Ring!
The school bell signaled the end of the day as hundreds of students made their way down the stairs. Tenko met up with her best friend, Himiko and the two began to chat about their day. Well, more like one. Tenko tended to ramble, jumping from topic to topic, while Himiko listened.
"Hey Himiko!"
"Hi..." Himiko mumbled in response like she did every day. Tenko started to proceed with her mentioning every out of the ordinary scenario that happened.
"So, today at lunch there was this table behind me filled with a bunch of degenerates, and one of them had given me a banana! I was afraid they had done something to it, but all they did was that they wrote, 'You are the chosen one'. It was so weird!" Tenko explained.
"Nyeh... I remember that happened to me at lunch too..." Himiko recalled.
"What?! Really?!" Tenko exclaimed in surprise. A few students near the two were eyeing them oddly at Tenko's loud tone, but Tenko didn't care, and Himiko was too lazy to do anything in defense.
"Yeah... I just ate the banana, since I was hungry." Himiko stared at the ground as she spoke.
"B-But..." Tenko stammered. "That was from a male! What if they had done something to it?"
"...Nyeh, I don't know. I'm tired..." Himiko yawned and stared at the ground. She was glad she had Tenko as a friend, but sometimes she took her for granted.
They continued to talk about various topics as they left the school grounds and headed for home. Since they lived in the same neighborhood and not too far away from school, neither girl needed to take the bus. Himiko eventually left to her house and Tenko to hers.
The thing is, you never seem to realize how important something is to you. Until it's gone, that is, whether temporarily or permanently.
And that was what happened to Himiko the following morning. "Nyeh..." she struggled to get out of bed like usual, being so lazy. After eating breakfast and brushing her teeth, she had grabbed her backpack, ready to leave for school. But something seemed off. The house seemed too empty, she felt too alone for Himiko's liking. Then she realized why.
Tenko.
Tenko always visited Himiko in the morning and the two walked to school. She never forgot. She was never late. But Himiko never thanked Tenko either. She took her for granted, like she did with many things.
Trying not to worry, Himiko promptly left the house and headed for Tenko's house. She rang the doorbell a few times, her heart beating quickly, hoping nothing bad had happened. After a few moments, the door opened, revealing Tenko with a blanket wrapped around her. "Hey Himiko!" she said a bit groggily.
"Nyeh... hi..."
"I have a fever! So, um, I won't be able to go to school today," Tenko said, gesturing to the blanket around her and somehow sounding confident at the same time.
"A fever?" Himiko said with a bit of surprise. Tenko rarely got sick, and she always came to school every day because she wanted perfect attendance. "Maybe I could use my magic to cure it."
"U-Um, I don't think your magic will-"Tenko suddenly stopped speaking as she looked at the clock behind her. "Oh, Himiko! You better go, I don't want you to be late!"
"Huh? Already time to go...?"
"Yeah! Bye, Himiko! Make sure to call me when you get there!" Tenko waved to Himiko as she yelled.
Soon enough, Himiko arrived at school. It did feel a bit odd to not have her best friend beside her, but Himiko dismissed the thought as the school day went on.
As she went to lunch, she realized she had to sit by herself. Never did Himiko realize that Tenko actually took up a big part of her life. She always just thought of her as a close friend, but now that Tenko isn't here, Himiko felt something else. She felt empty. People eyed the magician like they usually did, especially now that Tenko wasn't here.
"Hey, are you sure you're supposed to he in this school?" a voice spat in her face. She recognized the voice very well. Kaito Momota, one of the most popular boys in the school. "You're even shorter then Kokichi, I think!"
"U-Um..." Himiko muttered. She usually would be able to say a response, but her throat tightened up when she tried to speak.
"Can't speak either? Maybe you should go back to preschool and learn how!" another kid chimed in. Kokichi Ouma, one of the trickiest kids in the school.
"K-Kokichi...?" Kaito asked in surprise as he turned to the purple-haired male. The two started to talk about other matters as Himiko ignored them. Something was going through her, and it was because of Tenko. But what, exactly...?
The thought had plagued her mind until the end of the day approached. Finally she could go to Tenko's house. Himiko had never felt so excited for something. She walked at a slightly faster pace then she usually did. Her heart was beating faster then it usually did. Finally, she arrived at Tenko's house and rang the bell.
Tenko answered, blanket still wrapped around her. "Himiko! Thank God you're okay!"
"Nyeh... why wouldn't I be?" Himiko asked matter-of-factly.
"You never called me when you got to school! I was afraid something happened to you!" Tenko exclaimed. She sounded like Himiko's mom...
"Sorry..." Himiko apologized.
"It's fine! I'm glad you're h-" Suddenly, Himiko interrupted Tenko and gave her a hug. She didn't care if Tenko was sick.
"Himiko...?" Tenko muttered in surprise. Himiko didn't answer and continued to keep her arms wrapped around the taller girl. Eventually, Tenko hugged Himiko as well.
"Nyeh... you feel kind of warm, Tenko..." Himiko murmured.
"That's cuz I have a fever, silly!" Tenko laughed.
"Oh, right..." Himiko's mind shifted to when Kaito had bullied her earlier that day. She considered telling Tenko, but decided against it. Besides, that didn't matter anymore.
The only thing that mattered was Tenko.
