go too far. When that day comes, Erin won't be able to heal me.

And that means we're both dead.

I yanked the battery free finally and turned it over in my hands. The same label was stuck on it saying: Brown Industries. Well, that was our next stop at least.

I stuffed the battery into my rucksack and walked back out to where Erin was sitting. Her cheeks were still a bit pink but she looked like she had recover from her little burst of energy. "You find anything?" she asked.

"Yeah," I said. "The power box that powered the camera had a label on it saying 'Brown Industries.' I'm guessing that whoever installed it got their parts from there." Erin pulled out the Ipad from her bag and typed something in. We were technically searching Triple's data base, not the internet. That hasn't worked in years.

"Here," Erin said, turning the tablet around. "Brown Industries is a thirty blocks from here. Says it's been abandoned for years since the New York attack but I bet you there's a black market going on there. They're probably selling the parts that they found in there to anyone who's interested. We'll meet some unsavoury characters but then again, it might be our chance find Charles Hunt."

"It's not like we can't handle it," I muttered.

"The good news is that our bullet case will open on the way there," Erin said. I nodded.

"OK, you alright to go now?" Erin rolled her eyes at me.

"I'm fine, Josh," she said. "It was a quick run around, that's all. Anyone would get out of breath. You worry too much." I felt the heat rise to my cheeks. She was right. I do worry too much and I am over protective but when you're working for a terrorist organisation, there was no such thing as being overly cautious.

"We better get going," I said. "We'll want to be there before dark. I don't want to meet the people on these streets at all, even less if we can't see them." I shouldered my pack and started heading off down the block with Erin next to me. On the way, we kept an eye out for anymore cameras, not wanting to set off another chain of explosions.

Normally, thirty blocks would take someone thirty minutes to an hour but ever since the attack, we had to avoid collapsing buildings, blocked streets and avenues, even the odd person with a gun. We tried to keep a low profile. The world knew that we existed but they didn't know who we were or what we can do. Triple wouldn't be too pleased if everyone suddenly knew who we were just because we attacked one guy picking his way through the destroyed streets. It could have been spotted by anyone or anything. Triple would have our heads for that.

It was the end of the day by the time we made it to Brown Industries and the sun was setting in the sky. I looked up at the dark building, taking in where all the threats could spring up. It seemed quiet...too quiet.

"You sure this is the place?" I asked Erin.

"Yeah," she replied. "This is definitely it." I cocked my head to the side, trying to listen for any sounds coming from the factory. Suddenly, I heard a clang, like someone dropping a piece of metal. We both whipped out our hand guns from our belts. We had loaded the bullets earlier on that day when the case opened.

Going back to back, like we had trained for years before, we slowly circled around, looking for any signs of life. Ten minutes past and there was still nothing. "There's no one here, Erin," I finally whispered.

"There is," she said. "This is a high value place to be in a war. There's someone here." Her eyes were sharp as she pieced the darkness with them.

"Erin," I sighed. "The information must be out of date. There isn't-" There was a click right next to my ear. A gun loading. Erin and I were suddenly surrounded by men all with guns.

"You folks better clear out of here," the man holding the gun to my head growled. "Only business folks gather here, and you don't look like your here for business." All of the men loaded their guns. But all I could think of that moment was how I let my guard down and practically let them creep up on us. I slowly turned to face the man about to kill me, my arms raised.

I had to get us out of this mess.
