Nothing Better Than This: FedEx

A/N: Weekly one-shots are hApPeNiNg

This week... drumroll, please...

FEDEX!

Anyway, here we go!

Dex bit his lip anxiously.

What if he didn't show up?

They'd made the plans, but maybe it was all just a prank, and Dex would be left alone, waiting, while Fitz laughed at the idea of the son of a bad match thinking he could have a chance with the Golden Boy of the Vackers--

As soon as the thought crossed his head, a figure glimmered into view, and Fitz appeared a few feet away.

"Sorry I'm late," he apologized. "Biana needed help with something."

Dex nodded speechlessly, his eyes taking in the sight of Fitz with his perfect hair, eyes, and the clothes cut specifically for him. They hugged his body, broadening his shoulders and exposing the muscle in his arms, and the result stole the words from Dex's throat and the breath from his lungs.

"It's-" His voice wobbled a little, and Dex cursed his faulty vocal cords. "It's fine."

Fitz flashed a smile. "Good, I wouldn't want to mess anything up. I've been looking forward to this."

Dex's heart seemed to decide that it had a mind of its own and picked up the pace, practically fluttering. Fitz had looked forward to hanging out with... him?

Fitz sat down on the blue speckled gold blanket, next to Dex but not exactly touching. Dex found himself leaning towards the brunette before he remembered himself and took a polite scooch away, disguising the movement by reaching into the picnic basket next to him. He'd seen the idea in a human movie, and Sophie had provided the details he'd missed.

His mom had provided the main course, but Dex had made some custard bursts himself. They looked pretty good on the outside, he just hoped they tasted good on the inside.

He tapped a little button on the edge of the basket, and it unfolded into a large plate, big enough to share.

Fitz raised his eyebrows. "Did you make that yourself?"

Dex nodded. He hadn't originally planned to have it, but as he was waiting for Fitz he'd gotten so nervous he'd used the supplies he always carried to put it together.

"That's really cool," Fitz smiled.

"Thanks," Dex managed, his words finally coming out smoothly. "I... um, I also made some custard bursts for the... yeah."

Fitz's eyes widened, and he pulled out a tin that had gone unnoticed before. "So did I."

Dex snorted, starting to laugh. "I guess we can try each other's, then," he suggested, taking the tin from Fitz's hand. He placed his own in the other's, feeling heat shoot through him as his fingers brushed Fitz's palm.

They ate the tins, complimenting each other on the exquisite beauty of this delectable scrumptious meal that might as well have come from heaven (okay, maybe it was a little over the top, but it sure tasted like that).

After eating the rest of the meal, they settled back on the blanket, Dex tapping the large plate to make it retract again.

The meadow around them really was beautiful, with soft green grass populated by wildflowers. The sky was blue, dotted with puffy white clouds that reminded Dex of marshmallows.

"What shapes can you see in the clouds?" Fitz asked, resting his head on his hands as he laid back on the blanket.

Dex copied the motion, letting his eyes study the clouds for a good image. "That one looks kinda like Iggy," he said. It really did, with little ears and blobs that looked sorta like wings extending on either side.

Fitz laughed, the sound sending little sparks throughout Dex's body. "What do you see?" The technopath asked.

Fitz stared up for a little bit. "That one," he pointed to a cloud. "It looks like a flower. With all of the petals open."

Dex found the cloud, and it really did look like a flower. Fitz shifted beside him, and Dex turned onto his side to ask him a question, only to find that Fitz was ready facing him.

The intensity in his teal eyes almost made Dex blush, and he willed his face to stay its normal color.

"I'm really enjoying this," Fitz told him. "We haven't had much chance to hang out outside of the friend group."

Dex felt embarrassment wash through him.

Fitz... only saw this as a hangout between friends.

Not a date.

Of course not, why would he? The custard bursts had been a friendly gesture, something to bring to a picnic. All of the things Fitz said... Dex had been looking for something that wasn't there.

He flipped back onto his back, hoping Fitz didn't see the sudden tears burning in his eyes that he quickly blinked away. "I liked this too," he responded, although what he really wanted to say was, "I like you."

But he didn't.

Just like all the other times.

"Good," Fitz probably smiled, but Dex couldn't bring himself to look over at the perfectly put together telepath.

An imparter went off, and Dex sat up to see Fitz talking to someone on it.

He clicked away and turned to Dex apologetically. "I'm sorry, I have to go. Some relatives are coming over tonight and I have to get ready."

Dex nodded. "It's fine, I understand." He did, even if Fitz didn't.

The brunette stood up hesitantly as if he didn't actually want to go. Of course, he was probably looking forward to spending more time with his friend, Dex, who had been jealous of Fitz because he'd had a crush on Sophie. Dex, who liked Sophie, but when their kiss was a fail, realized that he didn't actually like her, and he'd been jealous of the wrong person.

"Bye, then," Dex said, waving his hand like the awkward little boy he was.

Fitz paused, waving back before holding his crystal up to the light.

His eyes were locked with Dex's, and the intensity was back.

Dex couldn't stand it anymore.

He strode up to Fitz, standing only inches away. He hesitated, allowing him to pull away, but he didn't, so Dex moved forward with an uncommon burst of courage, and pressed his lips to his.

He expected Fitz to immediately leap back, but instead, he dropped the bag he'd taken and weaved his hands through Dex's hair, pulling them closer.

Warmth spread through Dex's body, heating up his blood as he twined his arms around Fitz's shoulders and let their lips move together.

Finally, they broke away, panting, and just stared at each other for a second.

"We just..." Dex trailed off.

Fitz nodded, looking just as speechless as him for once.

"Want to do it again?" Fitz evidently wasn't speechless, and the words that spilled out of his mouth sent a tsunami of happiness through Dex's body.

He hadn't been reading too much into Fitz's words.

Their lips collided again, and Dex knew that without a doubt, this was what people always talked about when they expected perfection.

For how could anything ever get any better than this?
