Deception & Betrayal - CG Short Story

A/N will be at the bottom this time :)

Vesper POV

Vesper walked slowly along the wall, one hand on the smooth stone. Being partially blind wasn't helping the fact that she was being tracked by a cult. A cult who used to be my friends, she thought, tears welling in her remaining eye. If it weren't for them, I would still be able to see out of my left eye. Her eyes narrowed as she walked along, platform boots making clomping noises along on the asphalt. The pockets in her cargo pants rang with sounds of metal.

Her horns and wings were scratched and dull from days of hiding. Her hoodie and cargo pants were full of rips and tears, but most of her pockets were still usable. The backpack containing her supplies was small, but contained everything she needed to survive. She bared her fangs in annoyance, her forked dragon tongue flickering.

She turned around the corner and emerged into a large field filled with trees. Fruit trees, she realized. Pulling open a medium sized sack that hung around her waist, she walked from tree to tree, gathering fruit and storing it away.

Once she was done, she walked to an opening where there was enough room to spread her wings. She beat them hard and lifted off the ground. She eyed a mountain that looked suitable enough for her to hide for a while and began to fly in that direction.

After 4 hours of flying, she realized that it might take a few days to reach the mountain. Glancing at the sky, she exclaimed, "Sunset already? Must have been later than I thought when I left." Looking down, she spied a small grove of trees that she could hide in for the night.

As she set up camp, she constantly checked her surroundings. Once she was done, she pulled a small square device out of her pocket and pressed the button. An almost clear force field expanded from the little thing. The dragon hybrid strapped it to her wrist and settled down.

She made a small meal from some of the fruit she had gathered and some nuts she pulled off a nearby plant. She also managed to catch a squirrel or two and cooked them on a small burner she had in her backpack.

After cleaning up her area, she settled down to sleep. Peace was hers, but for a short while only. Suddenly, she was jolted awake by a loud blast. Her force field vibrated with the impact of whatever had hit it. Bright lights blared in her vision. "Crap," she muttered, glad that everything was all packed away. Grabbing her stuff, she shoved herself further into the trees and deactivated the force field.

Loud shouts rang through the air. "Find her. I know she's here. She's too predictable." Vesper flinched at the voice. Sharp and cold, it belonged to her ex-girlfriend, Willow. She could see flashes of her here and there. Tall, semi-dark skinned, and reeking of vengeance, she was here.

"Willow, why do you insist on following her," another familiar voice rang out. The hybrid winced, pulling her red hoodie tighter around her. That voice belonged to Swift. She and the fluffy blue dragon had been close, but when Vesper had to vanish, she became distant. She didn't write like she had promised.

"She stole the Chaos Beings scythe, and now they're mad. Is that not a good reason?" Another voice snarled, sounding odd and distorted. That's Death speaking, Vesper realized. Her former friend had an alter who was set on ruling the world, but Swift was the host, therefore having most of the control.

"Silence," Willow ordered, "Spread out and search the area. Her force field is down. She can't have gone far." I haven't gone anywhere, Vesper thought to herself as she began to look for ways out. I could use my magic, she thought, I can make a clone of myself. I haven't done that yet. A wave of wind buffeted her as she shifted positions.

Before she could do anything, someone crashed through the trees. Vesper held her breath and tried to make herself as small as possible. She closed her eyes, waiting for the danger to pass, but she had a feeling that she was being watched. Opening her eyes, she looked up to see Triple poised above her, a deadly sharp knife in one paw, a rope in the other.

"Hello there Vesper," Triple hissed, deftly catching her in the rope, pinning her arms and wings to her sides. "I have some friends who might like to see you." The cat had a sadistic look on her face. The dragon hybrid was dragged back to the clearing and was forced to stand up.

Vesper was surrounded by three people; Swift, Pancake, and Triple. Swift's blue fur was streaked in black paint to make herself look more fierce and was aiming a gun at her head. Pancake, Swift's partner, was covered in the same patterns. Her long brown hair was tied up in a bun, and she was wearing tight fitting combat gear. Triple, now that Vesper could see clearly, wore nothing but a belt which held several knives and even a mini flamethrower.

Willow stepped forward with a satisfied smirk. "So nice to see you again Vesper." "Same to you," Vesper replied evenly. Willow frowned, clearly she had expected Vesper to snap or to try and attack her. Close by, Swift let out a groan. Her eyes were flickering from blue to red and her fur kept shifting colors. The two next to her stepped back, unsure of what was going on.

The blue dragon stepped forwards, her entire body shifting. Her body became twice as big, her fur became solid black scales, and hints of red swirled through them. Occasionally a bit of blue would show, but it was quickly swallowed. Her tail grew two deadly spikes, and new spines ran down her back, each one glistening with poison. Her eyes switched from a gentle blue to an evil red, the pupils becoming slit thin. The new dragon grinned at her, an evil glint in her eye.

Oh crap, Vesper thought, Death is in charge now. She had only seen Death fully once before, when she was trying to take over the world. Now, she worked for the Chaos Being, acting as her overworld eyes and ears.

"We've finally found you," the dragon snarled, pacing around her. "The Chaos Being will be pleased to have you back." Pancake and Triple glanced at each other uneasily. Willow stood stoic where she remained, eyes blank. "I did what was right," Vesper hissed, keeping her eyes on the demon, "The Chaos Being doesn't deserve to rule. I made a mistake when I joined the Chaos Cult. I'm done with you now."

"Oh, no no no, we can't have that now, can we," Death spoke as if she was talking to a toddler. "You made the vow. Breaking it is punishable by... Death." She chuckled at her own pun. "If you didn't have the scythe, you'd be dead already." Vesper glared at her, "You have me at your mercy. Why don't you take it, kill me, and leave?"

"Because the Chaos Being wants to do it themselves," Death answered evenly. As she spoke, a dark cloud began to form behind her. "Would you look at that? Perfect timing!" Death moved back and knelt by the portal. The others reluctantly followed suit. Four more people got out of the truck and knelt where they stood.

Slightly panicking, Vesper began to loosen her restraints as she watched the portal, now a gleaming purple-silver-orange color, begin to swirl. A loud crack, followed by a flash, blinded the hybrid. Hissing, she opened her eyes to find the Chaos Being standing over her.

The Chaos Being was a demon called a Pravum, a species bent on chaos and deception. They all varied in size and color, but this one was different. Instead of having green, blue, red, or white, they had a fluffy purple coat with a white underbelly. Their horns were blue and black striped, and their eyes were a piercing amber-orange. Their sharp teeth were gleaming in a twisted smile. The singular shoulder plate on their left shoulder glimmered black, purple, and gold, rested where it always had.

"Well done Death," the Chaos Being spoke, their voice echoing around the area, cracking the still air like a whip. Death gave a slight nod and joined the other demon. "Now that you're here," they smiled coldly, "You can give me my scythe back." "I'm not giving it to you," Vesper snarled back, "I'm going to hide it so you can never use your full power again. It's not right."

"It's not right," the Pravum mimicked, making their voice high pitched. Pancake laughed and the people by the truck started whispering among themselves. "Like it or not, I was destined to rule," they snorted, "So give me back what is rightfully mine."

"No, Echo, I will not." The Pravum recoiled at the use of their real name. Vesper pulled off her ropes in one fluid motion and pulled two things out of one of her numerous pockets. She held them up in front of her and ignited one of them.

"Soul Fire?" The question came from one of the truck people. They stepped forwards into the light. Churro, Vesper thought sadly, If only I could save you all from Echo. Churro was also a dragon hybrid, much like Vesper, but he had yellow scales and a thick Southern accent.

"Yes Churro, Soul Fire," Vesper snarled, "If I ignite the scythe in its small form using Soul Fire, it will be changed or destroyed. I have a good flame. It will kill the bad." "You wouldn't dare," Echo hissed. "Oh, I would," Vesper roared back. The Chaos Being launched themselves at the hybrid, emitting a loud growl and tackled the dragon.

All of her air suddenly vanished as she hit the ground with a thud. Echo was poised, ready to kill, but the dragon managed to kick her off. I hope that leaves a bruise, Vesper thought, scrambling to her feet. She still had the scythe in its collapsible form, a keychain, so she clipped it to her pants, then launched herself at the Chaos Being.

The two exchanged harsh blows, circling back and forth. When Vesper dealt the Chaos Being a hard slash to the face, Pancake attempted to join the fight. She had tried at least twice, but Death held her back. The second time, Death firmly grabbed Pancake's arm in her claws and held her by her side.

Both of them were bleeding now, Vesper's cut had been reopened and one of her wings was close to tatters. One of her horns had a deep gouge in it, and one of her hoodie sleeves had been ripped off. Echo had a large cut on their snout and chunks of their fur had been ripped away, leaving raw and bloody skin beneath. One of their ears was ripped to shreds and blood was running down their face, matting the fur and making them look disfigured.

The people by the truck had moved forwards to watch the duel. Other than Churro, Vesper saw Wither, Cammie, and Esther, their silhouettes enhanced by the blaring lights. She paused for a second to give them a sad look. Cammie looked away guiltily, but Wither and Esther stared back with a look of defiance, clearly saying, "You brought this upon yourself. We won't be helping you now."

Vesper's eyes dropped and she looked away. As she drew herself up, the Chaos Being took it as their opening to get at her. Vesper was tackled once more, mid-spin, and hit the ground again, this time with one of Echo's paws on her windpipe. Their sharp claws dug into her neck and pinpricks of blood appeared.

"Ah, after a long while," Echo said with a sadistic grin, "My scythe, reunited with me." They unclipped the keychain and held it up. They then beckoned Death forward and took their paw off of the dragon on the ground. "Pick her up," the Chaos Being ordered. Death obliged, picking her up and pinning her arms and wings together in her massive talon.

"At long last," Echo grinned, tossing the keychain up and down, "I will finally have my revenge. I will kill you, and Death will take your soul to the deepest parts of Hell." Vesper shivered. She had heard stories of people who had traveled there and had made it out alive. It was a pure nightmare. She started squirming, and the Pravum let out a chuckle. "You can't get away this time."

"Now, come to me, my pet," Echo said to the key chain, "Return to me so we can dispose of a traitor." They pressed something and the capsule started glowing. As it grew, the Chaos Being shrieked with laughter. "Reunited at last," they cackled.

When the glow faded, it wasn't what they expected. Instead of a gleaming, ornately designed black, purple, and gold scythe, it was a rubber chicken. Echo let out a scream and dropped it, backing away. At the same time, Vesper wriggled free of Death's grip and pulled something out of her pocket.

It worked! I knew I remembered that they were afraid of rubber chickens! She held up the small canister and locked eyes with the terrified demon. "You're too late," she grinned, "I already used the Soul Fire." She pressed a hidden button and the real scythe expanded with a flash of light. Instead of purple, black, and gold, it was now red, black, and silver.

"It answers to me now," Vesper snarled. The demon narrowed their eyes in fury. "No!" Echo howled. Having overcome their fright, they grabbed a random sword from Esther and charged at Vesper. The two fought viciously, metal clashing against metal. Everyone watched retreated to the truck because of how ferociously they were battling. Death was itching to join in, but didn't, for fear of squishing her master.

Eventually, the hybrid had backed the Chaos Being and Death into a corner of particularly dense trees. "There's no way out," Vesper hissed. "Death, let Swift have control and I will spare you from being erased completely." Death snarled, raising her tail and spikes to make her look more intimidating. Vesper held the blade of the scythe against the demon's neck, and Death sighed in defeat. "Until we meet again," she hissed.

The dragon began to shift. Her body shrunk down to usual size, black scales faded to blue fur, and the spikes on her tail and back shrank until they didn't exist. Her eyes returned to her normal blue, and her pupils became normal. She blinked once, twice, then asked, "What in the name of Sam Hill just happened?"

"Go ask Pancake," Vesper replied, giving the dragon a shove. Instead of looking wounded, like she normally did, she walked away with her head hanging. "What to do with you now," Vesper pondered, pacing around the demon. Echo kept their eyes trained on Vesper, teeth bared. "I'll be keeping this," she said, unclipping the shoulder plate. Where the plate had been was a large, ugly scar. The Pravum recoiled, one paw reaching up to cover it.

"I've made my decision," Vesper finally said, after circling the not so chaotic Chaos Being for around five minutes. Echo glared at her. "I'm sending you back to where you belong, the deepest part of Hell." Their eyes widened. "Don't do that, please." "You have no room to talk after what you just tried to do," Vesper shouted.

"Hear me out then!" Echo roared back. "Fine," Vesper shouted, "Tell me your story and I may not send you back!" Echo closed their eyes and sat down. The hybrid sat down across from them, holding the scythe in her lap.

"Demons aren't born, they're created by the four main elements, Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. I was different. When I came to be, I was the wrong color. I wasn't blue like a Water demon, or red like a Fire demon, or any of the other colors. I was purple. The other Pravums shunned me. I had no friends, I wasn't invited on missions, it was like I didn't exist." Echo opened their eyes, which were filled with tears. "Eventually, two other Pravum's approached me, Jinx and Hawk. Both were Water demons, and I was a nobody."

"They told me that they had been watching me for a while, and had come to believe that I wasn't normal." "Well no der, Sherlock," I told them. "Then they told me that because of my coloring, I was a rare form of Pravum, a Shadow demon." Vesper gave the Chaos Being a look, "Shadow demon?" "Shadow, Dark, Death, whatever you want to call it," the Pravum sighed. "Anyways, they gave me some books and they trained me as best as they could."

Black water ran down their face, and Vesper realized that they were crying. "For my first ever mission, we were assigned to kill the President of whatever this country used to be called. We were successful, but in the escape Hawk and Jinx got caught by the officials. They were dragged off and I was forced to go back alone."

"However, in the aftermath, I realized what I had caused. I had caused chaos, and I liked it. I took the name Chaos Being upon myself and started this organization, or cult, as you call it. Here, I've been able to do whatever I want without causing myself guilt for what I did to my only friends."

They looked at Vesper with a look of sad expectancy on their face. "If you choose to send me back, I won't fight." The hybrid stood up. Someone put their hand on Vesper's shoulder and she whirled around. Death was standing there, but she had changed. She no longer had red floating around her body. Insead, her eyes were pure white, other than her pupils, and her scales were pure black.

"Thank you Vesper," Death said, "For once, you have done something to me that helped. I owe you a favor now. Whatever it may be, just ask and I will do it." Vesper glanced down at the other demon, who was wiping away their tears. "I want you to pair up with Echo. I want you to help them find Hawk and Jinx, no matter the cost, and then see the three safely returned to Hell." Death nodded, "I give you my word. I will see it done." She yanked the moping Pravum off of the ground.

Together, they went back to the truck. Death, still holding the former Chaos Being, pulled aside Pancake and Wither to talk to them. Everyone else gathered around Vesper, who was still holding the weapon and the shoulder plate. "We should have known," Churro said softly, "Things would be different now if.. if E-Echo had told us that." He stuttered over the name and Vesper gave him a hug.

"Everything will be ok now. I promise," she said. Pancake and Wither came back over, Pancake looking a little red in the face. "She'll be ok," Wither murmured when Vesper gave him a questioning look. "If Death goes, Swift's conscience goes too." She nodded.

They all turned to look at the two demons. Echo was gripping one of Death's spines as she beat her wings. Poison doesn't affect them, Vesper remembered. With one large flap, Death lifted off and shot away. "Bye guys," Echo's faint shout met their ears. They all let out a quiet giggle.

Willow turned to Vesper. "Vesper, I-I'm really sorry about all this," Willow said, her voice wobbling. The hybrid pulled the tree girl in and gave her a tight squeeze. "Can't. Breathe." Willow choked. Vesper let go and gave her a smile. "I forgive you, you know," she said. They turned to the rest of the group.

"Guys?" Vesper gathered them all into a large group hug. "Yeah Vesper?" Pancake's voice was quiet, a little sad. "Trust me when I say this, but everyone and everything will be ok. I promise you all that."

"We know it will," Cammie smiled. As they all stood there, Vesper knew that she was done being hunted. Turning to the truck, she called, "What are we doing here, standing around? We've got a world to change! We don't have all day!" Everyone chuckled and followed her. They were all at peace.

For now.
