Mirrors
Soulmate au where if you and your soulmate look in a mirror at the same time, you can see and hear each other. However, if one person isn't looking in the mirror, you can't see your soulmate. As a result, mirror curtains are available to avoid embarrassing moments of catching each other in embarrassing situations.
For this oneshot, one half of the soulmate pairing has been kept away from mirrors his entire life. He can't even drive a car because of the mirrors.
For the other half, he's grown up believing that his soulmate is dead. No matter when or how he looks in the mirror, he's never seen anything but his own reflection. He believes that his soulmate is dead.

Aren't you something to admire?
It was around 2:00 in the morning, and after a certain lucky student woke up, he gazed at the mirror that hung on his closet door.
As usual, his reflection was all he could see.
Cause you're shining something like a mirror
"It's just my luck," he chuckled softly. "My soulmate is either dead or doesn't exist."
It was then that the darkness surrounding him made him think of the loneliness he would have to endure if that was the case. A bit gloomier now, Makoto wrapped the blanket around himself and tried not to look at the mirror.
And I can't help but notice
"Is...is anyone there?"
Makoto shot straight up. He'd only looked at the mirror out of the corner of his eye but...someone had seen him.
"Yeah, I'm here," he said, barely containing his excitement.
Because of how dark his room was, Makoto could barely make out the silhouette of the boy on the other side.
You reflect in this heart of mine
That first encounter only lasted for a couple of minutes as both Makoto and whoever appeared in his mirror were exhausted. But they promised to see each other the next night, so for the first time in a long time, Makoto's heart overflowed with hope for himself.
At school the next day, Makoto was more awake and upbeat than ever. While the silhouette had been careful not to say anything that could reveal his identity, Makoto thought his voice sounded familiar.
Almost like it was one of his classmates....
If you ever feel alone and the glare makes me hard to find
Every night, just a couple hours before midnight, Makoto and his soulmate would meet under the cover of darkness.
At first his soulmate was stiff, cold even. But as the nights wore on, Makoto found him becoming more and more friendly.
Just know that I'm always parallel on the other side
"Hey, are you alright?"
Immediately Makoto's soulmate stiffened and turned away.
"I'm fine. It's nothing that concerns you."
"As your soulmate, I think it does," Makoto retorted. "I don't...no, I can't know what's wrong unless you tell me. I want to help you, in any way I can."
His soulmate sighed and began to talk about what was troubling him, and they didn't fall asleep until the first tendrils of light crept over the horizon.
Cause with your hand in my hand and a pocket full of soul
"Morning Byakuya!" Makoto greeted. Despite only getting an hour of sleep, he still had to get to his classes. Thus, his hair was more unruly than usual and he couldn't stop from yawning every couple minutes. Nonetheless he really didn't feel like getting lectured by both Kiyotaka and the teacher so...here he was.
"Naegi, surely a plebian like you can afford some time into making themselves look presentable," the ultimate heir responded. "What could have possibly been more important to you than that?"
"My soulmate had a rough day yesterday," Makoto replied, stifling a yawn. "And I didn't want to fall asleep until I was sure that they were okay."
I could tell you there's no place we couldn't go
"Do you know who your soulmate is?"
"Huh?" Makoto replied, groggily lifting his head up, his face flushed from embarrassment. "Sorry I might have dozed off."
"You won't be able to help your soulmate if you're falling behind in class, Naegi. You need to get rest."
"Are you concerned for me?" Makoto asked, getting up to go to the cafeteria.
"Don't flatter yourself," Byakuya said, turning on his heel and walking outside.
Just put your hand in the glass; I'll be there to pull you through
"Byakuya!"
With Makoto's luck, the day that Byakuya took a walk outside was the one day that the earth decided to send down the worst blizzard of the year.
Sure it wasn't like he was any smarter, going out into the bitter cold trying to find Byakuya. A rope was tied around his wrist so that Kyoko and Aoi could find him if they had to go out-it was almost like he was in a labyrinth.
You just gotta be strong
Makoto was about to drop to his knees in exhaustion, but that's when he found the collapsed form of Byakuya Togami. He was partially buried by the snow, but thankfully, he was still alive.
"What made you think it was a good idea to take a nap in this weather?" Makoto huffed, shaking him.
When he got no response, Makoto wrapped one arm around Byakuya's waist and felt for the rope trail with the other. Then he began to make the slow and tedious journey back to the warmth of the dorms.
Cause I don't wanna lose you now
'I have to make it,' Makoto thought, pushing through the growing weariness that was weighing him down. He struggled to carry the heir but he wouldn't, no he couldn't abandon Byakuya now.
'But I'm so tired...maybe it wouldn't hurt to rest a little bit.'
His mind's protests were for naught as Makoto's legs collapsed and he couldn't keep his eyes open for even a second, and so he fell asleep.
If Aoi and Kyoko hadn't alerted Sakura, it may have been hours before they were found.
I'm looking right at the other half of me
"Naegi, that was a very risky thing you did," Kyoko said. "You're lucky we were able to get to you in time."
Naegi groaned as he sat up, finding that he was back in his dorm. "How's Byakuya doing?"
"It figures," Kyoko chuckled. "The first thing you want to know is how Byakuya's doing. Well he's doing alright. He's awake now, if you're curious."
"Can I see him?"
"I wouldn't recommend it, you just woke up."
The vacancy that sat in my heart is now a space that you hold
Because Makoto wouldn't stop asking to check on Byakuya, Kyoko finally shoved a handheld mirror into his hands.
"If you are soulmates like I believe, you'll be able to see each other in a moment. I'll be right outside if you need me."
Makoto nodded and waved goodbye before turning the mirror. There certainly wasn't anything remarkable about it, it looked like your run of the mill mirror with a tacky pink frame. But the face that greeted him was not his own.
Show me how to fight for now and I'll tell you baby, it was easy
"You're awake!" Makoto exclaimed. "How are you feeling?"
Byakuya sighed and adjusted his glasses. "Yes, thanks to your recklessness."
"Well, I couldn't just leave you out there," Makoto shrugged. "It seemed like the most logical solution at the time."
"And now we're both bedridden because you couldn't wait for a proper rescue team to find me," Byakuya chuckled. "Still, I'm grateful. That would have been embarrassing."
"For someone of your standing? Probably. The headlines would probably say things like 'Togami heir takes nap in blizzard of the century!' And you'd spend half your career living that down."
Comin' back here to you once I figured it out
It became a daily routine for the two boys from that point on. Each day as they recovered (for each had gotten a nasty cold), they'd talk to each other about whatever came to mind.
It was infinitely better than talking at 3 in the morning.
You were right here all along
"Hey, do you think we could see each other soon?" Makoto asked one day.
"What do you mean, Makoto? I can see you fine right now."
"I know but...in person! I wanna be able to hug you and uh...cuddle you...and I can't do that when you're a reflection in a mirror."
It's like you're my mirror (oh)
Finally, after an endless couple of weeks, Makoto's wish was granted.
He had recovered enough to be able to catch up on past homework assignments and was busy working on one for math when his attention was called with a simple knock on his door.
My mirror staring back at me (oh)
"Byakuya!" Makoto exclaimed, once he opened the door. "What are you doing here?"
"Hm, let me think," Byakuya smirked. "You did say you wanted to hug and what was it...oh right. Cuddle me."
Makoto let out some sort of strangled shriek as his face flushed with embarrassment.
"But if you don't want to see me, I guess I'll go see what Toko's doing," Byakuya said, turning to leave.
Like he had expected, his plan worked perfectly.
Makoto had latched onto him, preventing him from taking just one more step.
"Please don't go," he said.
I couldn't get any bigger (oh)
So Makoto and Byakuya curled into each other's side, wrapped up in Makoto's many blankets. At one point it looked like Byakuya had drifted off to sleep, and Makoto smiled softly at it before kissing his cheek.
"Just on the cheek? You wound me," Byakuya whispered. Makoto's face, yet again, turned scarlet.
"I thought you were asleep!" He whispered back.
"I was and then you woke me up."
With anyone else beside me (oh)
"I'm sorry for waking you up, you just looked so peaceful and I-"
Makoto was cut off as Byakuya, who probably wanted some peace and quiet, kissed him.
"Makoto," he said when they pulled away. "You have a tendency to ramble."
Makoto replied with a kiss of his own.
