The Plan | August 31st, 1939
"Alright, family meeting!" Mama proclaimed after they had finished a delicious dinner of her homemade radish stew.
Jackie quickly wiped off her mouth with a handkerchief and glanced over at Cole, waiting for his response to the abrupt announcement.
Cole and Jackie exchanged confused glances, but instantly raced to the family room and sat down on their mustard couch. The twins knew that these meetings only occurred when something negative was destined to occur.
The thought of that frightened Jackie and Cole quite a bit, but they were both anxious to hear what it was about.
"Mama, why are we having a meeting?" Jackie questioned, her voice quavering as she spoke.
Mama glanced at Jackie and let out a long sigh," I am quite aware that both of you are cognizant of Germany's declaration of war, but we need to come up with some sort of plan. You realize, children, that they are coming closer as I speak." She looked down for a moment, "We need secret codes and hiding places."
Cole had a smirk on his face like a Cheshire cat. " I know!"
Cole read many books on that type of information, so he knew what to do. Father listened carefully, and so did mama and Jackie.
"Wait, you are saying that we will make a spot in the house where no one would think to look?" Jackie questioned, raising an eyebrow after Cole finished explaining his idea.
"Uh-huh." Cole nodded as he looked at everyone feeling proud for what he just created on his own.
" You have to remember that those Nazi's will literally search everywhere, Cole. They will not stop until they find us."Father added as he scratched his slightly bald head.
Father looked at Mama who had a worried look plastered on her face, but he gave his wife a promising look.
"Don't worry, it will work." Cole ensured while pulling out a piece of scratch paper from the bin and grabbing a fancy feather pen and some ink from the kitchen table. Father, Mama, and Jackie were silent as they watched Cole grab the utensils and then came back over to them.
Finally, after much pleading and assuring, father agreed to build a secret hole below their basement for hiding. He knew it would take him quite a while to complete so he didn't mention when he would be done with the hole.
Next, was creating code words for people and things, for example, one of their code words was, Pigeon, which stood for Nazi's. After they created that code word, they worked on making many others too.
"Alright children, up to bed, now!" Mama commanded after looking at the clock which read, 9:52 p.m.
Cole and Jackie reluctantly obliged to their parents and ran up the stairs yelling at each other about who was going to take their shower first. Once she did not hear them bickering with each other anymore, she looked over at Father.
"Should we tell them after their baths?" She inquired, her hazel eyes looking every direction while Father set his warm hand onto her's.
"I don't want to worry them, Elizabeth." Father explained as he shook his head in sadness. Father bit his chapped lip and gazed deeply into Mama's blue eyes.
People hear about those couples who are so affectionate towards each other, and definitely, Elizabeth and Dylan are one of those couples.
"We cannot keep this hidden forever!" Mama protested as Father pulled her closer to him so they could talk a little quieter.
" I will tell them in the morning, I promise." Father concluded squeezing Mama's hand before releasing his tight grip, "Now, now, where is the hooch?"
Mama laughed and slid her arm between father's, "Dylan, don't you believe it is a tad too late?"
"It's never too late." He winked at Mama.
