The Way I Feel
*Omnipotent PoV*
Benvolio's apple cider tasted slightly of coffee grounds, and the wind nipped at his cheeks in such a way that it was just a hair too frosty to be entirely enjoyable. The paved streets on which he walked were entirely too crowded, and he had to talk a bit louder than he would have liked in order to be heard by the mass of people around him.
Nonetheless, he was perfectly content to stroll the streets with his boyfriend, and pretend to ignore the eyes of those whose gazes lingered a moment too long on their entwined hands, even if he was wearing the most ridiculous pair of antlers upon his head and his ears were colder than they'd ever been.
Benvolio's mind wandered, as it often does, to Mercutio. His beautiful boyfriend, the guy he was still entirely awestruck by. Mercutio could have chosen anyone in the world to be with, (he certainly was handsome enough) but instead he chose Benvolio.
Before long, Benvolio was pulled from his thoughts by Mercutio. He nudged Ben, jerking his head towards one of the shops across the street. Benvolio's friends had disappeared, drawn by the enticement of free cookies and sales, leaving the pair alone.
"Do you think they'll realize we've gone on without them?" Mercutio asked, an endearing half-smile gracing his cheeks.
"Probably not."
"Perfect."
Then Mercutio was pulling Ben behind him, and the buzz of the festivities faded into the background.
"Where are we going?" Benvolio questioned, glancing around. He knew his town like the back of his hand, and the way they were going would lead them towards the west end of town.
"You'll see soon enough," Mercutio promised, smiling at Benvolio cheekily.
Damn that smile. Benvolio thought, and then, almost as an afterthought, leaned forwards to kiss Mercutio's cheek.
"If you're bringing me to the fucking murder alleyway, I will break your fingers," Benvolio said jokingly.
"Christ, Ben, no. If I brought you to an alley, that wouldn't be the reason."
"Mercutio!"
"I'm kidding!"
"Look, we're here," Mercutio announced, gesturing dramatically at the unassuming brick building in front of them.
Benvolio stepped forward and pushed open the door questioningly, and was greeted by a wave of small animals.
A frazzled receptionist came jogging over, scooping up the puppies and depositing them into a pen.
"Hi, welcome to the Humane Society, sorry about the puppies! We don't get a lot of visitors, being this far away from the center of town," she explained, tucking a stray strand of hair back behind her ear.
"Feel free to play with any of the animals, they're all adoptable, and we encourage you to interact with them."
Mercutio appeared at his boyfriend's side, smiling proudly. Benvolio noticed he was already holding a dog, a tiny white and black ball of energy.
"What do you think?"
"It's perfect," Benvolio said honestly, bending down to grab one of the dogs from the pen.
Mercutio grinned wider, and set his puppy down.
Not long after, the entire floor of the waiting room was covered with puppies. Benvolio was lying down, his entire torso littered with dogs, some licking his face.
"Guys, come on, that's my job!"
Mercutio scowled jokingly, and scooped up the puppies that were by his boyfriend's face, depositing them onto his own lap.
"Mer," Ben whined, pouting.
"Give them back!" He half-heartedly pleaded from the floor.
"Nope!" Mercutio replied smugly, popping the 'p'.
"You'll have to kiss me for them."
"That's not much of a compromise, I would have kissed you anyways," Benvolio stated, repositioning one of the puppies that was sleeping on his torso.
"You know this isn't how a compromise works, right Benny?"
Benvolio said nothing.
"Well, if you think a kiss is beneath you, I have a few other ideas-"
"No, Mer. We are not having this conversation in front of the puppies!" Benvolio hissed, covering the ears of the dog that was snuggled the closest to him.
"Benvolio, you are too good for this world," Mercutio said, stroking the head of a puppy absentmindedly.
"Shut up."
"I'm serious. You're all tousled hair and sweet smiles and adorable. Accept it," Mercutio said, taking the opportunity to carefully lay down beside his boyfriend and snuggle into his side, placing the puppies that he had stolen back onto Ben's lap.
Benvolio sighed.
"I want to adopt every single dog in this entire building," he said after a moment. Mercutio smiled. He was entirely whipped over this adorable boy, and he wasn't mad about it.
"Maybe when we buy a house, but we certainly can't bring them all to our apartment, babe. It's too small."
"Then we'll buy a house and fill it with dogs!"
"Ben, I think you're getting ahead of yourself here," Mercutio remarked.
"No I'm not. I think we're ready to get a real place, not just a shitty apartment," Benvolio said earnestly.
"And we should get dogs." He added, kissing the puppy that was chewing on his hoodie.
"Obviously." Mercutio leaned over to give Benvolio a real kiss, and then straightened up.
"Now, are we taking any of these little guys home or what?"
