Promises (Reiner x Reader)

-For WinnieHeichou-

"Please! Someone help!" I heard a voice say- it was a woman pleading for someone's aid as she was being crushed by the large debris of the houses flying around.

I immediately launched my 3DMG towards the building that she laid under and saw that she had no chance of walking and escaping whatsoever, but I couldn't ever tell her that. Her son was beside her, helplessly crying.

"Ma'am are you alright? Please calm down I will help you." I reassured her, even though I, myself was unsure that I could help her.

"Just please take my son somewhere safe! Hurry!" tears started streaming down her eyes. I couldn't look at her. I couldn't bear to see another mother's eyes fill up with tears of agony.

"What about you? You're going to be-"

A loud thump on the ground interrupted, prompting my ever-so-inconvenient anxiety to go haywire.

The mother panicked.

I didn't know what to do, I had to accept that I couldn't save both of them.

"Please!" She begged. I finally gave in and took the son into my arms.

"Alright ma'am." I almost started to cry, but I didn't. I couldn't show my unreliability and weakness infront of the woman who entrusted her son's life to me.

"Thank you, please protect him." she choked her tears and I nodded. The titan was running closer in the distance. I launched my gear up to the building and met the rest of my team. As we grew distant from the mother, the child cried even louder calling out to her.

I reached the top of the building and met with my team who had also just landed onto the roof.

"(y/n)! Where have you been?" Reiner approached me and saw the child who was now standing beside me, holding my hand and crying.

"I saw his mother asking for help, and she told me to take her son," I gripped onto the child's hand. "I don't know what to do."

"We have to go," he said. "We have to keep him safe. I'll carry him for you on our way back. We'll decide what to do when we get back." he carried the child who was still gripping onto my hand.

"Don't worry, I'll be behind you all the way. Just hold tight to him." I reassured the kid and he nodded, rubbing his tearful eyes.

We made our way back over the wall, trying to avoid as many casualties as we could. I was worried. If a titan did approach us, I'm responsible for their lives. Luckily for our team, we had a clear run through. The child had stopped crying somewhere during our travel- probably he was too distracted with the feeling of flying through the air.

When we finally landed on the wall, we immediately went over to Dot Pixis.

---

"Hey, (y/n), how's the kid?" Reiner asked, walking over to my table in the mess hall.

"He's alright, he won't talk that much though." I told him as I looked at the child sitting beside me; whose name I later found out was Isaac.

"I can't believe they allowed you to take care of him." He sat infront of me and ate his bread.

"I can't either; Pixis didn't even put up an argument against it. But I guess it's because he doesn't have a place to live, and as much as he doesn't talk, he clings on to me like I'm his mother, so there's really no choice. But I don't mind." I started playing with my food.

"If it's hard for you, I'll help you take care of him. Besides, it's not easy to raise a child on your own." I looked at him. It was true, I needed the help. I didn't know how to raise this child.

"Y-yeah sure, thanks, Reiner." I smiled at him.

"Hey, what's your name?" He asked Isaac, he recoiled and hid under my arm. "Don't you remember me? I was the one who was flying with you," Reiner said, "I want to be friends" I smiled at the child.

"It's okay, tell him."

The child faced him but still hid under my arm. "It's Isaac." He murmured.

"Hey, Isaac. My name's Reiner. I hope we become good friends. (y/n) here and I will take care of you. If you need anything, we're here for you." He reached out his hand to the Isaac and Isaac did the same to shake it.

I slightly blushed and faced Isaac. This was a side of Reiner that I haven't witnessed. I could not have chosen a better person to help me with him.

"How old are you, Isaac?" He continued.

"5." Isaac finally went back to eating his food.

"5? Oh man, you're grown up already," He replied and the kid smiled at him. "Don't worry, we promise to take good care of you, right, (y/n)?" He and Isaac both turned to me.

"Yes I promise, don't worry Isaac." I smiled back at him and ran my hand on his head. "Okay, it's time to finish up your food, alright?" I asked Isaac and he nodded.

After dinner, Isaac and I went to my room and talked. He told me all about his parents and how he lost his father five years ago in the breach of wall Maria. I felt so bad, he had no one anymore and he was just a child. I reassured him that I would be there for him, and fill in the shoes of his mother.

"I'm sorry, you're going to have to sleep on my bed." I scratched my head, I could just sleep beside him, I am the one taking care of him anyway.

"It's fine, I shared a bed with my parents sometimes." I saw him look down onto the floor, tears welling up in his eyes.

I sunk down to his level and gave him a hug. "It's okay Isaac, it's okay." He started crying.

After we had all things settled, we both slept. The other trainees who were my roommates tried talking to him but he refused to reply to any of them.

I woke up the next morning with no Isaac beside me. I panicked and got up from my bed. Could he have ran away?

I dressed quickly and looked everywhere until I went into the mess hall.

Both Reiner and Isaac sat beside each other eating breakfast and casually talking. How cute.

"Hey," I sat infront of them.

"Hi," Reiner replied, "I took Isaac earlier, I was going to ask you first but I figured you were probably exhausted from yesterday. Sorry if that scared you or anything."

"It's alright, thank you." I smiled and rested my head on my hand. "How are you? Did you have a good sleep?" I asked Isaac.

"Mhm," he nodded, playing with his food.

"That's good." I told him. "I'll be right back, I'm going to get my food." I walked away and saw people walking into the mess hall.

After our breakfast we were called to the wall, and I had to leave Isaac in the hands of the people who stayed in the infirmary and occupied his time with reading books. It was difficult to convince him at first, but he eventually stayed.

Today was the day that we took back wall Rose through Eren. Our way to take back the wall was with a titan.

I was told to help back up the elite troops along with 5 other trainees that were most likely going to rank just incase something went wrong. And to my luck, something bad did happen. Eren had gone out of control and just attacked Mikasa. It was now my duty to get rid of the titans that Eren might have lured in during the process of plugging the wall in.

There were about three titans surrounding the group, two of which were killed by the others and I was left alone with the last titan.

I had to do this, even if it meant losing my own life. I was willing to help humanity with taking this wall back.

The titan was slowly approaching Eren onto the left side. I launched my gear towards the building nearest the titan and ran behind it on top of the roof. I hooked onto the nape of the titan's neck and readied my blades but I was far too slow and the titan had turned around and grabbed me.

I was being squeezed by the hands of the titan, my arms couldn't move. I could taste the blood in my mouth; the disgusting taste of copper.

I started crying, "I'm sorry Isaac, I'm so sorry."

"(y/n)!" The rest of my team called out to me. My vision was blurry and I couldn't tell who it was.

"(y/n), don't worry, we're here for you!" It was Sasha.

The next thing I knew I was laid on the ground, possibly on top of the wall. Did we succeed? I couldn't know. I was conscious but I just didn't have the energy to open my eyes. Everything hurt. I heard everyone talking around me and others screaming, probably mourning the loss of the other cadets.

"(y/n), Please don't die on me," It was Reiner. "You promised me and Isaac, you promised us, god damn it!" He pounded on the ground beside me, holding back his tears, but I could hear it in his voice.

"Reiner, please," Bertolt pleaded him.

"We should take her to the infirmary immediately." It sounded like Sasha.

And it was all I could hear before I passed out once again.

I woke up to realize that I was in the infirmary with Isaac sleeping beside me, tucking in his small body. It was morning once again. I ran my hand on his head, he must have been petrified to see me in such a state.

I sat up from my bed, all the pain shot up on my ribs. "Ow ow ow ow," I let out a quiet hiss.

I saw Reiner on the chair beside my bed.

"Don't strain yourself," he rose from his chair and helped me up, grasping onto his sleeves.

"Sorry." I mumbled, and looked down as he was helping me balance myself. He flinched.

"Why?" he asked me.

"I promised something and almost broke it. Sorry." If I hadn't been saved, I would have also broken my promise to Isaac's mother. I couldn't let him live through hell once again. I was the only person he trusted.

"Don't be sorry. We're just thankful you're still here." He approached to hug me and pulled back, remembering that my injuries made me fragile. Nonetheless, I pulled on his sleeves and hugged him, sinking my face into his chest. He put his hands on my back lightly.

"Please don't do that again." He said.

"mhm." I pulled back.

"You promise?"

"Yes, I promise."
