#21: First Date

Osamu Dazai and Chuuya Nakahara; otherwise known as Double Black. The two had known each other for a long time, and had their ups and downs, until, without warning, Dazai left.

Chuuya felt abandoned and alone. The night Dazai left he got himself wine and told himself it was because he was relieved to be freed of that bastard, and that was what he believed at the time.

Until he started trying to get in contact with Dazai. Sending lots of worried and chastising texts.

He told himself it was the liquor. That he didn't care about Dazai anymore. But he did. He always did.
And he realized that when, after four years, they met again.

But it wasn't like he could tell Dazai that.

So he waited.

Waited until Dazai did it for him. Which took him long enough.

Dazai never realized how much Chuuya meant to him until they were apart.

It was a shame it had to be learnt the hard way.

Nevertheless, it was learnt.

He wanted to ask Chuuya out on a date. Sure, it was big. But the two of them were finally reforming the bond they once had.

So why not take it to the next level?

The question remained, however: Should he ask extravagantly or more chill?

Chill. Extravagant is what Chuuya expects from Dazai.

Dazai wanted to get a flower for Chuuya, but he remembered that Chuuya hated flowers.

So instead he got him a bottle of his favorite wine and a chocolate rose.

That, surely, was something Chuuya could not pass up on.

So, Dazai approached him, hiding the gifts behind his back.

"Chuuya," he called in a sing-song tone.

Chuuya immediately recognized that voice. He turned around, feigning dread.

"What do you want this time?" he asked impatiently.

"You," Dazai answered with a smirk.

"Excuse me?"

"Here, I got these for you."

Dazai took the bag out from behind his back and handed it to Chuuya. Chuuya took it hesitantly and looked at the contents. Inside was a very bright-colored, unbudded rose, and a bottle of wine.

Strange.

Chuuya noticed the rose was fake after staring at it for a bit.

"It's chocolate," Dazai informed Chuuya, noticing his eyes lingering on the flower. "Dark chocolate."

Dark chocolate was Chuuya's favorite.

The bottle of wine was also Chuuya's favorite.

Dazai must want something.

"What do you want from me, Dazai?" Chuuya asked, his arms sinking.

"I already told you," Dazai answered, "you."

"You're serious?"

"Yes."

"Are you asking me out?"

"I am."

"...are you stupid?"

"Maybe."

Chuuya stared in shock. Dazai. Asking him out? On a date?

Chuuya was relieved. For the longest time he wanted to ask Dazai out, but never let himself. He couldn't show Dazai that he mattered to him so much, especially after him walking out on their partnership for four years.

But feelings were still feelings. Chuuya still cared about Dazai. He still had feelings for him. So something like this is exactly what he--

"Wait," Chuuya began, cutting off his own train of thought. "This isn't some kind of joke, is it? It is. Fuck you."

"Woah, woah!" Dazai interjected. "There is no joke afoot. I am asking you out on a date. That simple. Do you accept?"

Chuuya was silent for a moment. He had to play it cool.

"Fine," he said, "but it's your treat. I have expensive taste."

It was Chuuya's turn to smirk now.

Dazai bowed dramatically. "Gladly," he said. "Shall we meet up this evening, my prince?"

Chuuya kicked Dazai in the shin. "Shut up, you weirdo," he ordered. He turned around and quickly walked away, Dazai's gifts still in his hand.

~

After communicating location (Chuuya's choice) and time (also Chuuya's choice), the date was set in stone.

Chuuya was somewhat off-put by the fact that Dazai bent to each of his orders, but he played along with it.

Maybe for once, he was actually being courteous.

Of course, this was Dazai. There's most certainly some sort of strings attached.

Nevertheless, Chuuya saw it through. He had fallen head over heels for Dazai, even though he wished he hadn't. He could not resist.

Even if this ended up being one big joke.

But it was not. Chuuya entered the restaurant, and sure enough, Dazai was already there, waiting.

"Ah, you came," Dazai said. "I was starting to think you had stood me up."

"Shut up," Chuuya commanded as he took his seat across from Dazai.

Dazai leaned forward and rested his fists on his chin, looking at Chuuya with a look of what one may call admiration. "So, tell me about yourself."

Chuuya rolled his eyes. "Are you seriously doing this?"

"Ne, Chuuya," Dazai replied, "this is a date. Just play along."

Chuuya sighed. He didn't want to have to play Dazai's games, but he put up with it.

"Fine," Chuuya conceded. "My name is Chuuya Nakahara. I'm 22, and I'm from Yokohama."

"What a coincidence, me too!" Dazai replied, exaggerating his enthusiasm. "Minus the name, of course. Tell me more about yourself."

Chuuya leaned in. "Why don't you tell me about yourself first?" he asked. That's right. I can play this game, too, he said with his eyes.

"Oh," Dazai began, slightly disgruntled. He did not expect Chuuya to turn the tables. "Well, I am Osamu Dazai. Like you, I'm 22 and from Yokohama. I work for a Detective Agency."

"What was your previous job?" Chuuya asked, a smirk developing on his face.

"Why does that matter?" Dazai replied in rebuttal.

"I just want to know. This is a date, isn't it?"

Chuuya was good at this game.

"I used to be part of the Mafia," Dazai finally answered.

"Mafia?" Chuuya echoed, feigning surprise. "That sounds like a dangerous and foolish choice."

"Oh yeah?" Dazai argued. "What is your job, Chuu~ya?"

Shit, Chuuya thought. Dazai had turned the tables back around. "I, uh...am currently part of the Mafia myself."

Dazai smirked and crossed one leg over the other, "Mmm, looks like I have a hypocrite on my hands," he teased.

He was humored by Chuuya's seething.

"Why don't you tell me a bit about your life in the Mafia, Chuuya?"

Chuuya sighed again. "Alright, well...I was fairly young when I joined. I was partnered up with this boy around my age."

"Is that so?"

"It is."

"What did you think of him?"

"I didn't really like him. He wasn't very attractive and was super annoying. Plus he was a flight risk, with his suicidal nature. I was relieved when he quit."

Dazai's head hit the table. When he lifted it up slightly he said, in a defeated tone, "Come on, why did you have to ruin it?"

"I can have my fun too, aibou," Chuuya answered. "Now, when is our damned waiter going to get here?"

~

"After you," Dazai said as he opened the front door to Chuuya's flat and ushered him inside.

"Please, you're too kind," Chuuya replied mockingly as he entered and threw himself on his couch. His bag of gifts was still on the table. Dazai followed behind him.

"Shall I get two glasses?" he asked.

"Then what'll you drink?" Chuuya teased.

Dazai flashed a scowl at him.

"Come on, you can dish it out, but you can't take it?"

Dazai sighed and grabbed two glasses. He was not a fan of wine. Sake and whiskey were more his style.

But wine was what they had, so wine they shall drink.

Dazai reached into the bag and took out the bottle. He popped off the cork and poured wine into both glasses.

Dazai lifted his glass. "Shall we toast?" he suggested.

"To a painful and shitty evening," Chuuya added.

Dazai laughed, and they toasted their glasses.

"Come now, Chuuya, you have to admit that you had a good time, right?"

Chuuya exhaled heavily as he took the chocolate rose from the bag. "Yes, I'll admit," he said quietly, "this was very nice. Good food...and good company."

"Really?" Dazai inquired, genuinely surprised.

"I'm just as shocked as you," Chuuya continued. "I didn't think that a date with you would be very fun. I prepared myself to hate it, actually. The only thing I hate right now is that I actually enjoyed it."

"Why do you hate that?"

"Because it's you who I was on a date with."

Dazai just stared into space after that. Chuuya knew Dazai didn't need to ask why. His actions did that for him.

"I spent four years trying to get over you. I never did succeed in that. You've lived rent-free in my brain since we met. I thought you'd never love me. I thought that once you left me I'd finally be able to kick you the fuck out. But I couldn't get you out of my head, no matter how much I tried. I could never get over you."

Dazai leaned forward and kissed Chuuya on the cheek. "Well, now you don't have to," he said with not a smirk, but a warm smile.

Chuuya touched his face where Dazai had kissed him, which caused Dazai to giggle a little.

It was a cute little laugh.

Why did it have to be cute?

Chuuya immediately turned away from Dazai and unwrapped the chocolate rose.

"Aww, is little Chuuya embarrassed?" Dazai teased.

"Shut up," Chuuya ordered as he bit into the flower.

It was delicious. It must have been freshly made and had just finished cooling when it was decoratively wrapped.

"Enjoying your treat there, aibou?" Dazai asked rhetorically, smiling at him.

"Very much so," Chuuya answered.

"May I try some?" Dazai asked.

Chuuya just stared at him.

"You can have my wine. I haven't touched it."

"Fine." Chuuya held the chocolate rose out in front of Dazai. "Only take a small bite, asshole."

Dazai lightly pushed Chuuya's hand out of the way and instead pressed his lips to his.

The kiss would have lasted longer if Chuuya hadn't broken away so soon.

"Wh-what the hell are you doing??" Chuuya exclaimed.

"Just tasting your chocolate," Dazai answered, licking his lips.

"Couldn't you have just, y'know, actually bit into the fuckin' chocolate itself?!"

"I could have, but where's the fun in that?"

Chuuya put the rose down and put one hand to his face, trying to regain his composure.

"Sweet…" Dazai mumbled.

"You mean the chocolate?" Chuuya asked rhetorically.

Dazai smiled again and looked away. "Sure, let's go with that."

~

"Hey, Dazai," Chuuya stuttered, his hands behind his back.

Dazai turned around and looked at his red-faced partner.

"It's not like I enjoyed our date last night, or anything..." he began. He took his arms out from behind his back and handed a rose to Dazai.

Roses were Dazai's favorite flower.

"...but, would you be willing to accompany me on another one?"

Dazai stared for a moment, then took the flower from Chuuya's hand. He slipped his hand under Chuuya's chin and tilted his head up, planting a kiss on his forehead.

"I'd be delighted to, aibou."
