The Reunion
Okay so our English teacher told us to write a story that ended with- 'and from that moment onwards, I avoided him.' andddd my fanfic crazed brain came up with this lmaoo, Hope you like it!!!
"You knew the game and played, it kills to know that you have been defeated." I looked up to meet the eyes of the man who had requested an appointment with me at this sketchy location.
We were at a table hidden behind one of the walls, surrounded by the dancing bodies of drunkards who visited this sorry excuse of a bar for their Friday dose of night-life. Dim golden lights faintly lit up the flirty barman behind the counters, serving his fifth Martini in the time since I had arrived.
The rest of the room was darkened, and for good measure, the wobbling silhouettes of the intoxicated moving on the floor as they engaged in their high-spirited shenanigans was more than enough to understand what was going on. I half-wished I could join them, but work wouldn't let me and so I contented myself with staring jealously at those foolish smiling faces which never had to worry about the next raids.
My visitor seemed adamant on disrupting those rare moments of peace, when I didn't have to let loose those monsters that resided within me, most of them created by the same profession we both indulged in. Looking back, I was only ever in it for the money, just blindly tempted by my avaricious desires without ever stopping to consider the consequences.
He sunk into the chair beside mine without invitation, though when had he ever bothered to care for someone's consent. Mouth opening and shutting quickly, he seemed to be debating whether or not to speak before finally seeming to realise that he didn't come here to have a drink with me.
"Loss is tough, and definitely painful but it's how we handle the grief that shapes us. You didn't intend for it all to go downhill and quite frankly, neither did I although I do agree my behaviour might have..." his voice trailed off as my piqued self intervened.
"Cut the crap, we both know why you're here. Those dramatic soliloquies don't change a thing between us. A deal's a deal and unlike you, I actually stick to my word."
"Still feisty, I see." A quick glare from me shut him up before I continued.
"I've got what you asked for and if you still have all of yours then we simply have to do is exchange them and none'll be the wiser."
Our companions didn't seem to realise what an important deal was being struck at the moment, one that'd have the power to define their fate but they continued grinding their hips against each other on the raised stage in hopes of something better later.
He bowed his head down as he seemed to ponder over my proposal. He didn't look up for long and when he did, we both knew that that was just a ploy to buy time.
A distinct gunshot interrupted his apparent stream of consciousness and his body jumped into action, pulling me to the ground before I could even comprehend the direction from where the sound came.
I removed his arm from around me and raised my neck curiously to try and spot our pursuers but they were well-trained, and didn't reveal themselves either.
He pulled me back down, tightening his hold around my waist before murmuring. "Idiot. You know you'll only get hurt or worse, caught."
"Remove your hand from around me before I break your bones." I chose to ignore his warning and continued to look around, anxious for any escape route.
He pulled me back down again, this time harder and hissed angrily into my ears, "I don't care if you still hate me, but I've already apologized and I do care about you so try not to get yourself killed. Especially by making yourself a target in the midst of a shooting."
"You lost that privilege a long time ago. To care about me. But that's just it, you don't, do you? You don't care." I turned away before he could notice the familiar wetness pooling in my eyes, aching to be released. But I can't lose control. Not here and definitely not in front of him.
Searching for an exit to distract my racing thoughts, I hastily shoved him off me and crawled nearer the opposite side of the table from where I could make out the open fire escape, with the previously dancing people rushing to get out.
"What the heck do you think you're-"
Lifting a finger to his mouth, I cut him off, "We're gonna run out from there, alright? Act drunk enough and just hope they mistake us for another stoned couple trying to run away."
Noticing his eyes darting from corner to corner as he considered my feeble attempts at an 'escape', I spoke again. "You didn't bring any bags, did you?"
This time, he looked back to where I was scrunched over. "Not here, they're all still in the car. Too risky getting it out."
"Good." I rose to my feet, legs rickety from sitting too long and took a discrete look around, to not give away my identity to anyone who might be behind the wall before pulling Jungkook up. His hand returned around my waist as he steadied himself before pulling us to the exit.
"It's just one shot, now go." We scurried towards the exits, as fast as we could, trying not to give away the professionalism in our mannerisms, a result of constant and exhausting yet vital training. Dashing away like our lives depended on it because it did.
We almost sprinted out of the doors, pushing away the others and he finally removed his arm from around me. Gasping in the fresh air I had been deprived of inside that place brimming with the suffocating stench of alcohol and sweat, I jogged away from the line of the sight of the incoming police who seemed to have been alerted about the shooting and behind a huge tree on the other side of the building.
The persistent idiot followed me till I finally decided to end it, for once and for all.
"Pleasure not doing business with you." I walked away, leaving him to gape, mouth open with jaw nearly touching the floor as the shock settled in. Thankfully, he didn't follow me this time.
And I was free. Well, as free as I can be in this life. Luckily for me, he didn't see me driving off in our old Mustang, and from that moment onwards, I did my best to avoid him. Not a great idea to run into your ex-mission partner whom you had—and still have—feelings for when three different mafias are determined on catching hold of you.
