happy birthday kuroo
The bitter cold air bit at Kuroo's face, and he hunched his shoulders and pulled his collar up. He had quite the uneventful day at work, sitting behind a counter reading comic books off the shelf of the store. He had made a few good friends, but none were more than surface deep. They enjoyed small talk and gossiped but never exactly shared personal things, speaking in their classes and going to lunch or a bar on occasion.
He facetimed Bokuto every night, and often saw Akaashi in the background cooking or cleaning or working on something. Sometimes he'd even show his face and speak a little, smiling warmly as he greeted Kuroo. He shared a cozy apartment with Kenma, and he kept in contact with Yaku, meeting for coffee here and there. He met with the Nekoma team often as well, and visited the high school where Lev still attended and assisted in the training of newbies. He was truly excited to see his kohai's progressing more and more, and this year they made it to Nationals, and will be playing there soon against Karasuno.
The sun dipped below the skyline of skyscrapers, the temperature joining as a bitter wind picked up, scattering leaves and wrappers alike. The wind also seemed to pick up his pace, for he definitely didn't want to be anywhere near the cold. He aimed to get home before the light disappeared.
His birthday had been just another day for the last two years, his coworker, Sami, brought him a small cake which they shared over small talk about the manga and newly aired anime "Touken Ranbu." He had no plans, other than treating himself to mackerel, for this birthday either. Kenma was out of town, and Yaku worked late. Bokuto and Akaashi were simply out of the question. This night, this birthday, he would spend alone.
Sure, Kuroo found it a bit depressing how his first year or so in college had gone. Everyone had always spoke about how exciting it was, but Kuroo found the parties a bit disgusting and the idea of being an adult quite dreary. He planned on being a forensic psychiatrist and criminal profiler for the police department or FBI, so when he finally settled he knew life would pick up.
He approached his apartment building, and slipped in the door quickly. He kept his frosty fingers shoved in his pockets until he approached the elevator, pressing the button for up. He stepped in, riding up to his floor. He fumbled in his pocket for the icy keys as he unlocked his door.
Without turning on the light, he shrugged off his winter coats and shoes and scarf, tossing them over the couch haphazardly, before flicking on the light.
He glanced over into the living room, streamers and balloons everywhere. Akaashi, Bokuto, Lev, Yaku, and Kenma all stood with grins on their faces as Kuroo looked back to the kitchen nonchalantly.
Yet, after a split second, Kuroo's head snapped back. "What the fuck?!"
"Hey, Hey, Hey! happy birthday old man!" Bokuto yelled, pulling the string on a confetti canon. Akaashi shook his head.
"I told you not to shoot that off, Bokuto-san, because you will clean it up." He rolled his eyes. "Happy birthday, Kuroo." He said softly, smiling an bowing his head.
"I-... How did you all get here?" He questioned. "Not that i'm like, angry, but-?"
"I got back this morning, even though I told you I'd be here tomorrow morning. I flew in Akaashi and Bokuto as a surprise, and Yaku lied about working. Lev just kinda showed up." Kenma smirked. Before Lev could object, Bokuto stole the spotlight once more.
"Now, now, Kuroo. You need to understand that being an adult is incredibly taxing and requires an incredible amount of responsibility-" Bokuto spoke as he threw his arm over Kuroo's shoulder, animatedly using his hands before Kuroo cut in slyly.
"Bokuto, you are literally like two months older than me."
Akaashi sighed deeply and audibly. "You both are 20 years old and still act like you're 12."
"Tell me, Kuroo-san, Bokuto-san, are those gray hairs I see?" Lev teased, his eyes flaring in amusement as both of the boys turned to each other and began patting at each other's heads.
"Bokuto-san, baka..." Kenma muttered, and Yaku elbowed Lev.
"Bokuto, all your hair is grey." Akaashi muttered, and Kuroo and Bokuto froze and snatched their hands back.
Yaku shook his head, and glanced to Kenma, sharing a look.
"Alright, alright, now it's time for pizza and cake." Yaku clapped his hands together, and he and Akaashi began to herd the other boys towards the kitchen and dining room.
"I get the piece with the most frosting!!" Lev cried out, pushing through.
"Ehh??" Kuroo's nose scrunched. "The hell you think you're doing? I'm getting the piece with the most frosting."
"Oh ho ho? What do you guys think you're doing? I'm the one getting the piece with the most frosting." Bokuto jumped about, slipping to the front.
"But I'm the birthday boy!"
"Bokuto, Lev! Kuroo gets whatever the fuck he wants first because it is his birthday." Yaku scolded, as Akaashi pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance.
They shifted about, opening the boxes of pizza.
"How many did you buy, Kenma?" Kuroo gasped a bit. There was literally a box for every person there, and then some.
"One for each, the rest we live off of because neither of us can cook for shit." He shrugged, and Kuroo pursed his lips and nodded his head in an agreeable manner.
"Let's fuckin' dig in!" Bokuto yelled, snatching a box off the top.
"Kenma said there's one for each, Bokuto. So, that means there's probably different toppings." Akaashi said, plucking the box from his friend's fingers and putting it back in the stack.
"I'll distribute for you Kenma, go sit and play your new game. You're probably tired after decorating." Yaku said patting Kenma on the shoulder, who nodded and turned to join the boisterous discussion at the table. "Akaashi? Would you grab me the plates and such?"
Akaashi flashed a ghost of a smile and complied to the request wordlessly.
"Kuroo, you wanted the Hawaiian pizza?" Yaku called, and Kuroo ran up. He passed it off, and checked the next. "Is this plain cheese for you Akaashi?"
"Yeah, just put it off to the side."
"Got it..." Yaku said, shifting through and calling out names and their corresponding toppings, before taking his own and moving into the kitchen with Akaashi.
They chatted simply, talking about their shitty part time jobs and shitty coworkers that they pretended to like, and Lev spoke about a kohai that was a handful. They asked Kenma about his internship and Bokuto about being a coach. Akaashi's career also started to take off, earlier than any of them expected. He's published a few research papers in the field of zoology.
After they each finished their pizza, Yaku stood. "I'll get the cake!" He disappeared back in the kitchen, and Keiji turned out the lights. When Yaku returned, the cake had candles lit and they began singing (extremely offkey).
Yaku carefully carried the cake and placed it in front of the grinning Kuroo.
"...Happy birthday to you!!" They cheered as they clapping
"I guess I'll make a wish..." Kuroo blew out the candles with a huff.
Bokuto shifted behind his chair, patting his back as Lev smirked. "Kuroo, I bet Akaashi put a lot of love into the cake. It probably smells amazing. He used a special blueberry frosting just for youu..." He cooed. "But it's very faint, Kuroo, you have to get real close to smell it."
Kuroo eyed him, before leaning forward slowly to smell it.
However, Bokuto pushed his face into the frosting, screaming, "happy birthday!" before pulling his hands back, and sprinting out of the room.
Kuroo lifted his head slowly, face covered in blue and white buttercream frosting and vanilla cake. He stood slowly.
"I'm going to fuckin kill you!" He yelled, leaving the others hysterically laughing.
