Tutoring Sessions
Type: Romantic/College AU
Ship: Logicality
Patton was falling behind in math. It was hard, boring, and the only subject he didn't like. But he was so far behind that even his friends were telling him to get a tutor. The one thing he dreaded.
"Come on, it won't be that bad. And you'll be in a group," Roman says.
"I don't want to! I'm not one of the bad kids, I shouldn't have to go!" Patton protests.
It was true, most of the students who had tutors were frequent misbehaviors or slacked off, but there were other students too. Students like Patton, who just needed a little more help. He failed to see there was nothing wrong with that.
"Pat, you might act like our dad sometimes, but now it's our turn," Virgil says.
Patton scowls, which is unusual for him.
"We're here," Roman says, parking the car.
Roman and Virgil are Patton's best friends in college. They are all in their early 20's, attending the same college. As a result, they had a carpooling system.
"K, thanks," Patton says, grabbing his backpack and getting out.
Roman and Virgil drive off to find a better parking spot, leaving Patton on his own. He walks in and makes his way to the library. He sets down his backpack and pulls out his computer.
Just a few short minutes later, a tall boy with glasses and a stern expression walks in. He goes directly to Patton and asks,
"Are you the person I'm here to tutor? Patton Snow?"
Patton nods. The boy smiles. Or at least kind of does. He isn't frowning as much.
"I am Logan Johnson," he says, "Now, let's get started,"
Patton nods. He wonders where the rest of the group is, or if there was a mistake and it was one-on-one. He hoped it wasn't.
"O- ok. So the class is Algebra 2," Patton says, shuffling to get out his notebook and folder.
Logan nods.
"I am aware. What specific points are you struggling with?" he asks.
Patton shrugs.
"I don't really know. I just don't... get it," he says.
Logan blinks.
"I can't help you if you can't explain your problem," he says.
"But I don't know what my problem is. I'm just... I don't know, dumb," Patton says, "That's why I'm here,"
Logan's expression softens a little.
"No, it's not. You're in an average math class for your age and doing fairly well compared to most students. Tutoring does not mean you're dumb," Logan says.
"You're only saying that because you're a tutor," Patton grumbles.
Logan sighs.
"Patton, trust me, I've met people while tutoring that are similar to you, and then I've met people who are legitimately dumb. People who cannot understand the difference between Geometry and Science class," he says.
"Ok, well if I'm not dumb then how do I do this?" Patton asks.
"Here, the most common source of confusion is how the problems are solved," Logan says, "So what is your mindset when you're solving them,"
Patton tries to explain how he tries to solve the problems, and that's when Logan identifies the issue.
"See, that method won't work for you. You'll need to try a different one," Logan says, "Like this one, for example,"
Logan draws out the equation, making sure to explain his thought process when using it. Just as he finishes, the first bell rings.
"Time is up. I will see you tomorrow, Patton," Logan says, standing up.
It's only after Logan stands up that Patton realized their arms had been touching.
---
Day 2 of tutoring.
As it turns out, there was no group. It was just Patton and Logan. Which made Patton feel even worse.
---
Day 3 of tutoring.
When Patton got there, Logan had already arrived. They exchanged a hello and Patton sits down. He doesn't know why, but he feels butterflies in his stomach around Logan. Maybe he's just nervous about math. That had to be it.
---
Day 5 of tutoring.
Patton and Logan have gotten to know each other on a more personal level. Logan finds Patton to be quite excitable and bubbly, which is the opposite of him. Still, he enjoys, maybe even looks forward to, his sessions with Patton.
---
Day 8 of tutoring.
As they're about to leave Patton asks a question.
"Hey, Logan?"
"Yes?" Logan asks.
"I was wondering if maybe- maybe you want to hang out and get coffee after school? At the cafe downtown?" Patton suggests.
Logan feels his heart leap a little. Patton feels anxious building up inside of him as he waits for a response.
"That sounds lovely, Patton. I'll meet you there at 4," Logan says.
Patton breaks into a wide grin that makes Logan smile a little too.
"Great! See ya!" Patton says, rushing out and to his first class.
---
At the cafe, Logan waits patiently for Patton to arrive. For a few minutes, he isn't sure he will, which gives him a crushing sort of feeling. Yet another feeling Logan didn't understand.
"Hi, Lo!" Patton says, walking up behind him.
He takes the seat across from Logan, smiling brightly.
"Hello, Patton," Logan says, "So why did you want to meet here?"
"Just to talk. Y'know, get to know each other," he says.
Logan nods.
"I see," he says.
---
Day 11 of tutoring.
Patton and Logan have gotten coffee a second time. At first, Patton didn't like going to the sessions at all, but now he looks forward to them.
A little while later in the day, Patton, Virgil, and Roman are walking together and Patton trips. Before the other two can react, someone helps Patton up. As he looks up, he realizes it's Logan. Patton goes very red.
"T-thanks," he says.
Logan just nods and hands Patton his books. Once he walks away Patton turns back to his friends.
"You like him, don't you?" Roman asks.
"What? No," Patton says.
"You're very red. Plus, I saw the way you two were looking at each other," Virgil says.
"What way?" Patton asks.
Virgil lifts his eyebrows up and down a few times.
"Oh crap, we have a class like right now," Roman says, checking the time.
He grabs Virgil by the wrist, rushing them both to their class. Leaving Patton to wonder if he really did like Logan.
---
Day 15 of tutoring.
Patton did. He really did. But he couldn't tell if Logan felt the same way. He was practically perfect in every way but hid his emotions a little too well. Not that he was hiding them as much as when they first met.
"Hey, Lo," Patton says, "Coffee again? 4 PM?"
Logan nods.
---
After they had gotten coffee, Patton decided to just say it. As they walked out, still talking a little, Patton brought it up.
"Hey, Lo," he says, "We've been getting pretty close lately and- and I- I-" he stutters.
As he was panicking, Patton thinks about what Roman would do in this scenario. So he does just that.
Patton kisses Logan.
For a second, Logan seems shocked, but to Patton's delight, he kisses back. The two of them stand there, in front of the cafe, together, for a few moments. Once they break apart Logan says,
"As do I, Patton Snow. I love you,"
Patton smiles so brightly Logan can't help but feel more joy than he ever had before. Who knew he could find love just by being a math tutor?
Boom Logicality. Requests are still open, feel free to leave any. Peace out, my peeps!
