At first he thought he recognized the girl. Her light brown hair that could also be called dark blonde if you preferred. And her name: Charlie. But that could be a coincidence. Then he noticed the distinctive color of her eyes, blue with just a splash of brown in the right. When she mentioned her cousin Joe, he knew there was no mistaking.

Joe used to be his neighbor long ago, back when he tried to rape and kill a little six year old girl. She got away. He looked at the scar on Charlie's cheek--the scar that he had put there with his rusty old pocket knife back when it was almost new.

Heat spread through his body with a surging emotion. An emotion that he rarely ever felt..at least not so soon. Not without seeing blood. But he had seen her blood--ten long years ago. He tried not to stare at her. People would start to notice. His girlfriend was here--though he wouldn't really call her that. She was just a girl that stuck around and kept his social image up. He kept her around because it was normal for a guy his age to be with girls. It was even more socially acceptable to have a regular girlfriend. People would assume he was normal. Other than that, the girl was quite pointless. She was pathetic and dumb, like most other humans. He didn't love her. He didn't love anything except pain.

Useless as she was, she was surprisingly darn good at making a scene. He'd learned that when he'd come in with scratches on his shoulder once. She was sure he'd cheated on her. Demanded to know who it was with. He told her it didn't matter, because they weren't officially dating and to stop asking questions. He didn't tell her that the girl was dead and under feet of dirt, with a promise never to see the light of day again.

If she noticed him staring at Charlie, she'd probably ruin everything. She'd make a fuss. Kill his buzz--part of which he might be feeling mainly due to the nearness of Charlie. The one that got away. He had another chance. This time, he was going to make the best of it.
