A loud, screeching bell sounded to wake the inhabitants of the building, the ones with more sensitive hearing curling up in their rooms and waiting for the sound to stop, unable to do much more than that through the agony that came with the alarm. Midday was one of the many that  suffered through this, though much less than some. She only had one ear now, the other having been removed many years ago. She held her shaking daughter close - her children both had two ears, as the scientists had yet to remove them, or add more - shushing her and rubbing her back gently to try and calm the juvenile. She herself had a pounding headache from the sound, but she ignored it in favor of taking care of her child. She had a feeling Night, her best friend and the father of her children, was having just about as much luck with Nightfall, their son, as she was with Twilight. The alarm finally stopped ringing, and Midday sighs in relief, continuing to comfort the younger.

“Shh, Twi. It’s okay, it’s okay… I’m here, mommy’s here. I promise. The painful sound is gone now.” She whispers, pulling Twilight’s trembling form closer to her. She waits for a few moments longer before picking up Twilight, slipping off the bed and waiting for the small flap they shove food trays through to open up, knowing that if she didn’t eat then they weren’t feeding her that day. She exhales slowly, tilting her head forward as her golden tail tipped with black swipes the floor nervously, and she checks over the child in her arms quickly. She’s awake, thankfully, ears still pressed against her head in discomfort. She didn’t complain about the pain, she had learned long ago that nobody would help. Her mom was the only person that cared, after all. She buried her face into Midday’s shoulder, releasing a shuddering breath as she calmed down. Her head pounded and her ears rang, but it was fine. It was normal. It didn’t matter, she repeated in her head as her eyelids drooped, head falling onto Midday’s shoulder as she fell back asleep.

It was much later when she awoke, and her mom was gone. Tests? Probably. She sighed, head drooping as she hugged her oversized tail close to her body, waiting for Midday’s return. Her ears pricked up as she heard the door open, and she looked up. Her mom had the same dull look she always had after the tests, but there seemed to be an underlying emotion. Twilight sniffed, panic? That was weird. Midday held her close, whispering something over and over to herself. She pulled Twilight closer, whimpering softly.

“I’ll keep you safe. Don’t worry. I won’t let them take you.” Twilight’s eyes widened, take her? They wanted to take her away? She held onto Midday tightly, she didn’t want to go anywhere. Her mom would protect her. They stayed like that for a long while, only separating when the door opens once again, and they’re told to follow. They do, and they’re led to a blank white room. Small, eight feet by eight feet and with a nine foot ceiling. It’s hard to tell the difference between the walls and the floor. Disrupting the white is two black figures, one noticeably shorter than the other. Midday takes a moment to adjust to the sheer brightness of the room, ear flicking as it twists to face the figures. She blinks a few times before her tail sways, ear perking up as she picks up  Twilight and runs over to the figures.

“Night!” She says happily, and the taller smiles weakly.

“Hey, Day. It’s been a few years. How are you and Twi?” Twilight tilted her head, who was he? Who was with him? Mom knew him. She perked up at her name, how did he know her? He glanced down to her, watching her for a moment.

“She’s gotten big,” He murmurs, leaning forward to rest his forehead against Midday’s, and she does the same soon after, “She looks like you. Totally got my hair though.” To that, Midday chuckles.

“Got my eyes, though.” She sent him a look, pouting “I have black hair too. Hows Nightfall? He looks good, considering…” She trails off, ear falling flat against her head, and Night nuzzles her gently.

“He’s been doing okay. The alarms have been hitting him hard, though. It worries me.”
“Same with Twilight,” She goes silent before backing up, setting her very confused daughter down. She squats ear flicking back as she points at the other child, with hair almost as blonde as Midday’s and tipped with black highlights, ears pressed against his heads and horns far too large for his head.

"Meet your brother, sweetheart." Midday murmured happily, and Twilight's eyes widened. She had a brother??

"Hello!" She chirped, voice hoarse from lack of use, and she coughs a few times to rid herself of the feeling of something being caught in her throat. Nightfall looks down at her, blinking slowly

"... Hello," He says hesitantly, voice quiet. Twilight grins, quickly starting up a conversation with Nightfall. Midday turns back to Night, smile falling as she sighs heavily.

"We need to get out of here." Night raises an eyebrow at that,

"We've needed to get out of here our entire time here. Why the urgency?"

"They're going to take Twi away, and I can't… I can't let that happen. I can't let them take another one of our babies, Night… I just...” She trails off, voice cracking. She buries her face into Night’s chest, taking a few moments to collect herself. She shakes her head, whimpering near silently into him, ear pressed flat against her head. She takes a deep breath, moving back and looking up at Night.

“We need to get out of here.”

It took them a while to come up with a plan, barely managing to finish it by the time their family meet up was over. They worked to tell everyone they could, and most who were told joined in on the plan. It was simple on paper, cause a commotion to distract enough of the guards that Midday can break as many people out as possible, and then run like mad hell for the doors, breaking as much equipment as they can on the way. Simple, right? Not really. It was easier said than done, and it took a few weeks of planning even after coming up with the plan, as they had to pay closer attention than before at the guards and the scientist’s routines, memorizing them until they could tell you exactly which second they did what. It was like clockwork every day. They started their plan.

Doll, a human with enough non-human parts added on that she could barely be considered human anymore, would start the distraction, throwing herself at the guards and using her removable limbs to her advantage, tearing off her limbs only to shove them right back into place once she was done on multiple occasions.

Then, Void would join in, a large wolf black as the night as with grey wings that didn’t look like they belonged to him. He had the advantage of being able to fly, sending aerial attacks on the guards. There were many others, Karm, Gray, and Blitz among them. Security flocked to the scene, and Midday could barely believe it. The plan was working! She pulled Twilight with her, picking her up as she ran out of their now open cell, running to the room across from hers, jet black strings creeping from her fingertips and sliding into the lock, easily picking it and releasing the creature inside. She repeated the process as fast as she could on as many other cells, getting the ones that knew lock picking to help her. They soon had a rather large amount of people, monsters, and animals, and they all looked to Midday. Twilight watched as her mother nodded, face grim and eyes narrowed into slits beneath her hair. With that nod, all hell breaks loose as everyone runs to the group that had originally been causing a commotion, with many breaking doors, ruining any equipment they find, and freeing as many as they can. Their personal grudges did not matter now, none of them wished this fate upon another being. The stronger ones helped the weak and the sick, running in a different direction-toward the exit. Midday continued to run to the other group, Night and Nightfall were there, she couldn't leave them here, she couldn't-

So she ran, and continued running long after her legs burned, sending her threads forth once she spotted the group, entangling the startled guards in them and hanging their bodies from the ceiling, breaths coming in heavy. Night signals for the others to back down, pulling Nightfall with him with his tail as he ran to Midday, pulling her into a tight embrace before releasing her again, glaring up at the guards that were still strung onto the ceiling. A few flicks of Midday’s strings and some flailing later, the guards were dead, and she dropped their bodies onto the ground, cringing as she held Twilight closer to her. Her ear swivels, and she freezes at the sound of two pairs of footsteps.

“Run.” She commanded, loud and clear for all to hear.

And boy did they run! Everyone darted in different directions, all heading to the same place. The exit. Midday and Night stuck together, holding their children close as they ran, taking sharp turns and nearly tripping over more than once. They almost cried in joy when they saw the bright red of the sign, reading in capital letters, ‘EXIT’. Midday froze before they could reach the doors, watching as Night ran past her with Nightfall in his arms. She sets Twilight down, flinching when the footsteps slowly come closer.

“Mommy?” Twilight tilted her head, what was mom doing? Shouldn’t they be leaving? They could leave!

“Run, my sweet little girl. Mommy will come back, I promise. Mommy just needs to make sure the people responsible never get us again, okay?” Midday leans down, kissing Twilight’s forehead with a small, weak smile. “Go back to Daddy, please. Mommy will be back.”

Twilight hesitated, she didn’t want to leave Mom! She whimpers, taking a step back, then another, then she turns tail and runs outside, leaving Midday alone in the facility. She straightens, face twisting to a glare as she stalked throughthe hallways, making her way toward the main power center. There was a high chance she wouldn’t be able to get out once she did this, but she didn’t care. As long as they were trapped here, she would be fine.

By the time she had reached the power center, her rage had long since grown, but she didn’t react. She only continued walking. She looked up at the core, staring at the bright green with a blank look on her face. Within seconds, black strings cover the place, pulling pipes out of place and shattering the main core. She had to pull herself up frm the floor to avoid being dunked in battery juice, and she sniffed, glaring at the green liquid. It was basically acid, and it hurt like hell. She made a path over the liquid, knotting the strings together to make a web that she could walk on. As soon as she was on clear ground, she bolted for the exit. She knew it was closed, but false hope led her to run anyway, hoping and wishing that the door was open and she could see her little starshines once again. Her eyes widened when she saw that the doors were in fact open, having been forced to stay open with a stick. She ran faster, knowing that it was very likely the stick would not hold for much longer, she had heard it crack once from where she was. She ran through the doors, snapping the stick in half with her weight. She barely managed to pull her tail out of the way as the doors snapped shut with an audible slam. She breathed heavily, staying still for a few minutes to catch her breath, clutching her tail close as she tried to calm her beating heart, chest aching from the adrenaline rush and the lingering fear.

Once calmer, she straightened, starting to walk only to be pulled back. Why was she pulled back? She tries to turn to see, and once she bends her spine to a painful degree, she blinks. Oh. Her hair had gotten caught in the door. She couldn’t cut it on her own, but did she really want to call for help for this? She sighed, staying quiet before yipping, loud and high pitched. A tone for Night, a call for him to help, and only him. After a few short moments Night was in front of her, and she smiled weakly, waving.

“Hey, Nighty… um… can you, uh, help me please?” She seems nervous, and Night notices her predicament, nodding.

“Yeah, sure. Give me a moment.” He moves behind her, and she can feel the pressure on her head lessen as he does… whatever he’s doing. She trusts him. When he calls out a ‘done!’ she turns around, and promptly freezes upon seeing a good majority of her hair laying limp from the door. He gives her an apologetic look.

“Sorry, Mid. There wasn’t another way. I looked.”

Midday stays silent, staring at the locks before sighing “It’s alright, Night. It’s just hair. Did you at least cut it well?” She gives him a small grin, and he laughs in return.

“You’re a little lopsided, but you look good. Still hot, don’t worry.” To that, Midday laughs as well.

“Good to know. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m tired and really want to see my kids.”

Night chuckles, “Yeah, me too. Come with me?” He asks, offering his hand. Midday smiles and takes it, tail swaying happily behind her.

“I missed you, Night.”

“Me too, Midday. Let’s go home.”

Midday nods, smiling ever so slightly wider. Together, they left that wretched laboratory, walking to a small town the rest of the escapees had found that had offered their assistance. Midday cried as she embraced her children once again, ear pressed back and tail wagging.

This, she thinks, I will never lose again.

She holds her children close, glancing at Night and taking his hand once more as they began a new journey, ready to face whatever came at them. Together. Forever and always.
