Chapter 5
Back at the small apartment, Charles had received word on who had bought the pendant. Opening the letter, everyone was anxious as he pulled out the paper and read it aloud.
"Sultan Heshmal. He bought it as a gift to his 15th bride." Charles sighed, they only brought the pendant because it was beautiful jewelry more than likely.
"Very powerful gift." Marion sighed as she paced.
"That's the thing, they may not even have bought it for the power, sultan bought that for his bride probably just because it was pretty." Derrick spoke up saying what Charles was thinking.
"Mr. Derrick, forgive the intrusion but your father is on the phone." the curator said with a lazy yawn.
Derrick followed the curator out of the room, to take the call in the curator's office. Charles undid his tie and tossed it aside. Marion was in front of her makeshift vanity brushing her hair out and she caught Charles' reflection in the mirror. He had already taken off his suit coat, and tie and was working on the buttons of his shirt. Needless to say all those feelings she was pushing away, were now resurfacing. Taking off his shirt and tossing it to the side, Charles went to unbuckle his belt when he then saw Marion watching from the mirror.
"See something you like, Marion?" he called out to her, clearly catching her in the act.
Marion looked down with a fierce blush on her face, just her luck to be caught. She could hear Charles walking up behind her and gently moving her hair from the left side of her neck to the right side. He bent down and began to whisper into her ear.
"How long can you deny it Marion? Just from that gaze you had on me, that tells me everything. You are fighting your wants and needs. Who knows what'll happen now that the pendant is out in the open, are you willing to wait and see if there can ever be a time we're together again?" he asked in a light hushed whisper.
Feeling the heat of his breath on her neck gave her goosebumps. He was right on one hand, if the pendant was used for bad purposes who knows what would happen to the world. Turning to face him, she looked up at him through hooded eyes.
"Just say the word and you and I can be together in that bed within a matter of seconds." he said as he gently caressed her face.
"Is that all you want from me?" she asked, completely taking him off guard. "Just sex?"
"I-uh-well I mean to say..." he stuttered in reply.
"Then the answer is no. We're going to regret it one day. Yes I want that same connection we had in bed but I want it to translate to other aspects as well. Maybe I just thought about only our physical pleasure and not what it would cause in the long run. Feelings are there and maybe you don't have them but-" she started as Charles grabbed her head and kissed her deeply, passionately.
Marion was surprised, she thought he would get angry and walk away. Now he was kissing her with a lot more passion that he used to have.
"Don't you dare to believe I have no feelings for you, I've liked you since high school, loved you since college and I don't know what more I can do besides tell you that." Charles told her as he pulled away and looked deep into her eyes.
"You love me?" she asked with tears in her eyes.
"Of course I do, why else do you think I follow you all over the globe?" Charles said as he wiped the tear from her eyes.
"I don't know, I just, I thought you did but I wasn't sure and then Derrick, oh god Charles don't hate me for having feelings for him too." Marion mini panicked.
"I'm not upset, if I hadn't been so stubborn and was just honest with you then it might not have happened. I know you need time but we've got a long road ahead of us, I just want you to know I will always be there for you and love you." he said as he grabbed her and kissed her again.
The next day they had followed rumors that Charles had received about the sultan's daughter wanting to go to the dig and use the pendant. All of them were in shock as they quickly boarded a plane to try and get back to the dig site as fast as possible.
It was hot as Marion, Charles and Derrick rode their camels back into the desert in hopes of beating the new owner of the pendant there. That woman had no idea what she was doing and more than likely she was being led there under the influence of another. Charles led the way with Marion in the middle and Derrick covering the back.
"What are the odds of us beating them there?" Derrick yelled out to his friends.
"Higher than you think, the pendant still had to travel to the new owner and then back to here. We should make it there to stop them." Marion replied, learning that information from Charles.
Coming upon the dig site, it wasn't surprising to see the sand already attempting to cover it up and return it to history. Charles jumped down and took out his gun just in case. Marion jumped down too and Derrick came over as they followed close behind Charles.
Using the same ladder as before, they climbed down into the tomb. Most of the broken pots were still there. As well as the tons of rubble no thanks to Gerald. Charles kicked a few stones forward and they all watched as they disappeared over the ledge.
"I didn't even hear it hit the ground." Derrick says.
"There might not be one." Charles said as he and Marion looked at Derrick.
Suddenly loud whirring noise came from above the topless tomb. It was a helicopter. Charles readied his gun as did Derrick while Marion searched the tomb around them.
"What is she doing?" Derrick asked.
"Looking for a secret passage, maybe even a trap because it sounds like there is more than one helicopter up there. Get ready if they want to fight." Charles wanted Derrick.
Marion was reading along a wall when she saw a lever. She could hear people on their way down. Knowing this wasn't the best idea, she looked to her friends who were readying themselves, she did something she knew might not end well. She pushed on the lever. Everyone could suddenly hear things in motion beneath their feet. Marion rushed forward and held onto each of their hands.
The floor then fell beneath their feet.
"WHAT THE HELL?!" Derrick screamed.
With a large plop at the bottom, each of them fell into the sand below them that seemed to cushion their fall. Marion slowly lifted her head up and looked around, they had landed in the burial chamber.
"Ow...what's so hard?" Derrick asked as he sat up. "I landed on the dead guy's coffin didn't I?"
Charles stood up and dusted himself off before going to Marion and helping her up as well. She looked around the fully painted and very detailed room in shock. This was the tomb of Anek, the one who was set to destroy the pendant the first time.
"Dead woman's actually, I think this is the tomb of Anek, the one who tried to hide the pendant. He said she intrusted it to the dead though, so it would be down here...not up there." Marion said as he looked around.
"Clever girl." a tanned skinned woman came forward and with a dagger in her hand, she stabbed Marion right in the stomach. "Too bad you weren't smart enough to stay away. I have looked everywhere for this pendant, I won't let some foolish American girl ruin my plans."
With that she pulled the dagger out and Marion fell to her knees clutching her stomach.
"MARION!" Charles yelled at the top of his lungs as he rushed to her and held her in his arms.
"You said she wouldn't get hurt." Derrick said to the woman through gritted teeth.
"I lied." the woman said as she walked up to Derrick and grabbed him by his shirt before kissing him. "You played your part well, but now you too are useless."
Using the same dagger that had stabbed Marion, the woman ran Derrick through his stomach before pulling it out and walking down the only hall in the tomb. She instructed her men to follow her as she turned back to Charles and blew him a kiss.
"Wish them luck in the underworld."
Charles held Marion tight as he looked down at her. Tears fell from both their eyes as he looked down at her wound, his face became paler and the fear was really showing in his eyes.
"Charles...I lied, I do love you. Please, don't let her win. Don't let her use the pendant." Marion begged in a hushed whisper.
"I can't leave you." he said as he brushed her hair away from his face.
"You never will, I know about the thing you keep hidden on your wrist, it's for me. Please, you have to stop her." Marion said as she pulled his head down to her. "My last kiss is yours."
Charles kissed Marion until her body went limp in his arms. Pulling away and resting his forehead on chest he held her close as he sobbed. He kept thinking of all the things he missed with her because he was too scared to tell her the truth. Sitting up, he lowered her body to the ground.
