Roman sneaks up and scares his boyfriend with a hug from behind. Logan gasps a little, but smiles.
"Hello, Roman," he says.
"Hi, babe!" Roman says brightly, "We're attending another ball tonight!"
"I hope you didn't just throw one for us again," Logan says.
"Nope! It's a meeting kind of ball, in the Shadow Kingdom! I still don't get why they called it something so scary," Roman says.
Logan sighs.
"Prince Roman, all the kingdoms are named after their defining trait or element. For example, we are the Celestial Kingdom, as the sun, moon, and stars shine brightest here," he explains.
"I know, I know. I suppose their name is better than 'The Darkness Kingdom' or 'The Gloom Land'," Roman says.
Logan smirks.
"Yes, I think their current name is adequate," he says.
"Alright, let's go get ready!" Roman says, grabbing Logan's arm.
---
"Roman, need I remind you that this is a political ball, not a dance party?" Logan asks.
Roman smirks charmingly.
"I don't see why it can't be both. One dance?" he asks.
"Fine. But then I must get to your father's side," Logan says.
"You're right, you're right, you are his advisor," Roman groans.
Logan smiles.
"Yes, but one dance first," he says.
---
After the ball, Roman finds Logan in his room. He enters and sits down next to him.
"So," Roman says, "What's got you down in the dumps?"
"I am not in any sort of dump, but your father has ordered me to- to be the new advisor for the Shadow Kingdom. The king has died, and now Prince Virgil will be stepping up," Logan says.
Roman's smile falls.
"What?" he asks, his voice barely a whisper, "You- you're leaving? But the Shadow Kingdom is so far away!"
Logan takes Roman's hand.
"It will be ok, my love. It is only until Prince Virgil can find his own advisors and stabilize the kingdom," he says.
"But that could take years! Logan, I love you," Roman says.
"I know. I love you too, Roman. I always will, I promise. And I promise I'll come back," Logan says.
*Present day*
"King Roman, your presence is requested in the Shadow Kingdom in two days. We must leave immediately," Duke Remus says.
"Remus, please just call me Roman. We're cousins, are we not?" Roman asks.
"Sorry, Ki- Roman. Roman," Remus says.
"It's fine, Re. I'll pack my bags and be ready to go in ten. How long will we be there?" Roman asks.
"A week, if everything goes smoothly. If not, up to a month," Remus says.
Roman nods.
"Thank you,"
He goes down to his room, grabbing two trunks and filling them with clothes. He takes a brief moment to admire the painting of him and Logan. It has been four years since he's seen him, and he's still madly in love.
---
"We are arriving, my king," one of Roman's advisors says.
Roman looks out the window of his carriage. The journey has been long, but as long as Roman gets to see Logan again, it will all be worth it.
"Need I remind you that we are here for a meeting, not to see your love interest?" the advisor asks.
Roman smirks, but not as charmingly as he would with Logan.
"I don't see why it can't be both," he says.
The advisor sighs.
"Just be professional and listen to me," she says.
"I'll take your advice into consideration. Do not forget that I am the king," Roman says.
"Of course, your majesty. I did not mean to disrespect you," she says, bowing down.
"Get up. We're about to get out," Roman says.
The advisor nods as the carriage door opens. Roman steps out and looks around. His eyes land on Logan, standing in front of someone.
In a protective way.
That bugs Roman, but he beams nonetheless.
"Welcome, King Roman of the Celestial Kingdom, to the Shadow Kingdom. I am Sir Patton, King Virgil's head knight," the man says.
Roman nods.
"Pleasure to meet you, Sir Patton," he says.
Patton leads Roman and his advisor down to the castle, and into their rooms.
"King Roman, you will be staying here. Dinner will be at sunset, be sure to be there on time," he says.
He leaves the room, and to Roman's dismay, so does Logan. Logan didn't even look at Roman!
Roman sighs and lies down on his bed. Surely Logan couldn't have forgotten him? He is the king, after all. He is impossible to forget!
But what if Logan doesn't love him anymore? It has been four years. What if he's now in love with that guard and Logan wants to break up with Roman!?
---
It's sundown, and Roman makes his way to the dining hall. He enters and sits down in the chair meant for him.
"Hello, your majesty. I was expecting to see someone else here, but I guess you will do," King Virgil says, sitting down.
"What do you mean?" Roman asks.
"Just that I didn't expect the prince to be here when I asked for the king," Virgil says.
"Oh, I am the king. My mother stepped down a few years ago," Roman says.
Virgil nods.
"I see. And you know the reason you are here?" he asks.
"To discuss the unrest on both of our borders. You want an alliance, don't you?" Roman says.
"Clever. Almost as clever as my advisor. He was from your kingdom, was he not?" Virgil asks.
"He was indeed. Logan, correct?" Roman asks his thoughts all suddenly about Logan.
Does Logan still like him? Does he?
"Yes. Such a fine, handsome young man," Virgil says, "Now, let us have dinner and discuss,"
Roman nods.
---
A little over a week passes, and in that time Roman tried to speak to Logan twelve times, all without success. But finally, on the last day, he corners him.
"Logan! How have you been? Why haven't you been talking to me?" Roman asks.
"I don't know what you mean," Logan says.
"Well, we're dating! And I've missed you so much!" Roman says, "And according to King Virgil, the Shadow Kingdom is doing great now, so you can come home!"
He smiles brightly, but Logan doesn't return it. Instead, he merely frowns a little.
"My apologies, King Roman, but I belong here. As the official head advisor to King Virgil. You will have to let your teenage romance go," Logan says, turning around to leave.
Roman's eyes fill up with tears. Ignoring the past four years, they had been together for five years! It was so much more than a teenage romance!
"I- I see. Just let me say one last thing," Roman says.
Logan turns around.
"This is the one promise you've ever broke," Roman says, "And happy anniversary,"
Roman turns on his heel, making his way back to the carriage to leave, his heart broken into a thousand little shards.
ANGSTYYY, thank you Mermaid! I just love writing angst with Roman! Well, requests are still open, peace out!
