What Friends Are For: Sophitz
@Penguin4evar, your platonic Sophitz! I decided to merge this into the weekly oneshot because I have homework, unfortunately, so this will be the weekly oneshot!
Not late this week! *cheers* Finally-
"No, no no no no!" Sophie frowned, shaking her head adamantly. "You can't make me!"
"Watch me," Fitz smirked. "We're going."
"Nope! I will dissolve into tiny particles of dust after falling off the side of the rollercoaster because my harness thing will manage to fall off of me on a loop and I will die. And my last words before my body lands on the concrete gazillion miles below will be 'I knew I shouldn't have listened to him' and those will haunt you forever until you're lying on your deathbed at one hundred years old and think 'If only I hadn't made Sophie ride that rollercoaster' then you'll peacefully pass away in your sleep and my ghost will be waiting to say 'I told you so.'"
Fitz blinked. "Well that escalated quickly."
"It will happen. Stuff like that always seems to happen to me," Sophie insisted.
"Soph, tripping over a power cord is not the same as falling out of a rollercoaster."
"It could be. You never know."
Fitz facepalmed. "Won't you just try? You'll never know if you don't try!"
Sophie hesitated, swallowing back the 'Since I'll be dead, I won't get another try' waiting at the tip of her tongue.
Fitz looked so... earnest. And even though she'd gotten over her crush years before, and his eyes didn't affect her the same way anymore, they held a plaintative pleading that weakened her resolve.
"Fine," she groaned, sighing as Fitz beamed. "But-" she added as he opened his mouth- "If the roller coaster kills me, I will haunt you forever."
"Deal," Fitz agreed, holding out his hand to shake.
She took it with a smile, only to yelp as he grabbed her hand and ran off towards one of the smaller (but no less intimidating) roller coasters.
He yanked her into the line and stood behind her as it moved forward slightly. Some might interpret it as a gentlemanly gesture, but Sophie knew he was trying to block her escape route.
She watched the coaster climb up and up... and realized that Fitz had been smart to stop her from chickening out. She swallowed hard as it climbed higher and higher and took a step back, almost flinching as it came over the top and hurtled back down, delighted screams reaching her on the ground.
She backed into Fitz's chest, and he grabbed her shoulder, spinning her around so she faced him.
"Do you seriously not want to do this?" he asked, concern furrowing his brow. Sophie gulped as the coaster filled with screaming people zipped by, right above her head. "You don't have to."
"No," Sophie's voice shuddered, and she cleared it. "I- I want to do it."
"Really?" Fitz eyed her quizzically. "Because a few minutes ago-"
"I want to be... brave." Sophie felt a little silly saying the words, since it wasn't like she was going into a one-on-one fight with big bird or anything (one of her worst nightmares). But this was one of her fears; and she wanted to face it.
Fitz searched her face, and she stuck out her bottom lip stubbornly and lifted her chin. "I want to do this."
"Okay, if you're sure," Fitz agreed. But he laced their fingers together, and Sophie smiled as he squeezed her hand gently.
"Thanks," she said quietly, as the line moved forward again. She glanced ahead of her and realized that it was their turn to go onto the screaming upsidedown train of death. (she liked being dramatic; it was the perk of being a theater kid, she constantly told herself, even though she just loved being overly dramatic for no reason)
"Fitz?" she whispered, images of tumbling from the sky flashing through her head.
He squeezed her hand, gently guiding her forward. "If you don't want to-"
"I want to... just... stay with me?" She took a deep, calming breath, focusing on the very secure harnesses that were being strapped around the waists and shoulders of the people sitting down in their seats, chattering and laughing with anticipation.
"Of course," he said softly, smiling as he led her to one of the seats and sat down next to her. He didn't let go of her hand, not even when one of the workers came over and checked their seatbelts to make sure they were fastened securely.
Sophie clenched his hand so tightly her knuckles turned white as the coaster started moving; her hand was gripped tightly around the bars at her shoulders, and she knew her eyes were wide and terrified as they started the slow, steady climb up.
Trying to muster up some courage and bravado, she told Fitz, "If I don't make it, tell Keefe not to stage his Mr. Snuggles and Ella marriage like he was planning; Ella will be a single lady forever and not even Mr. Snuggles can change that."
Fitz snorted. They were almost at the top now, and he was still holding her hand, the other arm relaxed in his lap. "Mr. Snuggles will be so sad. He was so looking forward to it."
Sophie giggled, and some of her anxiety eased.
Until she felt the coaster start to tip over the top, and she hardly had time to open her mouth before they were falling and she was falling and she was screaming but she could hardly hear herself over the wind and the screams of the others.
Her stomach dipped and twirled with the drop, and when they evened out she could hardly draw another breath before she was shrieking again, her fingers locked tightly around her shoulder bars, ripped free from Fitz's grasp. He was holding on too, but instead of terror filled screams he was whooping with excitement.
Sophie saw a loop coming up and squeezed her eyes shut, ready to be flipped upside down at a gazillion miles an hour. But the sensation never came, and when she dared to peek one eye open the loop was already behind them.
She hadn't even felt it.
The wind rushed through her ponytail, and she was sure it still managed to get tangled. Her eyes were streaming with the force of the wind and her stomach was still twirling but somehow, it felt good.
Fun.
Exhilerating.
"THIS IS AMAZING!" Sophie shouted, her words torn away as soon as they left her mouth.
She didn't let go of the bars around her shoulders- she wasn't quite brave enough yet- but she whooped with pure adrenaline, relishing the feeling of the cool wind on her face and the swoop in her stomach as they dipped and sped up and finally slowed down as it reached the beginning again.
They stepped off the ride, cheeks flushed red and hair messed up. Fitz was grinning wildly, and Sophie knew her face held the same expression.
"Did you like it?" Fitz asked, his voice a little crackly from the wind.
"Yes!" Sophie responded, bouncing on the balls of her feet before forcing herself to stop and take a deep breath.
"Fitz?"
"Yeah?"
"Thanks," she said softly. "For... being there."
"Of course," Fitz smiled. "That's what friends are for, right?"
Sophie grinned. "That's what friends are for."
Yep! If you can't tell, I LOVE rollercoasters. Fitz wouldn't be the type to just let loose and wave his hands in the air, but he'd totally love them. This was a human AU if you couldn't tell, so Sophie isn't the one introducing them to rollercoasters but I thought this would be a cute platonic moment for them
Unless you take this in a shippy way, in which case go right ahead and ship your heart out
Didn't proofread this one, but it was more light and happy and just one scene then most of my others so it should be fine-
So yeah! Tell me if you liked it! I love hearing your constructive criticism, comments, etc! Love y'all!
