[6] Not My Cup of Tea | Creative Writing
Someone walks by your table and drops a napkin in front of you, trying to be discreet. It is a note that says "Get out now-while you can!"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I thought it was going to be another casual Friday afternoon spent in my favorite café, but at that point in time, I had no clue what would happen in the next five minutes. I sat at the corner table, my laptop open on random writing prompts and homework as usual. I was so engulfed in my work that I hardly noticed the young man walk in and sit at the table beside mine, his face serious and his hair a mess. A minute later, he already seemed to be leaving - but not before he walked past me, dropping a napkin on the table.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"W-Wait-" I called, picking it up in my hand and holding it out to his retreating figure, but he didn't seem to hear me. "You dropped this." He was already through the door. I was undoubtedly confused. Why did he leave it? Did he drop it on purpose? Glancing down at the papery napkin in my palm, I noticed some markings on the inside. Unfolding it, I saw that it was a warning: "Get out now - while you can!"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Everybody, stop where you are! Do not move!" Clearly, I got the warning too late. I stood rigidly, not daring to look back and see who was shouting. It was a woman's voice, one I had never heard, but it still sent terrified chills through my entire body. "We're looking for a young man who comes here often - auburn hair, grey eyes..." My heart skipped a beat. That was a description of me. I heard footsteps nearing me when the man who had dropped the napkin in front of me ran through the doors, grabbed me by the arm, and pulled me outside.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The moment we rushed through the door, I heard yelling inside the café. The only words I could understand in the jumble of screams were 'two fugitives'. In all honesty, it took my brain a moment to realize one of those fugitives was me. Silently praying to God that this was all just a bad dream, I followed closely behind the dark haired man whose hand was still tight around my wrist. He didn't look back at me or say anything. He was too busy running for his life, and I was too busy trying not to trip. I'd always imagined how it would feel to be in this sort of action movie scenario, but I was quickly learning that it wasn't at all as much fun as I had thought.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"W-Where are we going? Isn't this illegal? Who even are you?" I shouted at the young man, helplessly trying to sound calm. Slightly glancing back at me, he finally said, "We can talk once we're in the clear, okay?" Not knowing what else to do, I nodded and kept quiet, going wherever he pulled me. We kept turning corner after corner, never slowing the pace. My breathing was ragged, and I could have sworn my heart was about to leap out of my chest from beating too fast. Finally, after what felt like hours of nonstop running, he led us into a sidestreet and stopped.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Releasing my arm from his grip, he slouched against a wall and let out a sigh. "Sorry I grabbed you so tight," he muttered through heavy breaths. Glancing down at my wrist, I noticed it was a bright pink where he had held it. "I didn't trust you not to get yourself caught." He chuckled lightly, smiling at me. I wondered how he could seem so happy when we were both being chased. "Oh!" he suddenly exclaimed, making me jump back. "My name's Carter. You wanted to know who I was."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Um... Nice to meet you, Carter. I'm Kameron."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Yeah, I ah, know who you are, Kameron." He looked shyly at the sidewalk, shoving his hands into his pockets awkwardly. Raising an eyebrow curiously, I waited for him to explain what he meant. "Someone placed a false target on you, don't know who and don't know why, but it labeled you as a high threat. I overheard that those agents back at the café were being sent to take you in, did some research, and found the faked criminal record. I guess those dopes just weren't paying enough attention to see that it wasn't real. Anyway, I knew it'd be bad if you were caught, so I came to get you out, and now we're here."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I was honestly stunned. I didn't know what to say for a solid minute and a half. All I could do was stare at him, my jaw hanging open. "I can't believe my life could have been ended from a fake target," I finally muttered, sliding against the wall down to the concrete. "Wow." It was a lot to take in for an already stressed out college student. "I guess I've seriously got to thank you, Carter," I chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Don't mention it," he replied, smiling and patting me on the back. "I'm gonna be helping you out for quite a while."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Then I guess I'd better get ready to do a lot more running, huh?"
