Chapter 8
"Son of a bitch..." Charles sighed as he knelt down.
"Could he still be alive?" Marion asked, hoping against hope.
"I have no idea, maybe if we get a team out here for an emergency we'd be able to get more answers." Charles said as he stood up to look at Marion. "I'll go radio for help, you want to come with me?"
Marion was still in shock as she looked around the room and then to Charles. Shaking her head, she watched as he took off to find the way out that the others used to get in. Looking around the room, there were bodies all around. Going from body to body she took what guns she could find as well as the ammo. Coming to a rifle, she wondered if it had night scope on it and to her luck it did.
Going back to the gap, she aimed the rifle down hoping she would be able to see something or someone. However it showed nothing but abyss. Sighing in defeat she put the gun down and lowered her head. Charles came back quickly and saw she had collected all the weapons from the bodies but just held the rifle in her hand as she looked down into the gap.
"They're on their way, rescue crew as well. Come on, we'd better get up there." Charles said as he helped her up.
"He didn't deserve that, not that kind of death." Marion mumbled as she walked out with Charles.
Sitting up beside the dig site, Marion couldn't help but think back to the look of shock on Derrick's face. How could she have forgotten about that woman? Charles sat down beside her.
"It's not your fault, I should have shot her and none of this would have happened." Charles said as he cleaned his gun.
"She was in my grasp, I should have just cracked her neck and ended her." Marion said with a deadly serious tone.
Charles paused and looked at Marion, she saw the pendant around her neck was now a green color.
"Marion, hand me the necklace, it's affecting you too much." Charles said as Marion looked at him.
"What? You mean because I dared to think of killing that evil woman?" she asked, shocked.
"No, because it's green and I don't know what that means." he says pointing to it.
Marion looked down and quickly took off the necklace and sat it down beside her. Charles moved Marion and himself away from it as small sparks seemed to come out of it. Neither had any idea why it would do such a thing.
"What's happening?" Charles asked.
"I don't know, none of the studies ever mentioned that." Marion replied.
The rescue team arrived with the curator. He put the necklace in a glass container and kept it with him.
"Sir, can that necklace make someone evil?" Charles asked the curator.
"Sir, this is not supposed to exist. It was to give one more power than the Pharaoh, it would take the soul of the wearer as payment for such powers." the curator told Charles who made him look at Marion shocked. "Not it's tried but something fought back and she is still herself, please though, once you can come back to the museum we must find a way to destroy it."
Charles nodded in agreement. They had no idea how to destroy it but the fake one was much easier to destroy. The curator left to hide the pendant as the rescue team went deep into the gap which did turn out to have an ending. However the four bodies they pulled out were not of Derrick, the woman or Gerald.
"Where are they?" Marion asked as she looked at Charles.
"Something is up, they won't give up that easily." he replied as he went to walk off but Marion held his arm making him pause.
"Who was your contact for finding out where the pendant would be sold?"
"The curator's son, he owed me a favor."
What if the curator was behind this as well? Both seemed to be thinking the same question. They had to be cautious and find out quickly, especially since Charles had just handed him the pendant.
Marion and Charles had barely made their way into the office of the curator when the phone started to ring. Both of them panicked looking back from one to the other as Charles picked up the phone, deepened his voice and did his best impression of the curator.
"Hello?" Charles said, acting like the curator.
"Is it done? Are they all dead? Those three will be nothing but trouble in the future, we cannot possibly achieve our goal with them around." another male answered.
"I'm working on that now, they aren't easy to deal with." Charles replied completely gobsmacked, he knew the man was talking about him, Marion and Derrick.
"The woman gave you the pendant, handing the power back to us. Now we shall rule anything and everything." the male laughed. "People go missing in the desert all the time, use that idea if you wish."
The phone went dead and Charles hung the phone up. Marion could see the look of worry on his face. He had no idea who he was just talking to, but he knew they were out to kill him and Marion and Derrick.
"The curator is in on it, that man who just called, only called to find out if we were dead yet." Charles said as he began searching around the room.
"Dead? This is madness, why in the world would they actually want to kill us?" Marion asked as she followed Charles around the room.
"Because we are a threat? We have powerful people in both of our families, at least from an archaeological standpoint." Charles shrugged.
"Another reason why killing us would not be the best idea, it would draw attention and not the good kind." Marion pointed out.
Charles paused, she made a good point. Their families would know that they were too smart to just go missing in the sand. Opening the desk drawer, Charles pulled out a revolver and loaded in with the ammo there in the desk.
"I suggest you find some weapons as well, if they wanna take us out, we are going to give them one hell of a fight." Charles said as he looked up at her.
Looking around the office, she could see many forms of ancient weapons. However, remembering something an old friend had taught her, she went right to the twin sais and pulled them from a statue of Anubis. Charles looked at her skeptical of her choice of weapons.
"There's no other guns in here, none that would work anyway. I'm working with what I got." Marion shrugged as she held the weapons ready.
"Right." Charles said as he grabbed a sword from a nearby display case and tucked it in his belt. "Use the bullets sparingly and then good old fashioned swordplay."
Charles led the way with her following close behind him. The museum was silent, which was odd since there was supposed to be a group of people examining the remnants of the tomb there that night.
"I hate to say this but I think splitting up would better our odds." Charles whispered to Marion.
"That's always the worst idea, but I have to agree with you. This place is massive and we would cover more ground that way." Marion said as Charles stood up to look at her.
"Don't do anything that will get you caught. Please, meet back here in an hour and if I'm not here, call our families, they can help somewhat." Charles told Marion as he was about to take off.
"Same goes for you,I mean it Charles, don't be a hero. I'd rather you be alive than a hero." she replied in all seriousness.
Charles couldn't help but smirk as he grabbed her and held her close. He knew she didn't want him to get hurt. However if he could prevent her from getting hurt then he would do it without question.
"Yes, I understand." she replied as she looked up into his gaze.
With that he leaned in and kissed her. Tangling his fingers in her hair to pull her head closer to his as he kissed her deeply. Completely catching her off guard and then quickly pulling away and walking off behind her.
Marion took off in the forward direction and began to look through the mummy section. She cautiously walked trying to hear any noise that could possibly give her a clue to where Derrick or the curator might be. Coming to the end of the hall she could hear muffled yelling. Following down the hall she came to the edge of the wall and looked over to see Derrick was tied to a chair with a scarf stuffed in his mouth.
