Freckles

Yamaguchi hates his freckles. He wakes up every morning and scrubs at his cheeks until they are raw and red, as if he could tear them away. He wished his skin resembled a porcelain dolls, free of blemishes and marks. When he was thirteen, he let a friend of his attempt to cover them with foundation, but it didn't work at all and he only felt even more embarrassed than before.

"Tadashi, stop staring at yourself in the damn mirror! You're pretty, I understand, but I need to get ready for school, too!" His sister bellowed, banging on the door repeatedly until he yanked the door open.

He passed by her, avoiding contact so he didn't anger her further, and he sprinted up the stairs. He opened the door to his room, and leaned around his door, pulling his black gakuran on over his white collared shirt. Snatching up is bag and jogging down the stairs, he began to button as he went down. Yamaguchi, being a clumsy child, didn't pay attention to the last step and stumbled forward, skidding a bit due to the lack of friction his socks caused.

He quickly recovered though, and groaned before trudging into his kitchen.

His mother smiled kindly. "Ohayou, sweetheart, here's your bento box, and here's a mikan for your walk..." She said hurriedly, returning to her cooking.

"Alright, I'll see you later." He turned to walk to the door, waving briefly. He stepped into his shoes and jumped, skipping the two steps before him and giggling at his own childishness.

He hummed lightly, momentarily forgetting his blight of freckles as he pealed his yummy mikan, and nibbled each slice as he made his way to school. About halfway there, his street merged with another, and Tsukishima joined him, stealing a piece right from Yama's fingers and popping it in his mouth.

Yamaguchi frowned, and ate another piece as Tsukki shoved his hands into his pockets. "You're early. Did Kimi chase you out the damn bathroom?" He asked, his voice monotone.

Yamaguchi's eyes widened as he chewed, and he averted his eyes before laughing nervously. "Whaddaya mean, Tsukki-kun?"

"Don't play dumb, you're always in the bathroom for outrageously long amounts of time. Sometimes I wonder what in the hell you're doing." He grinned.

Yamaguchi shook his head. "I just take my time..." He muttered, blushing furiously.

The day went by almost uneventfully, and Yamaguchi only went to the bathroom to rub his face twice. Most days, he'd catch his reflection in the glass windows or on a blank computer screen, and heart would drop. His anxiety was mostly unfounded, but occasionally someone would pick on him unrelentingly, or call him freckles.

In his third period, he often hid his face in the crook of his elbow in order to avoid the class ass, Goro. The brute would tease and poke and prod at people to the point of fury, and it was more because he was incessant and half the time his jokes didn't even make any sense.

The sole person he always managed to strike a chord with was Yamaguchi, and Goro always took advantage over the poor little guy's over sensitivity. That day, Yamaguchi successfully removed himself from the majority and hid in the back of the classroom near the door, so that when the bell rang, he could run to hide behind Tsukishima.

Goro and his cronies strolled to the back, and Yama lifted his head slowly, dreading the silly insults about to be given.

"Ne, Freckles, what are you doing? Why do you always hide your face?" He asked, feigning innocent curiosity, before his voice became venomous. "Is it because you're worried about breaking the windows with your face? Do your freckles offend your mom?"

Yamaguchi sat back a bit, opening his mouth as his eyes glassed over and burned. Goro's friends burst into laughter, and the bell rang. Yamaguchi grabbed his bag and pencil, getting out of the classroom before anyone had processed the noise.

He ran and ran down the halls towards the cafeteria and straight into the back of a tall blonde who grumbled something beneath his breath before turning around to face Yamaguchi as he spluttered out apologies. It was Tsukki. Yamaguchi inwardly sighed in relief as he smiled up at his friend.

"I'm absolutely starved, Tsukki-kun, are you ready for the trek up those damned stairs-..." He said quickly, pushing passed Tsukishima, who spun around and gripped his wrist tightly.

Without saying a word, Tsukishima dragged Yamaguchi into the nearest bathroom, looming over him. "Tsukki-kun... What's wrong?"

Tsukishima blinked, then looked away shyly, before regaining his apparently lost resolve. "That's what I was going to ask you..." He said, watching Yamaguchi closely.

Yama face twisted for a millisecond, his eyes widened and lip quivered, before he squeezed them and pasted a broad smile on his face. "What? What're you even talking about, Tsukki-kun? I'm totally fine!" He beamed.

Tsukishima's eyebrows drew together, a frown forming on his lips. He seemed almost... concerned? Yet, all in a blur, Tsukishima reached out and pulled Yama into his arms, squeezing tightly and resting his chin on his head.

"I'm not good at this... consoling people... But you should know you can cry around me... I won't tease you..." He whispered into Yama's hair, pulling him closer.

Yamaguchi couldn't even process what just happened at first. "T-Tsukki... -kun..." His voice quaked, and his lip quivered. Tears gushed out of his eyes and cascaded down his cheeks instantly, a soft sob escaping his throat. He clutched at Tsukishima's shirt burying his face into his shoulder as he cried.

Tsukishima stroked his hair patiently, waiting for the water works to shut off, and they did eventually. Yamaguchi's sobs turned into hiccups and deep breathing as he fell silent. He pushed off Tsukki's chest and smiled faintly up at him.

"I'm sorry... I didn't mean to waste your time..." Yama murmured.

Tsukki shook his head, and snorted. "If you were wasting my time, I would've left the room. This matters to me. I want to know what got you so damn worked up, you hardly ever cry like this."

"Oh, Tsukki-kun, I'm okay. Don't worry about it."

"Tadashi, look at me you silly bastard. Clearly something happened. Tell me. Now." He demanded, gripping Yamaguchi's shoulders.

Yama's eyes widened as Tsukishima used his name. Tsukki only used his name when he was super fucking serious. Yamaguchi took a deep breath in as his eyes became bleary once more. "My face!" He cried out before shoving his face in his hands. "I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!"

"Your face...? What? Your fae is fine what is wrong with-..."

"I hate my face Tsukki-kun, my freckles. I am so ugly." He whimpered, his shoulders shaking as waves of weeps washed over him.

"For fuck sakes, Tadashi, you're face is not ugly. Your freckles are not ugly. You are not ugly. You may be stupid, and way to naïve, but ugly is absolutely not an option." Tsukishima ranted, grabbing Yamaguchi's wrists, yanking them away from his tear streaked face. "You are so obliviously adorable, it doesn't even make sense to me. Your freckles are unique and actually bring out your eyes, which is confusing and kind of unfair. Your smile literally is so bright and contagious, you've made me smile. Your face, and your freckles make me, Tsukishima Kei, extremely happy."

At the end of his rant, Tsukishima's lips were pursed, eyes narrowed, and eyebrows knitted together in bemused frustration. He shook Yama as he spoke, and unwittingly brought them nose to nose.

He breathed heavily through his nose, and Yamaguchi stared with his jaw dropped. "Tsukki-kun... I didn't know you felt so strongly..." He said delicately.

Tsukishima blinked a few times, as if waking up from a dream, and leaned back coolly. He turned his head, releasing Yamaguchi, his face pink. "Y-Yeah? Well, I do."

Yamaguchi radiated joy as he giggled and wrapped his arms around Tsukki's waist. "Thank you, Kei. It makes me very lucky, having a guy like you..." He murmured, causing Tsukishima to stammer.

"Sh-Shut up, Tadashi..." He acted annoyed, and after huffing he embraced Yamaguchi.

Since that notorious day, the two blubbering morons referred to each other by their names, without a second thought.
