Onimikeler: Happy Birthday

Onimikeler Oneshot:

Happy Birthday

Characters: Onity, Mike, Tyler,

Plot: Onity went out to find a birthday present for his favorite nerd, but found himself having to make a decision that would change the lives of him and his loved ones forever.

-...-

Onity's eyes scanned up and down the rows of the shelves full of items. He walked down one row, his hands In his jacket pocket. His jacket was a dark purple, the hoodie lined with fur. A gift that he was given by Tyler's sister, Rose, his last birthday. Her understanding of his fashion sense was on point. He did have to make some modifications, though. The jacket was unzipped, and on the small zipper puller thing, he attached a key chain. On the little metal keychain, his favorite angry little alien gem, Peridot.

Onity looked around, in search for something Tyler would like. The guy's birthday was tomorrow, and he wanted to actually get the nerd something with money he had earned himself. He wasn't new to these birthday things anymore, as he'd been outside the mansion for almost two to three years now.  He did not have a job yet, but he would spend some of his free time helping Tyler's mom with moving things around her house, to which she would kindly pay him in return. Onity was also really good at advanced human maths, and when Jeremy found out he was able to hook Onity up with some opportunities with tutoring at the local college. To which, he was paid as well.

Onity already knew that Mike had gotten Tyler some new headphones, as well as some nice cleaning equipment for his guitar. Onity could guess that Rose would be getting Tyler some really cool clothes, like really warm red sweaters or a cool looking jacket. Tyler's friend, Kyle, probably would get some video games, and the kid's mom was unpredictable with her gifts. One year she'd get you something really cool she saw in a magazine add, the next she'd get you a new coffee maker. Question was, what would Onity get him? He'd never gotten the guy anything before.

Onity reached the end of the row of shelves when his phone went off. He pulled the purple case'd iphone from his pocket, a small charm also attached to it. This time, it was a charm he'd drawn and laminated and stuck to a string. It was of his favorite problematic demon triangle, Bill Cipher. The caller ID showed to be Mike Schmidt. Onity answered the call, and placed the phone to his ears.

"Yo!" Onity smiled.

"Hey Onity!" Mike's voice was heard on the other side, no surprise. "Just called to let you know that me and Tyler will be running a little late getting home."

"Oh really?" Onity asked.

"Yeah, his car won't start. When I get off work, I'm going to drive over there to pick him up."

Onity couldn't help but let a little laugh escape. "He has the worst of luck."

Mike found that amusing as well. "It'll make up for whatever good luck comes his way tomorrow."

"Considering nobody's died, I don't think what happens to him tomorrow could live up to everything else." Onity hummed.

"Yeah, but don't jinx it." Mike replied.

"Oh! That reminds me, what should I get the nerd for his birthday?" Onity asked.

"It's kinda late, have you tried making him something?" Mike shrugged. He wasn't good with getting ideas on the spot. "But that's more of a mother son sorta thing. Making something for someone. Or, I guess it really depends."

"I could probably draw something stupid, but I wanna get him something he'll like this time." Onity sighed. "I'm already at the store, looking around."

"Oh, so you're not home?" Mike asked.

"I think I should be back before you guys." Onity continued.

"Ah, okay. Just keep looking around, Tyler's not picky at all. And even if it's just a joke gift, you know he'd still love it." Mike suggested. "To tell the truth, I don't think he even expects to get anything from you. Anything would be a surprise to him."

"Yeah, I thought so." Onity nodded his head.

Suddenly Mike snorted. "You should get him a bunch of underwear and socks."

Onity laughed again. "I'll think about that."

"Okay, we'll, I should go. One more thing though! I don't really feel like making dinner when I get home, i'm sorta tired. I think once I get Tyler, we'll decide on a fast food place and go pick something up. That okay?" Mike asked.

Onity licked his lips. Human fast food was delicious! "Totally!"

"Alright! I'll text you the place once we decide, and you can tell us what you want from there."

"Okiedokie!" Onity smiled.

"I'll see you later!"

"I love you!" Onity replied.

"I love you too."

After that, the call was ended. Onity looked back down at the phone in his hands, checking the time. It was getting late. Though it was only 5:49, it was that time of year where the sky was already dark. Everything just felt later. Moving on, Onity put his phone back in his pocket and continued to walk around the store.

-...-

Onity had looked through a few different stores, but nothing really stood out to him. He wanted a gift that would be meaningful, something that would go against the stereotype of the goofy one giving goofy gifts. Which, they were fun to give, but Onity is more then just a goofy guy. If anything, the goofyness is just an act. He was born to a smart race. He was born a smart kid. Things that humans found difficult to understand, where often tough to 10 year olds in his home world. He knew complicated math and science as if it was just counting numbers. If he really wanted, he could be a billionaire with what he knew and could put together here in the human world. But that's not the life he wanted, nor would it be a life he'd ever dream of.

So, with all this hidden intelligence, why was it so hard to find something for someone he loved. He was probably making a bigger deal out of it then he should, but his humans meant more to him then his own life. They were worth the entire universe and all of the existing dimensions to him. All of reality, known and unknown. Even everything that didn't exist and never would. Heh, Tyler was worth more then a goofy gift.

The air was cold, and the streets slowly losing the nighttime shoppers. This part of downtown didn't get all the night goers, which was sorta sad, since it did have some interesting shops. But Onity liked walking down the sidewalk with nothing but the city lights all around him and the quietness of the one city block. The fur on the hoddie would brush against his cheeks as he walked, and he liked that. He looked up at the sky, taking in the sight.

There was one more shop he was going to look at, one that had some geeky stuff. He hoped they were still open, the time being 6:30. He still had not gotten a text from Mike, but since Mike didn't get off work until 6, and Tyler was all the way across town, it was okay. Onity carried on, walking and walk, taking in the setting around him. He closed his eyes, taking in the sounds of the near night. It was all so beautiful.

But as he was able to focus more on his hearing, a new sound could be heard. In the distance, a rustling...and crying.

Onity stopped walking, opening his eyes. Now that he looked around, he couldn't concentrate so much on hearing. So the noise he heard wasn't detectible by him any more. In frustration, he closed his eyes again, and listened. And he heard it again. It came from back behind him. Onity turned around and looked to find just an empty street with buildings. Nothing new to him. But as he listened again, he heard the crying.

Onity was overcome with curiosity, and walked back down the side walk, closing his eyes to find right where the distressed noises came from. As he got closer, he found that he could hear them without closing his eyes. How did he just walk right pass the sounds before? Was there no crying then? The sound lead Onity to an old shop, one that had dirty front glass windows. One that was long abandoned. Looking inside the glass, it was hard to make out anything in the dark building, other then a dull light in a back room.

But the sound, the crying, was definitely coming from inside.

Onity opened the front door, an old shop bell going off for only a few seconds. So the door was unlocked. Onity looked around, finding it easier to see. But movement from the back room got his attention quickly, as a woman peeked from around the corner with a surprised face. Their eyes met, and Onity saw fear in her.

"Uh, Is everything okay?" Onity asked, still hearing crying. But it wasn't from her. She was only sniffling.

"Stop!" The woman yelled as Onity tried to walk closer. So he stopped.

"Who are you?" She asked after he listened to her.

Onity was confused.

"My...my name's Onity. What's your's?" He asked.

"Nothing of concern to you." She frowned, looking over Onity as if scanning him. She took note of his appearance, his clothes, his everything.

"Why would my name be of concern to you then?" Onity asked.

"Where do you work? Who do you work with?" She asked, shivering.

"I...uh...I don't work. I tutor, I guess?" Onity shrugged. "I don't really need to work much."

The woman looked down, growling to herself. Onity felt the phone in his pocket buzz. A text, but at the wrong time. He ignored it, and the woman looked up again.

"Lucky." She breathed out. "But...but that's good for me."

"Huh? Why?" Onity asked.

"I....I....ugh!" The woman was fighting back her own tears. "You can come closer now!"

The woman disappeared in the back room, where the crying was, and Onity, finding himself in no position to run, followed along. He didn't sense danger, but he also wasn't sure he should be there at that moment. What was wrong with the woman? What did she want him for? Well, if anything were to go wrong, he could just teleport out with his powers.

Onity walked into the dully light back room, only to find the woman shoving something in his hands the moment he turned the corner. The woman, who was covered in dirty clothes and a large thin blanket as a cloak, shoved something into Onity's arms, and then quickly turned around and ran. She ran out of the back door of the small back room. She was in such a rush, she didn't even fully close the door behind her. Onity looked down, his eyes widening when he saw what she'd given him. It was a crying, newborn human child.

"W-WAIT!" Onity yelled, tears forming in his eyes when he realized how much pain the woman must have been in. He ran out the back door, after her.

Onity looked around to find himself in the back ally way of all the shops. Dumpsters and dirt lined the narrow place. He looked around, only to find the woman running towards the streets, probably to get away from him. She was fast, but Onity could tell she was pushing herself in order to escape. Onity didn't want to run with someone so delicate in his arms, so he teleported across the ally way, appearing in front of the woman.

The woman gasped, stopping and nearly falling. Her eyes widened more when she saw the little bits of purple magic appearing and disappearing in the air around Onity. Looking up at his face, she took notice of the slightly hidden purple glow. The fear intensified within her body, and she began to cry. She stepped back, but didn't run. He body wouldn't take it.

"W-What are you doing!?" Onity asked. "T-This is your child, isn't it!? You can give them up!"

"You don't understand!" The woman yelled. "I can't take care of her! I can hardly take care of myself!"

"Why would you give her to me?" Onity asked, struggling to understand why a mother would abandon their child.

"You said it yourself! You don't have to work! You're okay! You have nice clothes, you look like you've got a warm place to stay! You look well fed! I have nothing! I can't feed myself, my clothes are all months old! I stole this blanket! This child will die If I have to hold them any longer!" The woman continued.

"But-"

"No! Stop! I don't care what you do with her! She needs someone better then me!" The woman stepped back.

"She need-"

"Just take her! Abandon her somewhere else! Give her to authorities! Eat her for all I care! Do what you monsters do! Just get her away from me!" The woman cried out.

"There must be something you can do!" Onity cried out as well. The woman's fears and yelling stressed him out, and the crying baby in his hands wouldn't stop it's crying.

"Humans arn't magic, pal!" The woman hissed. "I can't fix anything."

Before Onity could try to stop her any more, the woman grabbed her courage and ran pass Onity, shoving him, and the child, out of the way. Onity stumbled, but caught his balance, the crying of the kid ringing in his ears. There was more buzzing from his pocket again. Mike or Tyler were trying to get a hold of him. Onity ran out of the ally way, looking around for the mother. But she was gone, hiding from him.

Onity closed his eyes, and tried to focus on his hearing, hoping to hear her breathing or her rustling, but all he could hear was the kid's crying. Besides, he was too stressed and shaken to be able to use all his powers to their potential. He looked down at the child in his arms. They had to be a month old, their dark skin dirty, and the light blue blanket they were wrapped in torn and stinky. The baby's arms were reaching every which way, in distress, but all Onity did was look down at them.

"What am I going to do?" Onity asked the child, not expecting anything in reply other then crying.

A gust of cold wind blew pass, and Onity felt the baby shiver. Realizing it was cold, Onity covered the child up with more of their old little blanket, but also held the baby within his jacket, shielding it from as much wind as possible. The crying was a little muffled, and now Onity figured the baby was either tired, scared from the yelling, or hungry. Maybe all three.

His phone went off, rining this time. They were trying to call him. He couldn't answer now! Onity felt pain having to ignore them, as this probably worried them a lot. Ignoring texts and calls was something he had never ever done before. But right now, he had to focus on getting home. He couldn't stand around any longer. He had something more important to pay attention to, believe it or not.

-...-

Onity had gotten home first, and he ran inside the warm house with the baby still in his arms. Turning the lights on as he walked into each room, the household cat watched in curiosity. What was that new smell coming from Onity? That odd, annoying noise? Onity walked into the TV/Living room and placed the baby down on the couch, then getting a clean blanket to lay the baby down on. He removed the horrid blue blanket, leaving the room for only a second to dispose of.

When onity came back, the baby was still in discomfort, and Onity realized the baby was still smelly. They were still dirty, and in need of being cleaned. He didn't feel safe giving the child a proper bath, so he did the next best thing and got a wet rag from the bathroom. The cat watched from a distance as Onity used the rag to clean the child. The warm water calmed the child down. And as the crying slowly calmed down, Onity began to feel his heart rate slow. He finished, placed the rag in the laundry, and then wrapped the baby up in that clean blanket.

It still cried.

"What does it want!?" Onity asked, looking down at the cat. The cat tilted it's head.

"Uh...Is it hungry? Tired? It can go to sleep whenever it want's right?" Onity asked nobody other then himself. "What do human babies eat though? I don't even remember what my mother fed me!"

Onity, holding the now clean but still upset baby in his hands, walked back and forth between the living room and the dining room. He only realized he was still wearing his jacket when he heard his phone go off again. Holding the baby with one arm, he pulled out his phone with the other. It was Tyler calling him. He debated answering, but the more he put it off, the worse he felt. He gulped, and then answered, quickly putting the phone to his ear.

"Onity! Onity, oh thank god!" Tyler's voice came from the other end. "Are you okay! Why the hell aren't you picking up?"

"U-Uh..Well, I Uh" Onity wasn't sure what to say.

"What's that noise? Where are you?" Tyler asked. He could hear the crying, couldn't he?

"I'm, uh, at home! When are you guys getting back?" Onity asked.

"Home? Okay. You don't sound okay, we were going to go get food, but I think we'll just head ho-"

"NO! Get food! I don't care what you get me! Just something salty! Okay?" Onity cut Tyler off.

"What the? Onity, what's wrong?" Tyler asked. Onity never acted like this.

"Just get food and come back home! You'll find out eventually!" Onity shouted.

"..Okay...then. See you later." Tyler's tone made Onity feel real shitty.

"I love you!" Onity replied.

"I love you too." Tyler said. "Bye."

The phone call ended, and Onity placed his phone on the coffee table of the living room. Onity looked down at the child, unsure of what to do. What was he going to say the Tyler and Mike? He knew them well, and he knew they'd not like this. Not the child, but that fact Onity brought home some random kid unexpectedly. And, well, they were three guys who had no experience on caring for children, nor having ever really planned on caring for children. Onity yawned, wondering around the house, the cat following behind.

-...-

"I'm worried about him." Tyler frowned. They'd just pulled out of the drive through of a McDonalds with food in his lap, filling the car with wonderful greasy smells.

"He sounded perfectly okay when I called him before I left work. At least he's home, but what on earth is bothering him." Mike said, keeping his eyes on the road as he drove.

"Onity doesn't get bothered by a lot of things. My stomach hurts thinking about what could be wrong." Tyler frowned.

There was a silence, before Tyler looked over at Mike.

"You think he's hurt?" Tyler asked.

"You said you heard another noise on the phone, right?" Mike asked back.

"Yeah, but it could've been the TV. It's always on when he's home." Tyler mumbled. "What if he got himself hurt? And it's bad?"

"He can heal himself, can't he?" Mike asked.

"Not that well. We can't take him to the hospital or else he'll be taken away." Tyler shivered. Every time he thought about Onity going to the hospital, he was reminded of the time he first met Onity. The random, strange guy walking across the road, nearly getting run over. He remembered asking, and almost calling the ambulance on him.

"Sometimes I think about when we first met him, and how we almost called an ambulance on him." Tyler sighed. "What if that happened? And we'd be that cause of his-"

"Don't forget one of the ladies did call an ambulance, but he escaped. He left, he knew he was in danger." Mike replied. "Whatever is gotten Onity all wound up, he's smart and he can deal with things. If it's bad, he would have told us to stay away from him. But you know he needs us, and he'll feel better when we get there and help him control the situation."

"That's true." Tyler frowned, looking down at the bags of food in his lap.

"Onity loves us, and knows what's best for us. And we know what's best for him." Mike sighed.

"Yeah yeah." Tyler nodded.

"We'll get everything cleared up, and then we'll focus on your birthday! We can't let anything get in the way of that." Mike smiled.

"Heh, yeah." Tyler fought a smile. "Thanks."

"Anything for you." Mike smiled.

Mike did help Tyler calm down a little bit, but the two of them were both equally worried about Onity. The rest of the car ride was silent, and the two eventually finally pulled into their drive way back at the house. The lights were on inside the house, but nothing from outside was visually out of place. The two got out of the car, Tyler carrying the food and Mike carrying the three drinks. Mike locked the car and the two walked to the front door, walking inside the house.

They didn't expect anything, and yet the house being quiet and warm and what not surprised them. They set the food and drinks on the table in the dining room, before looking for Onity.

"Onity! We're home!" Mike said out loud, but he didn't get a reply.

Tyler walked to the living room to find the TV wasn't on. Onity wasn't in there, and he turned back to see Mike.

"He's probably in the bedroom if not in here." Tyler said.

"Let's see then." Mike replied.

The two walked back, down the hallway, checking the quest room and the bathroom as they went by. Once they reached the bedroom, they found the door closed. They walked inside, opening the door quietly into the dark room.

"Onity?" Tyler asked.

They couldn't see much, but the did see a lump in the bed. Mike walked over to his side of the bed and turned on the side lamp. With a small click, the two could see much better. They looked over to see Onity in the bed, holding something close to his chest, almost as if it were a stuffed animal. Tyler's eyes met Onity's, for the oni wasn't asleep. He couldn't be, and even if so, he was a light sleeper and the light would have woken him up.

"Onity?" Tyler asked.

Onity only yawned, but he did open up his arms slowly, trying not to awake the fragile thing he held close. Tyler looked down to see a little mess of blanket in Onity's arms, but also, a slight up and down of breathing. A small snore. Tyler's eyes widen.

"Is that a baby?" Tyler asked, keeping his voice low.

"A baby?" Mike asked, doing the same.

"What are you doing with a baby?" Tyler asked.

"T-This lady s-shoved the baby i-i-into my arms, a-an-and she ran away, and I didn't know what to do so I brought it home."

Tyler looked up at Mike, and Onity could feel that this wasn't good. Onity attempted to get up without waking the child, using some of his mind control powers to help keep the baby from wanting to wake up right this moment. When he was able to get up, he turned to Mike who stood beside him. The three walked out of the room, into the kitchen, so that the baby couldn't possible be awoken from their voices.

"What are we going to do with this baby!?" Tyler was the first to freak out. "We can't take care of a baby!"

"I'm sorry! The lady go away before I could do anything, and then you know me! There's no way I could hurt or abandon any human especially one that could die!" Onity shook his head.

Mike was visually uncomfortable, but tried his best to be calm about this.

"F-First things first, no matter where the kid ends up, we need to be able to feed it for at least a day." Mike said.

"WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF A BABY!" Tyler yelled. "Who do we give it to anyway!?"

"C-Calm down!" Mike tried, but Tyler wouldn't.

"M-Maybe y-your mom could help? She knows how to take care of a baby!" Onity suggested.

Tyler shook his head. "Yeah! Okay! Mom! Onity took a baby from a random lady and know what!?"

"I didn't take it, she abandoned it with me!" Onity's voice cracked. "I teleported in front of her trying to stop her and she called me a monster, said I could eat the thing if that's what monsters do with babies, she didn't care!"

Mike frowned. So the woman even gave her child to whom she assumed to be a danger to humans. He couldn't blame Onity could being stuck with it, but now what.

"Did you try to give it milk or anything?" Mike asked Onity.

The two turned to Mike.

"N-No! I got it sleep. I cleaned it. It smelled before! That's it!." Onity frowned.

"That's it, I'm calling my mom." Tyler turned to walk off, pulling his phone from his pocket.

Mike sighed. Having someone who actually took care of a baby help them decide what to do was the best option for them right now. Mike wasn't hungry any more, and was more worn out then before. He turned around and walked back towards the bedroom, Onity following Mike. Mike walked inside the room, being careful not to do anything to wake the baby.

When he got to the bed, he knelt down beside the bed so that he could look almost eye level with the small thing. The baby was so small, and so delicate. It's skin was dark, and it had puffy cheeks and a small round nose. Though it was a little skinny, probably under fed, Mike could only assume that once Onity had cleaned the little thing off, they looked a little better then before.

"Are we going to get rid of her?" Onity asked, sitting next to Mike on the floor.

"Her?" Mike asked.

"According to how human sexes work, the baby is a she." Onity answered. If she were to be anything else, that was for them to find out later.

Mike sighed.

"You like her, don't you?" Mike frowned.

Onity twitched. "Um....I mean, I like all humans."

"That's not what I mean, but....you don't want to answer, huh?" Mike already knew that Onity had some sort of connection with the kid. He was quick to like something or someone, and when someone needed him, it leads to a quicker attachment. The baby needed him when it was left with him.

"Tyler doesn't like her, does he?" Onity asked.

"No, no, that's not it. He didn't expect to come home to find a tiny breakable little human in his bed, that's it. He's just as worried for it as you are." Mike answered.

"I thought so." Onity sighed.

There was pause, and then Onity leaned over, leaning his head on Mike's side.

"Are we going to get rid of her?" He asked again.

Mike paused, knowing the truth would hurt Onity.

"We...we don't have the money to raise a kid."

"The woman didn't either. But...we won't end up like her, will we?" Onity asked.

Mike looked down at Onity.

"Kids are big responsibilities. Considering the baby's age, I don't think the baby caused her to  end up with no money. Other things lead up to her being unable to sustain money, thus being unable to buy anything for either herself or the child."

"She asked me, before I knew she had a baby, what my name was and if I worked." Onity said.

"And you said...?" Mike asked.

"I said my name was Onity, and that I didn't work much. I tutor, but I was well off anyway."

"Ah. She figured if you were okay with just that, you had support, and you could care for her kid better then she could. I bet if you were homeless as well, she'd have fought you off." Mike guessed.

"She was homeless?"

"I'm only guessing. I wasn't there. I don't even know what she looks like." Mike shook his head.

The door to the room opened, and Tyler walked in. He found them sitting beside the bed, and he joined them.

"My mom's coming over, but she said she'd stop at the store for some supplies. I think Rose was with her, so Rose might be here too." Tyler said.

"Oh. Okay." Onity nodded his head, leaning into Mike's side more.

"Onity had asked what we were going to do with the girl." Mike told Tyler.

"Hm?" Tyler looked at the two.

"Y-Yeah...I did."

Tyler didn't have an answer. Right now, he couldn't picture himself being a dad. All of this was too sudden. It was for Mike too, so how could Onity think they'd have an answer right now?

"I know that no mater where the kid ends up, we're caring for it for at the very least tonight, probably tomorrow too." Tyler answered.

Onity leaned up, off of Mike. He looked down at his lap.

"I don't expect the baby to stay asleep for the whole night. Damn, whose ready to have to stay up and care for a baby while being sleep deprived." Tyler said, only humoring himself really.

"There are three of us. We can do shifts." Mike tried to lighten the load.

"We're probably going to need to reschedule tomorrow."

Onity looked over to Tyler, still feeling emotions of uncomfortableness and distress from the guy.

"I'm sorry I ruined your birthday." Onity pulled his legs to his chest, wrapping his arms around them.

Tyler's eyes widen to that apology, surprised to what it meant. Onity felt like he'd done something wrong, and that he'd messed up the whole birthday thing for tomorrow.

"Wha? No! You didn't ruin my birthday. Am I overreacting?" Tyler asked. He sat closer to Onity. "Sure, we had plans, but I'm not a kid anymore. If my birthday needs to be set off a day, who the hell cares? I don't. This...this baby needs our help right now, and that's more important. You did the right thing, Onity."

Mike nodded his head.

Onity leaned against Tyler's side.

"I wanted to get you something meaningful for your birthday, but I couldn't find anything."

Tyler laughed, but then stopped himself in order not to wake the sleeping kid.

"You went out to find me a birthday present and brought home a baby." He muffled his laughter.

"Look, If you want to get me something meaningful, you can do that whenever you want. But no item on earth is more meaningful then you, dumbass."

Onity smiled.

"Thank you."

Suddenly, in the distance, the door bell went off. Tyler stood up.

"It's probably Rose. Too quick to be mom if she was going to the store." Tyler said.

Before Tyler could leave the room, Onity stood up and ran over, hugging Tyler. Tyler gasped, nearly having the air squeezed from his lungs.

"I love you, nerd."

"C-Come on! We got to answer the door!"

"Shh!" Mike shushed from beside the bed, standing up as well.

"Oh yeah!" Tyler lowers his voice. "Sorry!"

The two left the room, and Mike turned to look at the kid.

Thank god they were getting help.
