Scary and psychic
"...As I've said, my part in this was that I allowed my brother to housesit for a lot longer than I should've. There was no money involved, I don't think this qualifies as illegal subletting as there was no gain on my part." I explain. My plane arrived in Seattle at around 7 a.m, I had to meet with my lawyer soon after meaning I was running on no sleep and three cups of coffee.
"Right," Jenna says, nodding her head and pushing back her glasses. "And what was the reason for you leaving?"
"Ma'am, with all due respect I don't think that's necessary information. My client has expressed his side of the story, aside from the damages which he's more than willing to pay for, I don't see this as being relevant to the situation." Keisser, my lawyer answers on my behalf.
"I understand you're doing your job but as far as I can see, your client is sitting right here in this very room, unlike mine." She turns to me. "Why did you allow your brother to stay that long knowing you wouldn't be back as soon as you might've thought?"
I breathe out. "My brother is in between jobs, he also happens to be a recovering addict with nowhere to stay. He has no money or transportation, I saw that as an opportunity to give him the responsibility to stay and watch over my apartment while I tended to business in London. I thought I was leaving it in the hands of someone capable but unfortunately I misjudged." I say, following the exact lines Keisser told me to say, I see him nod through the corner of my eye.
At this, Jenna nods and flips through some more papers. "Mr. Styles, are you aware that your recovering addict brother was selling drugs from your very own apartment? Not to mention the loud parties he was throwing, disrupting the nearby neighbors at all hours of the night?"
Keisser turns to me and I look down in a hint of shame. "As I said, I misjudged." I say, looking towards her. "Look, we both know what a pain in the ass it'll be to take this situation to court over a few broken windows and door handles. As my lawyer said, I am more than willing to repay the cost of the damages done. I'd even be willing to throw some extra money for any future remodeling of the building."
"Mr. Styles, I can assure you I wasn't sent here to be bribed."
"It's not a bribe but a contribution for any disturbance my brother may have caused." At this, Jenna closes her folder and nods.
"I will have to run this by my client before I get back to you." She says, standing up. "In the meantime, don't leave the U.S." She nods and walks away without any word else. I stand up, pinching the bridge of my nose in annoyance.
"Don't leave the U.S? My plan wasn't to stay for more than a few hours." I complain.
"This is good, trust me. If the building manager is smart he'll take the deal." Keisser pats my back, giving me some sort of hope. He's been my lawyer for years now, there wouldn't be a reason for me not to trust him on this. His phone rings and he takes it. "I'll call you as soon as I get word from Jenna." With that, I'm alone. I take a few minutes to myself, looking through the windows down at the city below.
Seattle was not as bad as New York, I'm sure I can try and deal with it for what I hope is less than a week. Just as I was walking out of the building, phone in hand, someone bumps into me and when I look the face that stared back at me seemed startled.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" They rambled but stop almost immediately. "Harry?" The black hair and green eyes seemed familiar to me and my memories come flooding back.
"Cami?" I question, hoping I got her name right. I wasn't exactly in my right state of mind when I first met her, I might've just offended her by calling her the wrong name for all I know.
She grins and nods, recollecting herself. "Hey! It's been a while since I've seen you around."
"Well I haven't exactly been around much." I say.
"No, of course. Duh." Duh. Were all the Smith sisters the same? "Heard you moved to the UK?"
Did Beau tell her? Who am I kidding, of course she probably did. She also probably told her how much of a piece of shit I am. "I thought it was time, America wasn't really cutting it for me."
"Hmm," She trails off, squinting her eyes at me suspiciously. "You sure that was it?" Oh great, she's mad at me. I mean, it'd be weird if she wasn't. I put her sister through hell, proposed to her and ran out the last minute like a little bitch.
"No other reason I can think of," I say, clearing my throat. "What are you doing here?" I ask in hopes the subject changes.
"Came to see my incompetent lawyer." She rolls her eyes as she walks around me, towards the door. "Apparently we're in that day of age where even if you were a single mother for years, if you make more money than parent number two they're entitled to half of that. You'd think he'd be doing this because he wanted to actually see his kid—" She stops herself. "Sorry, I don't mean to bother you with little people problems."
Little people?
"I'm sorry?" I take it she's the scary sister.
"Yeah you know, big CEO and whatnot." She waves me off. And that's how I know Beau has probably told her everything. No one knew how much that kind of talk bothered me more than she did.
"Well, I hope your problem gets settled. I've got a good legal team in case you were searching," I stop myself. "Although I wouldn't want to offend the 'little people' by suggesting."
Cami smirks. "Beau warned me you might do that." I purse my lips at this. I should be the last person to ask Cami about Beau, I don't think I'm allowed to, to be honest. I know for a fact if someone hurt my sister I'd kill them the second they mention their name. "Does it hurt?"
I look up at her. "What?"
"Are you wondering whether or not you should ask about Beau?" Scary and psychic, apparently. "Go ahead, ask." Was that a trick question? Is she going to tell me to mind my own business and fuck off?
Shit. Whatever it is I wanted to ask has now slipped my mind. Whatever, just think of something! "How is she?"
Cami rolls her eyes. "She's fine, she's a big girl."she waves me off. "But of course, you know this." Of course I did. She was the strongest woman I've ever met, I've seen it up close and personal even when I wish I hadn't.
I nod. "Yeah." Cami was about to go inside but she stops. "I don't want you to take this the wrong way." Here it comes. "Don't look for her, okay? Just—stay away from my sister. She doesn't need whatever it was you put her through the first time."
I nod. I had no intentions on looking for her. I love Beau, but Cami is right. This was never even supposed to happen to begin with. "I won't."
"Thanks." She smiles my way and disappears inside the building I just walked out of.
