3-Graveyard Visits

Josh visited his grandfather's grave monthly. They were close while he was still alive, but he unfortunately had died of a heart attack 6 months ago. Every month Josh visited, there was a boy sitting at the grave beside Josh's grandfather's. The name on the headstone read "Brendon Urie." Josh wasn't sure who that was, because the boy never told him.

The first time they met, neither said a word to each other. Their encounter was short, and Josh left after 10 minutes of awkard silence.

The second time they met, Josh decided to introduce himself.

"Hi. I'm Josh."

"I'm Tyler."

He had a beautiful voice.

"This is my grandpa's grave."

"This is Brendon's."

Josh felt weird, like he was butting in on something that wasn't any of his business.

"Oh. Do you come every month?"

"Yeah."

"Oh."

"Yeah."

Josh left.

The third time they met, Josh had brought two bouquets with him. He smiled at Tyler, who looked like he was still holding up okay.

"One for my grandpa, and one for Brendon."

Josh set the flowers down in front of the headstones. He saw Tyler smile for the first time. He felt like he was going to pass out. Tyler had the kind of smile you couldn't get used to, because it would never stop being beautiful. Josh wished he could see him smile more often.

"Thanks, Josh."

"No biggie."

Tyler stopped talking so Josh went home.

The fourth time, Josh brought earbuds with him. He sat with Tyler at Brandon's grave while the two of them listened to music. They didn't speak much, just listened. Josh wished Tyler talked more, but it was alright. He still enjoyed his company.

They listened to five songs before Josh paused the music.

"Tell me what's on your mind."

"You."

"Me?"

"You," Tyler repeated.

"What about me?"

"You're a kind boy, to sit with a stranger who doesn't even hold a conversation with you."

"That's why I brought music."

"I like music."

"Me too," Josh agreed.

They listened to music until it started getting dark. Tyler said he had to be home. He let Josh take him. Josh left the music off as he drove Tyler home.

"Are you holding up alright?" Josh couldn't help but ask.

"Yeah, I'm alright."

"Good."

"You make it better."

"I do?"

"Yeah. This one's mine."

Josh pulled into the driveway, realizing Tyler only lived about 15 minutes away from his own house. He wanted to ask what he makes better, but Tyler left before he had the chance to.

The fifth time they met, Josh was determined to talk to Tyler more. He sat right next to the boy, their knees touching.

"I want to know more about you."

"I'm Tyler. I'm 16. I like music. My favorite color is pink."

"Is that all?"

"All that matters."

"Everything about you matters."

"Thanks."

Josh didn't know why, but he really wanted to kiss Tyler. So he did, and Tyler hesitantly kissed back. It only lasted for a few seconds before Josh pulled away.

"I'm sorry. I should've asked."

"No," Tyler smiled. "I liked it."

"Really? Me too. I like you Tyler."

"I like you too."

"How do you feel?"

"I feel alright."

"Good."

They made small talk for the next hour or so until it started getting dark again. Josh drove Tyler home again, this time kissing him before he got out.

"I'll see you next month, then."

"See ya."

Tyler did not seem like he was feeling alright the next time Josh saw him. He was hunched over Brendon's gravestone, his sobbing echoing throughout the entire graveyard. Josh immediately fell to his knees beside the boy, pulling him in for a hug.

He let Tyler drench his shirt in tears. He rubbed his back, hoping it would somehow make him feel better.

"Talk to me," Josh spoke gently.

"I-I miss him," Tyler whispered through sniffling sounds.

"Want to talk about it?"

"He was my best friend... He stayed home from school one day a-and I went over to visit him, and... A-And I found him with a hole in his h-head."

Tyler couldn't go on any longer, he broke down again and started crying even harder than he had before.

"Shit, Tyler. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"I-I thought it w-would get e-easier but the longer he's g-gone the more it h-hurts..." Tyler hiccuped in between words, he was crying so hard he could barely breathe.

"I know, I know. Just breathe. I'm here. Just breathe."

Tyler couldn't just breathe. He cried for a solid twenty minutes straight before he finally calmed down. He was sat on Josh's lap, his head resting against the boy's chest. Josh was holding him close, his heart aching.

"You'll get through this, Tyler. I promise. You won't hurt forever."

"Yes I will."

"No you won't. I'll be here to help you through it."

"What if it's too late?"

"What?"

Tyler kissed Josh instead of answering him. And Josh realized Tyler was trying to change the conversation, but the plump lips on his own felt too good for him to try and push Tyler away.

They kissed slowly and carefully. Tyler's lips were still wet and salty from his tears, but Josh wasn't complaining. Tyler pulled away first.

"Thank you, Josh. For being here with me."

"Of course, Tyler. I'd honestly do anything for you."

"You're such a nice boy. I'm glad I met you."

"I'm glad I met you, too."

Josh drove Tyler home again. Tyler kept talking about how thankful he was for Josh. He kissed Josh when they got to his house.

"Again, thank you."

Josh saw Tyler for the last time that night.

He wasn't at the graveyard next month. Instead, there was a piece of paper taped to Josh's grandpa's headstone.

"Dearest Josh,
I'm sorry. I meant all the things I said. Things just got so bad. I'll miss you. Look for me in the sky.
Love always,
Tyler Joseph"

Josh's hands were trembling as he lowered the note. His eyes were full of tears. He was mad. He wanted to rip the note to pieces, but he also knew it was the last piece of Tyler he'd ever get. He folded the note and put it in his pocket, and that was when he realized.

There was a new stone beside Brendon's. The grass in front of it was just barely growing, as if it had recently been dug up. Josh felt like he got punched in the stomach. He fell to his knees and vomited. He wrenched until there was nothing left in his stomach, and he cried until there was no more tears left to fall.

Why wasn't he enough to save Tyler? He thought he was doing good. He thought Tyler would be okay, that they'd be okay together.

Josh laid over the patch of dirt, his wet eyes continuously reading the words "Tyler Joseph" engraved into a stone. It didn't seem real. It felt like he was in a nightmare. He wanted to do more with Tyler. He wanted to love Tyler. He wanted to see Tyler again. If he could just see him one more time, maybe he would say the right thing and Tyler would still be there.

There was a pink sunset that night. Josh cried a lot. Pink was Tyler's favorite color, Josh remembered. Josh would never get to see Tyler in person again, only in pink skies.

Josh used to visit the graveyard monthly. Now, he started visiting weekly.
