Amortentia
We took a few liberties here, like true love being able to be sisterly, or the exact definition of how Amortentia works. Don't sweat. -L
How they got hold of the potion is a mystery to us all, but they did. Alexander, John, Eliza, and the rest had found Amortentia. What is Amortentia, you ask? The potion smells like your true love's personality. Now you may say, well how is that supposed to work? Well picture this: You love someone, who has a dark and sad personality. Amortentia may smell to you of rain or dark chocolate. To my understanding, at least.
But when everything's said and done, the friends had found Amortentia, and are now wasting no time in trying it out.
"You go first!" Lafayette laughs, pointing at Hercules.
He grins at his boyfriend. "Really, Laf? Scared of what it's going to be?"
Lafayette doesn't answer.
Hercules, sensing the mood suddenly cascading upon the ground, quickly wafts the smell towards him. "Uh... It smells like... Wow... You are a conflicting person, Laf. I'm assuming." He winks at Lafayette, hoping for a laugh.
It doesn't come, so he quickly gets on with the description. "Uh... Gunpowder and... God, what's that other smell? It smells so good, jeez. Gimme a sec. Like... Some kind of scented clay candle like thing..."
Lafayette smiles. "Oh?"
"Yes?" Hercules sheepishly shrugs, unsure of what his answer should be. It didn't sound like either of those scents were very... Good for his boyfriend's mental health.
"I'm supposing from all your hesitance, you've forgotten that Lafayette has twenty or more clay animals hidden under his bed that he sometimes plays with by himself... Oh I did it again, didn't I?" Angelica asks.
Peggy hides a laugh while Eliza nods. "You really need to not."
"Moving on! Laf, your turn." A devilish smirk appears on Hercules' face.
Lafayette somewhat resembles a tomato at the moment. "It smells like... Fire. And. And? Uh... Shampoo. Like, the really nice kind that sometimes Hercules gets and it smells all soft and nice..." He seems to realize what he just implied with the shampoo and buries his face in his hands, groaning.
Herc smiles brightly. "Sounds like I'm your soulmate then, Laf!"
He pulls his hands away and places them promptly on either side of his boyfriend's face, pulling him in for a kiss.
He pulls away for a moment to say, "Never doubted it for a second."
This time, Hercules is the one who's quiet.
"Um... Gag me with a spoon much? My turn!" Peggy brightly announces, ignoring the awkward moment between Lafayette and Hercules to be nice.
Lafayette passes her the potion.
She takes an audible sniff, instantly smiling. "Like... Lemons. And mint! That's a pretty good scent!"
Her eyes flick over to Angelica in a way that could almost be ignored.
"Who do you think it is?" John asks.
Peggy shrugs, though the smile on her face makes it blatantly obvious that she knows who it is. "Okay! The rest of the Schuyler Sisters then!"
Angelica inhales deeply. "Lavender. And... Vanilla. Vanilla bean. Fresh. There's more..." She furrows her brow. "Ice? Cold? I don't know."
"That... Sounds like Eliza..." the littlest Schuyler says at last, forcing a huge grin on her face. "Sounds like you and 'Liza are pretty close then, Ang."
Angelica looks over at Eliza. "Ice?"
Eliza's gaze flicks between the two. "I have literally no idea."
She takes the potion. "Oh. Oh this is... Really... Almost intoxicating..." She breathes in again. "Red wine. Salt. Cherry Lipstick."
Eliza's face slowly gains color. "Ha."
"Wonder who that sounds like," Maria quips.
Eliza flicks her gaze up at Maria through her lashes. "Your turn, Maria."
The girl gracefully takes the potion and gives an elegant sniff. Instantly, she winks at Eliza. "I couldn't describe it better than your sister, Eliza."
Eliza bites her lip. "Ah."
"Ice?" Maria finally says at last. "You aren't really an ice queen, missy. Unless you're hiding a side of you."
Eliza puts her hands up. "You got me. I have secret ice powers."
"Makes so much sense," drawls the red-clad girl, not buying a single word.
Jenna clears her throat. "Get a room. Don't drink it, either."
"Please, Jenna. If anything, I would be having someone else drink it as a trick," Maria scoffs, acting as if that's the most ridiculous thing she has ever heard. Nonetheless, she passes it over to Jenna.
Jenna smells it. "Warm chocolate, a river, and... Lilies."
Aaron fidgets a little uncomfortably before grinning at Jenna. "That sounds pretty nice... May I take a whiff?"
She smiles and nods. Jenna was always a woman of few words. Nobody thinks to remind Jenna of the fact that it doesn't sound like her boyfriend at all.
"Metallic," Aaron instantly says. "And... A poppy flower."
Jenna smiles. "I don't know that it sounds like any one person, Aaron."
"Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't..." He winks at her.
Alex lets out a huge groan. "Come on! This is literally true love! Form a freaking opinion!"
"Thanks for your support," Aaron replies dryly.
John takes the bottle from Aaron and hands it to Alexander. The Caribbean boy practically bounces out of his seat while he sniffs it energetically. "Oh! Like sugar! But also kinda like... Um... Give me a second. It smells disturbingly like an apple, which goes horribly with sugar, but hey, no judgment here. And that smell you pick up from a good bar, like alcohol mixed in with an oomph you never figured out!"
John blinks at Alexander. "Um...? You're in love with a sparkling apple gin?"
"Yep." He contently leans back. "Sounds like you, John. If it takes smelling a potion for us to date, it will have been worth it."
John's face burns. "You don't even like me, calm down."
"The potion disagrees," Alex singsongs before passing the potion to John.
John closes his eyes and inhales. "A certain type of lily. A... Stargazer. I didn't even know that was a flower, it just came to me. And... Uh... Let's see... A field after it's rained."
"Apparently, I didn't know it was either," Alex comments idly, wondering what the heck a Stargazer was.
John clears his throat. "Well I guess I don't know who that is then."
"I bet it's Alex." Hercules immediately grins at John, who has lit up like a Christmas tree.
John laughs nervously and looks over at Alexander. Alex grins brightly, accepting that without question. John beams and slowly nods in response.
"Jefferson, you wanna..." John trails off, not breaking eye contact.
Thomas rolls his eyes. "Y'all are disgusting." He takes the potion though, sniffing it as quickly as he can.
The scent of an old book sitting on a shelf in the library, morning dew, and wool invades his senses immediately. He grins before realizing who it would be. Glancing over at James, he clears his throat. He's not risking his friendship over a silly crush. "Smells like what Peggy described."
Angelica quirks an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
"Yep," Thomas lies easily, passing the potion over to James. "Your turn, Mads."
James looks up a bit dejectedly after smelling the Amorentia. "It smells like sunflowers, and fresh ink." He looks at his feet.
Thomas instantly copies his action, awkwardly chewing on his lip. Alex raises his eyebrow. "Oh? Really? Sounds like Mads has a giant crush on Jeffy."
"Still not my name," Thomas murmurs.
James shrugs. What else can he do?
Angelica sighs exasperatedly. "You're kidding right? You two are freaking unreal. Thomas, you hate lemons. You told me so yourself."
"People change, darlin'."
"I can practically see you lying through your teeth. And yes, while people change, I know for a fact you did not smell mint and lemons."
"Well, uh..." Thomas desperately searches for words that will work well.
"Yo, just spit it out already!" John cries.
The Southerner rolls his eyes. "Fine, it smelled like a book, and dew, and wool."
"Glad you went into detail." Eliza shoots Thomas a look.
He shrugs. "I'm a simple man."
Alex laughs at that.
"Suppose we won't ever know then. What a shame," Lafayette says sarcastically.
Thomas shrugs. "Yup."
Angelica taps Peggy's shoulder. "Please can I?"
"Sure, whatever," she mumbles.
Angelica clears her throat. "Okay, so don't think we haven't noticed all the glances you've been shooting to James. And the grin that faded before you answered. Yes, it may be a book, dew, and wool, but if that was an answer you were comfortable with, you would have gone into detail. You refuse to answer our questions with more than one word. Need I go further?"
"Aren't you clever, sweetheart?" Thomas' eyes wander over to James nonetheless.
"I pride myself on it. Now 'fess up, kid."
Alex grins. "Well, two parts of every story, eh, James?"
John tugs on Alex's sleeve. "You're distracting us from getting to hear Thomas admit that he likes James. Shh..."
"Eh. They're both pretty awful. And anyway, look at how brightly they're blushing. Worth it," he responds flippantly.
Eliza walks up to Thomas, staring him down.
"Hi, 'Liza."
"Hello Thomas. Please, for the sake of us all..."
"Fine. Smells like James. Happy?" Thomas rolls his eyes, trying to act as casual as he possibly could.
She squeals and hugs him. "There we go!"
James shakily smiles. "O-oh."
"Kiss, kiss, kiss," Hercules starts chanting.
Angelica rolls her eyes, while Eliza and John join in the chanting. John seemingly having 'forgotten' what just happened with himself and Alexander.
Thomas extracts himself from Eliza's hug and walks over to James. "Wanna go back to our dorm? I don't really need these people onlooking."
James turns more red if possible and nods, standing up. "Agreed."
