Chapter 2
Charles came up behind Marion and gently touched her neck.
"Are you doing ok? I know with Gerald here that causes a lot of stress but we can find a way to help you out like we did before." Charles whispered in her ear.
She knew what he was talking about, 4 months ago when their friendship went to friends with benefits. Only when they were both single, truly in need of the physical aspect of a relationship, and they swore it wouldn't affect their friendship or work.
"You think that is a good idea?" Marion whispered back, not even looking his way.
"It's a great stress reliever, but as we said before, both of us have to agree on it." Charles said as he walked back to his seat and picked up his pack.
Marion was tempted and very frustrated. She wasn't sure if she was even willing not to take Charles up on his offer. Derrick walked back in and looked at the two of them confused, as if he had missed a conversation.
"Everything ok?" he asked his two friends.
"Yes, come on, let's take everything up so it's ready to go." Marion said as she led the way.
Marion was in her tent, trying her best to occupy her mind with the data before her. The part that was already translated, that is, but she could feel that it wasn't just the heat of the dessert that was bothering her. It was already dark out when she shut the computer and extinguished her light. Yet she still paced around her tent, she wondered if Charles was occupying a woman at that time when the front of her tent flap opened and she thrust herself against the man assuming it was Charles.
The next morning, the sun was bright and she was hotter than normal. Laying her head on something that was warm and hard was not the best position to sleep in. Her eyes slowly opened to her tent when she looked up fully expecting to see Charles but was very surprised she was now in the arms of Derrick. That meant that last night...she was with Derrick and he was definitely not drunk, she would have been able to have tasted it when they kissed.
Pulling the sheet to her so she could grab her clothes, it was then pulled back and she was back in Derrick's arms and he was looking down right into her eyes.
"Good morning beautiful, ready to see if Gerald made good on his threat?" Derrick smiled as he kissed her cheek and then got out of bed and began to dress.
"You don't think he did, do you?" she wondered.
"We would have heard it, plus he always pulls stupid threats like that, none of them ever come to pass." Derrick reassured her.
She had a feeling he was right, yet she laid there in bed and watched Derrick dress before her eyes. It was so dark last night that she thought he was Charles! How could she have been so foolish? Derrick finished redressing and turned around to see Marion had finished as well and was putting her hair up.
"I'll let the team know we will be ready for drop off in ten mins." he told her and then left her tent.
He didn't mention a word about last night. She knew he remembered it, that big grin on his face this morning told her everything. Now she just tried to keep her sanity. Hearing a notification on her laptop, she went over and quickly opened it. She saw the camera footage and there was Gerald setting off explosives in the dig site.
"No no no no no!" she yelled as she rushed out of her tent and right into Charles.
"What's going on?" he asked her, shocked and confused.
"He's planting bombs to set off in the tomb, that dumbass will destory everything!" she yelled with passion in reply.
Derrick ran to the truck that Charles and Marion had jumped into. Charles took off driving to the dig site and once they entered the dig territory a large land mine went off flipping the truck over. All three of them yelled as the truck rolled out of their control.
By the time the truck had stopped, Derrick opened his eyes and looked around. Marion was passed out in the passenger's seat while Charles was knocked out in the driver's seat. Maneuvering himself so he could get out, he dropped to the roof and took out his knife. He first went to Marion and gently caressed her cheek.
"Marion? Hey! Can you hear me?" he whispered to her, unsure whether others were around or not.
Marion jumped and looked around shocked. She then remembered the land mine and accident. She looked at Derrick and he could see the panic in her eyes. He carefully cut her out of the seatbelt and she joined him on the ceiling of the truck. Derrick paused, he could hear someone circling the truck. He gave his knife to Marion who wasn't sure what he was doing.
"Someone is circling the truck, cut Charles out and run." he told her as he took out his gun.
"What about you? I can't just leave you here. I can't leave you Derrick." Marion shook her head as she grabbed Derrick's head and forced him to look at her. "Don't you dare tell me to leave you to die."
"Marion I'm not going to die, there is one of him and one of me. Pretty even odds wouldn't you think?" Derrick tried to reassure her with a smile.
"He's on my side now." Charles whispered, surprising both of them since they didn't know he was awake or ok.
"She's gonna cut you down and then you two make a run for it." Derrick said, pushing the knife into Marion's hand. "I'll be right behind you."
Marion didn' believe him for a moment, but she took the knife and moved enough to release Charles and he climbed down to the ceiling of the truck. Derrick shoved them out the side the man wasn't on as he shot the man in the foot. Charles stood up and grabbed her hand and took off running to the dig site. Charles had gone inside when Marion turned around and saw a rifle right by the entrance. Taking the rifle in hand, she sat on her knees and took aim at the man that now had Derrick holding his hands up in surrender.
"You best pray to the gods, for I will be the last you see." The man spoke in broken english.
"I'm fine to die, I gave myself to someone I love more than anything in this world and nothing can take that from me, not even death." Derrick smiled as he saw the man pull back on the trigger.
He closed his eyes and all the memories of the night before went through his mind. He heard the gunshot but it sounded farther away than he thought it should be. He also didn't feel any pain. Checking himself with only his hands he felt not blood as well. Opening his eyes he was shocked to see the man who was going to shoot him on the ground with a shot between his eyes. Looking behind him, he saw Marion as she dropped a rifle down beside her. She had saved him.
"Thank you god." he said with a grateful sigh of relief.
Derrick stood up and ran to the dig site just as Charles was rushing back up.
"Run! Just fucking run!" Charles said, grabbing Marion's hand, as she grabbed Derrick's and they began to rush away from the dig site.
"What's going on?" Marion asked.
Right after she said that, a loud explosion went off behind them causing them all to be shoved forwards into the sand. Marion barely had any time to collect herself when she sat up and turned to see a giant crater where the dig site had been.
"Oh, what have they done?" Marion said in complete shock.
Charles sat up, spitting the sand from his mouth. Derrick did the same as they both rushed to Marion. Then, standing out of the sand was Gerald and he held up a chest, one made of pure gold and the very one rumored to have the pendant.
"Son of a bitch found it." Derrick groaned, pissed he didn't take Gerald's threat seriously.
"This is the end of the world as we know it. He'll sell it to some power hungry asshole and he will do only god knows what with its power." Charles was now worried for the world more than himself and his friends. "We are truly doomed."
"We have to wait, find out who buys it and steal it back." Marion said as both men looked at her, shocked by her statement. "When they leave, we need to see what artifacts can be salvaged."
It was hours and yet no one came to make sure they were dead, though they hated playing dead in the hot sand, they knew it would be worth it in the long run. When everyone had finally left, Marion sat up and made her way to the dig site with her two best friends beside her. Using the ladder left behind, she climbed down to see so many scenes of the room now completely destroyed.
"Barbarians!" Marion looked at the state of the tomb.
"That's nicer than the word I was thinking." Charles said as he took a few fragments of the wall from the floor and tried to translate them.
"Bunch of assholes if you ask me." Derrick agreed with them as they began to gather anything they could salvage and take back to the museum.
