Shattered Ice: Juline and Edaline

Okay... this may or may not be a Frozen au. If you don't want to get the songs in your head, you might want to skip this one.

Just a warning for that-

"Don't feel," Juline reminded herself. "Don't feel, don't feel, don't feel."

(maybe if she repeated the words over and over again, they would be true)

Her fingers gripped the railing of the balcony so tightly that her nails dug into wood, the sting helping her regain a semblance of control. Even if she was never really in control.

The thought was enough to make ice shoot from her fingers, and a shard the size of her middle finger punched straight through the wood.

Juline snatched back her hands, cradling them together as she whispered, "Don't feel, don't feel, don't feel."

Again and again and again.

As frost crept over the covered balcony, the lack of sunlight feeling like a curse as a thousand spears of ice slowly grew, surrounding her with accusations and reminders.

They pointed straight at her heart, and Juline caught a breath in her throat, choking on the freezing cold air. "Don't feel," she repeated fruitlessly, resting her elbows on the railing as she placed her head in her hands, rubbing at her eyes.

A sob ripped from her throat, and the spears of ice shattered into a million tiny pieces onto the ground, the tinkling as they settled sounding like thunder in Juline's pounding heart.

...

Edaline twirled, admiring the way her dress twisted around her legs as she spun. It was green and swishy and perfect; plus, it complemented her auburn hair.

She wore dresses every day, but they were never this fancy. They were never special or frilly or artfully designed, and they were never seen.

(Edaline was never seen)

But today, it would be.

Today, she would meet actual people, besides the servants and cooks and guards that never had time for a lonely princess, desperate for someone to talk to.

Today, everything would change

For the first time in what seemed like forever, her life would finally begin.

"Finally," she repeated over and over as she waited for the gates to open, her foot tapping impatiently on the ground.

Freedom awaited, and even though it would only last one day, Edaline intended to make the most of it.

...

Juline wrapped her arms around her stomach.

The burning in her eyes was from the freezing wind whipping around her, she told herself. The aching feeling in her throat came from the dry air, and the trembling in her limbs came from the cold she didn't feel.

It wasn't because she'd just been coronated queen and promptly exposed the secret that she'd kept for over twenty years.

It wasn't because she'd probably ruined any chance of a peaceful alliance with the surrounding kingdoms.

It wasn't because she'd betrayed her parents' final wishes.

It wasn't because she couldn't get Edaline's face out of her head.

This hollow feeling in her stomach... she could live with it.

It wasn't her problem anymore, Juline reminded herself, allowing the frost in her fingers to creep out across the ice, twisting into a little statue of a doll. One of the dolls they used to play with.

She clenched her fist, and it shattered, dissolving into snow that Juline directed off the steps with a flick of her wrist.

She stood, allowing herself to inhale the crisp, cool air.

And that, Juline thought, was better than anything she could have experienced back in Arendelle.

Because this... was freedom.

Freedom

Juline tasted the word on her tongue, speaking it a few times. Her voice was jarring in the quiet palace of ice, faintly echoing before fading away.

Freedom.

The hollow feeling in her very bones would go away, because for once in her life, Juline was free.

(and the cold had never bothered her anyway)

...

Edaline shivered so hard her teeth rattled as she desperately rubbed her hands up and down her sleeveless arms, trying to warm them. She was pretty sure her legs were completely numb from having to plunge up and down into the snowdrifts, not to mention aching and sore.

"Why. Did it have. To be snow," she gritted out through chattering teeth. "Why not a desert, or water. A flood would've been better than snow."

She struggled to withdraw her foot from a thick pile of snow, almost falling.

"If you'd just told me, this wouldn't have happened," Edaline complained through numb lips. "I could have helped. You didn't need to hide."

She was talking to herself, she knew. There was no possible way Juline could hear her. But she was cold, and wet, and numb, and angry, and terrified, and maybe Juline would be right around the bend, glaring but laughing.

Maybe they could go home.

Maybe the gates could stay open.

Maybe... maybe she could be free.

"You didn't need to lie, Juline," she whispered, realizing she couldn't feel her fingers. "You didn't need to lie to me."

She took another step, but there was nothing but air; and then she was falling, sliding down a hill as the snow burned her skin until she landed in a river with a splash, and her clothes froze around her.

...

"Please!" Edaline's words were a gasp, and Juline hesitated, her foot pausing as it hovered over the next step.

"Please! Please don't... leave me. Not again." Her sister's words were desperate, and Juline closed her eyes for a beat before continuing up the steps, taking them two at a time.

"Give up, Eda! You're safer without me!" The old nickname slid off her tongue easily, and a pang of regret slipped through her stomach.

A single snowflake fell from the ice chandelier up ahead, and Juline tracked it with her eyes as it drifted down. Slowly. Lazily.

As if it wasn't yet another sign that her hold was breaking, that the tentative control she'd gained was fraying and close to shattering entirely.

And when it did... she wasn't sure what she'd do. To herself, to her new home... or to Edaline.

But it wouldn't be good.

And the fear was already rising in her throat, her powers needing an outlet.

"We can do this together, Juline!" Edaline called, somehow nod slipping as she ran up the icy stairs.

"Jules," Juline said out loud without meaning to.

"What?"

"You... you used to call me Jules," Juline said softly, stopping as she reached the end of the stairs. A sharp pain stabbed through her, and she shook her head to diminish it. She turned to face her sister, throwing out her hands as Edaline came closer. "But it doesn't matter, you're not safe here! You have to leave!"

Edaline's face softened. "Jules-"

The name from her sister's lips sent memories flashing through Juline's head, memories of two loving parents and a snowman who liked warm hugs.

("Jules," Edaline had said, "Do you want to build a snowman?")

"No." Juline's breath caught in her throat.  "Don't call me-"

("Catch me!" her little sister had squealed, jumping from one drift to the next. "Jules!")

"But you just said-" Edaline's face held only confusion. She had no idea what had happened that night.

("Fear will be your enemy," the troll had told her)

"I can't-" An icicle shot from the ceiling, impaling itself in the ground. Edaline flinched, taking a step back, and Juline gasped, although it sounded more like a sob.

(and she was so, so afraid)

"Please, Eda- Edaline. Go back, marry your prince. Rule the kingdom, open the gates, be safe," Juline begged, her control fraying as another snowflake drifted from the ceiling. "Be free."

"Kinda hard to do that in the freezing cold," Edaline mumbled, twisting her mittened hands together.

Juline felt the color drain from her face.

(a chill swept over her skin, but it wasn't from the cold)

"What?"

"You kind of set off an eternal winter... everywhere."

"Everywhere?"

(so, so, so afraid)

"Everywhere," Edaline confirmed. Juline took a step back and slipped, almost falling. The shock made ice shoot from her fingers as her tenuous control slipped, pinging off the walls. "But it's okay, you can just unfreeze it!"

"No I can't, I- I don't know how!" Juline clenched her hands into fists, and snow swirled around the room, picking up into a full force gale. She'd failed, failed, failed-

"Sure you can, I know you can!" Edaline's face was so hopeful. So... enthusiastic. But Juline had lived with her curse long enough to know that she couldn't control it.

The best way to protect her kingdom had been to run away, and she couldn't even do that.

(ice coated her veins, spreading through her bloodstream as the ice spun faster and faster)

"We can work this out together!" Edaline extended a hand, and Juline stared at it. She was so tempted to take it; to let Edaline help her, to let the warmth of her hand heat the ice in her veins.

("Catch me, Jules!" "Eda, slow down!")

"I'm dangerous," Juline whispered, turning away as the snow blew faster, stinging her eyes. Or maybe they were tears, burning and burning. "You should leave."

"You can do this, we can fix this! Together!" Edaline pleaded, taking a step forward. The wind picked up, blowing Juline's braid into her face as she felt the ice in her veins crack.

It needed a release. She needed to get it out, get it out-

"I can't!" she twisted splaying her arms in front of her as the ice screamed at her.

(she needed it out out out-)

Ice sprayed from her fingers in a deadly line, and Edaline let out a gasp as it shot toward her. Juline turned just in time to see her sister collapse to her knees, whimpering as the ice latched into her chest, sinking into her heart.
