Cracking the Code
Pasha could not believe what he was hearing! In all his years of heading this prison, he had never encountered such a bizarre case. A few minutes ago, he had been appalled by how smartly Detective Shaam had played Saleem right into his hands and right now Inspector Shaam looked as if he had no idea what was happening in this case.
He had rushed into Pasha's office and barked at him to get his men ready to search Saleem and had informed him that Inspector Khalid might be in danger. Repeated searches of Inspector Khalid's cell phone location were showing that the phone had been switched off an hour ago at round about the junction of Hasilpur Road and the highway. The only way that could happen was if Saleem realized that he was being ambushed and was now holding Inspector Khalid hostage.
In the matter of minutes, 10 Police cars sped away through the highway to the last location of Inspector Khalid's cell. Detective Shaam waited anxiously in the passenger seat with Pasha who was driving at 95 kilometers an hour, a speed that was higher than the speed limit for this road. Detective Shaam's leg vibrated unconsciously as his thoughts whirled away with the sound of Police sirens all around him.
He could not let a killer go away like this. He could not let the nation down by failing. But most of all he could not let himself down again. He would put everything that he had to find this man and lead him up to the gallows where people like him belong. People who do not understand the aftermath of a murder as they have never been on the receiving end of one. Inspector Khalid knew... his heart ached every day that he thought about him and he liked that. The pain reminded him of his duty.
"Sir," A policeman in the backseat shouted over the revving of the engine. Detective Shaam looked back at him and saw an opened laptop was placed in his lap, the screen brightness flashing against his skin. "The last location of Inspector Khalid's phone was about a hundred miles off this road into the rocky plain towards our right.
Pasha steered the car where he was directed and followed the location of Inspector Khalid's cell phone. They got out of the car once they had reached and looked around. No signs of any human being every being here was found. Rest of the nine police cars reached and began searching the area.
Detective Shaam scanned the rocky plain under his feet that stretched out on all sides. In the distance, he saw a rectangular piece of metal. He walked towards it and picked Inspector Khalid's phone up. The phone had been treated such that even Detective Shaam felt bad for it; three bullets shot straight through the back that had shot inside out while the front screen was cracked as if a spider's web sewn haphazardly. Shaam looked around at all ten police cars and the land around them curiously and that's when he realized what had happened.
Shaam walked around the group of cars to make sure his theory was true and it seemed as if he had hit the bull's eye! A total of 11 fresh tire tracks led up to this path while only 1 moved away from here. Shaam's eyes followed the tire track of Saleem's car stretching outwards back onto the road.
Shaam turned back and saw everyone staring at him in anticipation. They knew he was the best and that he always had the answers. Shaam twirled the phone in his palm and examined it. The phone had been thrown down, that was for sure, the broken screen explained that- but shot... three times! Why would Saleem shoot the phone thrice? Shaam walked briskly back to the place where he had found the cellphone and knelt down. He rubbed his thumb over the dirt and felt the metal of the three bullets dug into the earth. He pulled one out swiftly and blew the dust off to examine the 9mm bullet. This had been fired from a standard Glock-19 that the Pakistan Police uses, meaning that either Saleem had somehow got hold of Inspector Khalid's gun and had made him so powerless that he could not fight back or Inspector Khalid had shot his cell phone himself. And something told him that the latter sounded more acceptable.
Shaam looked back at the tracks of the car that had driven away opposite to where Khalid had guided him- they weren't heading to Bahawalnagar right now and Khalid was in on this!
Detective Shaam pulled out a polaroid from his breast pocket and examined it. He had finally cracked the code. He knew what S A G B H W L H R meant!
How could Khalid even think that he could outsmart me so easily!
