"Honestly, you guys, ouija boards dontwork." Kageyama snapped, crossing his arms.
It was the night of halloween, and the boys decided against going trick o treating against the will of the others. Oikawa had nearly thrown a fit after strutting in, dressed and ready for a 'fabulous' halloween. Bokuto had already dragged out his ancient board, the dust clinging to the cheap cardboard cover, and they opted to stay.
"Bokuto-san, you look like an idiot." Akaashi placed his chin in his hand, quirking an eyebrow. His eyes followed Bokuto, who held the planchette up to his left eye, sprinting back and forth around the room claiming he could see shadows.
"Y'Know, Bokuto, the shadows you're seeing are definitely not spirits." Kuroo laughed. "They're literally just normal shadows."
Bokuto whipped his head around, his owl like eye magnified in the murky glass. "Shh, I think I heard a ghost..." Kuroo burst out laughing, smacking his forehead with his palm.
"Bokuto-chan, i think i did too..." Terushima said, faking suspicion as he looked around slowly. He grinned and stuck out his tongue to Kageyama, he looked away as he rolled his eyes. His tongue ring, which stood out on his tongue, was changed to a pumpkin piercing for the season.
"Really?!"
"No." Akaashi and Kageyama said simultaneously.
"Pfft, whatever. Just watch, we'll show you it works." Bokuto huffed, gesturing to Kuroo and Terushima, who placed their hands on the board with him.
"You ready?" Kuroo asked, and Teru nodded and Bokuto did too. "Come spirits, in the air, and speak with us if you dare. In a place where no life survives, in a place evil thrives. Now, I call you to the board, to talk to us through this glass. Now, for the living shall pass." His voice deepened, solemn and slow. He enunciated each word, and he took on a brand new air.
Kageyama felt a small shiver pass through him, and he glanced to Akaashi anxiously. Akaashi stared off into space, his expression frozen in an uninterested way. Kuroo kept on speaking as they circled the board with the planchette three times counter clock wise.
"Spirits... Speak to me." He said, and they dragged the piece to the center. "Is anybody there?"
Bokuto let out a long sigh, as if he was holding his breath, and the three stared intently at the board. Kageyama, too, was captivated by the glass for a moment due to the hypnotic way the ritual began.
After a few moments, Terushima's shoulders relaxed and slumped forward. "Huh. I thought something would've happened by now?"
"No, nothing would've happened by now because it isn't real-" Akaashi lifted his head from his palm and rolled his hand out palm up just as the piece skittered to yes.
Kageyama's eyes widened, Kuroo grinned, and Bokuto gasped as Terushima whistled lowly. "Well shit. Spoke a tad bit too soon." He muttered, his eyes fixed on the board.
"W-Well, what's your name?" Bokuto stuttered.
"H-I-S-A-O..." Kageyama spelt the letters out, before covering his mouth and muffling his hysterical laughing.
"Ironic name..." Kuroo bit back his smile.
Bokuto gave them hard glares, before refocusing on the board. "How old were you when you died?"
"One... Seven... Seventeen?" Kuroo read, and the piece slid to 'yes.'
"Seems legit." Terushima said, nodding his head, and Akaashi rolled his eyes.
"How did it die?" Akaashi asked, his voice monotone.
"What he said..." Bokuto mumbled, a bit disheartened by Akaashi's attitude.
"M-U-R-D-E-R-... E-Ehh? You've gotta be fucking shitting me." Kageyama groaned. "Who's pushing it? There's no way."
"My money's on Kuroo. He's the quietest one, and probably the best with stupid puns like that." Akaashi shot in.
"Hey! I'm just nervous!" Kuroo called back in defense.
"Sure you are..." Akaashi sneered.
Bokuto hushed them, his eyes quite serious. "I understand that you guys think this is a game. But it's not. Did you not notice all the candles went out?" He asked quietly.
Akaashi's amused expression wiped away. "No..."
"Exactly. Now, be more specific, Hisao-san. How did they kill you?"
The planchette stood still a moment, before slowly spelling out a new word. "Knife?" Terushima asked, and the piece moved to yes to confirm. "Where did you die?"
Once again, the planchette found itself in a delay. They all watched in anticipation, and even Akaashi stayed silent and was drawn to observe.
"I think he's gone..." Kageyama crossed his arms and leaned against the table, craning his neck to watch.
"Just say 'goodbye' already... I'm starting to get creeped out." Akaashi said, his eyes darting about.
Suddenly, the glass began to vibrate beneath their fingers, before moving to the letter H.
"Bokuto-san... We should say goodbye. Seriously." Terushima supported Akaashi, his eyes flicking from the board and about the room. His voice wavered as the piece shifted to the letter E.
"Um, yeah... Really though... I don't think we're gonna like this." Kageyama said anxiously.
"We can't just interrupt him." Bokuto said, his eyes watching the planchette go to the letter R.
"Bro..."
The piece moved to the letter E once more, then simply slid back to the middle.
They didn't say a word, they just stared at each other, their eyes moving between one another, unsure of what to do. Akaashi, who's face always stayed the same, had his eyebrows pinched together and terrified eyes.
"Say it-..." Keiji ventured to say, but suddenly, the dim lights flickered, as lightening flared the room to life, casting horrific shadows up and down the walls.
"Fuck!" Kageyama cringed, and Terushima yanked his hands right off, scrambling backwards on the ground.
"Terushima, you fucking jerk!" Bokuto screamed.
"Shit shit shit, now look what you've done!" Kuroo yelled.
"J-Just say goodbye already." He shuddered.
They moved the piece to the bottom, everyone in the room, even those who didn't touch the board at all, said "Goodbye."
"And good riddance," Akaashi hissed, before turning and stomping out the room.
For a while, no one spoke at all, and not a sound braced the room except the wailing of the wind. Kageyama pursed his lips and uncrossed his arms. He pushed off the table, and turned.
"I'm gonna check on him. You guys really spooked him." Kageyama said, his voice cracking. He kept his back to them and left the room.
A few seconds passed before Terushima spoke. "So... Who's putting it away?"
"Nose-goes," Kuroo laughed, tapping his nose with his index finger, and Teru and Bokuto's hands shot up as well.
"I won!" Bokuto laughed, and Terushima growled.
"It's your fucking board!"
"Yeah, but i won! Nah, nah, nuh nah-nah!" Bokuto teased, laughing and mocking the way Teru always stuck his tongue out.
"Why, you little-..." Terushima growled, tackling Bokuto to the ground.
"Guys! Guys!" Kuroo snapped. They froze, looking to Kuroo who held the piece in both hands in front of his face. "We ought to check for spirits, since Teru-chan took his hands off the board and probably opened a portal to hell..."
"E-Ehh?!"
Kuroo giggled, and winking at them. "Nyah, just kidding. But it won't hurt to check, if ya know what I mean..." He said, before staring through the glass and searching around. He had a grin on his face as he searched, but it was washed away immediately when his eyes found a figure.
It was a tall beast, his hair long and sticking to his shadowed face, and covered his body. He lifted a human like hand toward Kuroo, who screamed like a little girl and sprinted out of the front door. Terushima and Bokuto laughed, facing the door. They hadn't turned around.
"He must've just spooked himself-..." Bokuto said, turning his head. However, he stopped himself from speaking and Terushima stared up in awe. A long, drawn out groan came from the monster.
"Son of a bitch!" Terushima shouted, tripping over himself as he ran toward the door as well.
"Big Foot is real!" Bokuto cried out, before slamming the door behind him.
The monster simply stood, a bemused grunt leaving his mask. He hobbled forward, his words muffled. He turned to see Tanaka walking up eating a candy apple.
"Oh, shoot, Asahi are you stuck? Why didn't they help you?" He asked, shaking his head as he reached up. He pulled the Chubaca mask off of Asahi, who gasped like a fish out of water.
"Oh, thank you Tanaka. And i think i might've just scared them a bit."
Nishinoya peaked his head around the corner. "Well," He chomped into a candy bar. "More for us. Maybe you should scare away Kageyama and Akaashi too." He grinned.
