Vomit Warning

Patton is the dad of the Mindpalace, there was no doubt about that. But the Dark Sides always recognized someone else as their father figure, seeing as Patton was just 'the dad', not their dad. Their dad is Janus.

And he was not having a fun time currently.

"Remus, I told you to stay-" Janus says frantically.

Remus throws up on the carpet.

"In the bathroom," Janus finishes.

He sighs. He snaps his fingers twice and two yellow snakes appear.

"Help clean up the mess," he instructs them.

"We are your ssssservants Janusssss," one says.

"No, but we can handle thissss. Stop being a pussssy and let's go," the other says.

Lies and Truth. His little pets that were so much more than that.

Janus picks Remus up, making sure not to get any of the barf on him, and plops him back into the bathroom, in front of the toilet.

"Jan Jan? I don't feel so-"

Remus throws up again. Thomas was feeling sick, so of course, if affected the sides. But which sides it affected couldn't be predicted. Janus got lucky this time. Lucky being a relative term. He had to take care of a sick Remus.

"Jan? Is Thomas sick?"

Janus turns around to see Virgil. He and Remus were both younger than him, Virgil because he used to be Fear, and Remus because of the split. So their ages were set back quite a bit. Virgil was a teen and Remus was around 10 or 11. Janus couldn't recall is Logan was similar due to Logic always changing to what's best.

Janus nods.

"He isn't. How are you feeling?" he asks.

The anxious side was always so pale it was hard to tell if he was sick or not.

"Meh. Mentally, I'm a little...." he trails off.

"A little..?" Janus prompts.

"Foggy," Virgil says.

"What aren't your symptoms?" Janus asks.

"Head hurts. I'm hot," Virgil says.

Janus nods.

"Truth, get Virgil some fever pills and water," he instructs Truth.

"Yessssss. Come this way, little one," he hisses.

Virgil nods and follows Truth to the kitchen.

"Ok, now Remus, how is your condition?" Janus asks.

"He is doing much better, he stopped vomiting a while ago," Lies says.

"Oh no," Janus mutters.

He walks into the bathroom to see Remus still vomiting into the toilet.

"I don't like this," he mumbles.

"Neither do I," Janus says, "We all just need rest,"

"And how do you think-"

Remus pauses as he vomits.

"Think we should do that? Virge, Logic, and Morality are all going to push him. Morality the most," Remus says.

Morality, or Patton, was also selflessness. And Thomas taking time for himself to recover would fall under the 'selfish' category. And of course, Logan never wanted to stop working and Virgil would be panicking, wondering if there is something better Thomas should be doing.

"I'll handle it," Janus says, "Lies, take care of Remus. Get him a bucket and put on a horror movie or something. Just be sure to get some food in him before he vomits again. And hydrate. All of you,"

He leaves the darker side of the mindscape to go over to Lights. But first, he should check in on Thomas.

He takes a deep breath, focuses on changing into a different side, and sinks out.

Janus appears in the living room behind Thomas. He looks down at himself to make sure he is who he thinks he is.

"Sup Thomas," he says.

Thomas turns around.

"Anxiety? What are you doing here?" he asks between coughs.

"Just checking in. Making sure you're not as sick as I think," Janus says.

Thomas nods.

"Ah. Well, I'm ok. You can go now," he says.

"Don't sound too eager that I'm here," Janus says, sinking out.

- - -

"Patton, I'm dying! Oh, tell my tale-" Roman says, collapsing onto the couch.

"Kiddo, you're not dying. It's just a cold," Patton says.

One of the side-effects of Roman getting sick was he was extra dramatic. Patton was very used to this by now.

"It is, Padre! Let me go, I will die in peace," Roman says.

He goes a little too still for Patton's liking.

"Logan! Ro's sick!" Patton calls.

Logan comes down the stairs, looking pale.

"Is he now? Well, I suppose that would make sense, with Thomas being sick and all. But I can't help, I have work to do and I cannot afford to stop," Logan says.

Somewhere in the back of Logan's mind, he knew he should take a break. When he was working, so was Thomas.

As Logan goes back up the stairs, he breaks into a coughing fit.

"Logan, get down here now," Patton says, in such a commanding voice that Logan obeyed.

Patton presses his hand to Logan's forehead.

"You have a fever," he says.

Patton grabs an ice pack from behind him, sits Logan down on the floor on a pile of pillows, and grabs him some cough drops.

"You are staying down here. Resting. No more work until you are better," Patton says.

"But I need to work," Logan argues, "If Thomas doesn't have a proper schedule then he won't be able to schedule events with friends, and he might forget some already scheduled!"

Patton sighs.

"Fine. Just take it really, really easy. And keep the ice for when you're burning up and take the cough drops," he says.

Patton turns back to Roman as Logan disappears up the stairs.

"Roman, are you feeling any better?" he asks.

"Yes, Padre. I see the shining light of hope in the distance. Or maybe that's the afterlife..." Roman says.

"Oh yes, I love just how dramatic you are. Mwah, mwah,"

Patton turns around and sees Janus. His fellow father figure. And boyfriend.

"Pat? Who was that?" Roman asks.

"Nobody," Janus says in Patton's voice.

"Oh. Ok," Roman says.

He shifts a little and grabs a blanket, snuggling with it before falling asleep. Patton turns to Janus.

"Why would you lie?" he asks.

"He hates me and I'm not supposed to be here," Janus says.

Patton sighs. He hates that this is the truth.

"Yeah. So what are you here for? I'm sure at least one of your sides is sick so it's probably important," he says.

Janus nods.

"I have Lies and Truth helping, so it's under control. But no, it isn't important," he says.

Patton frowns but nods. He doesn't like Lies. He doesn't trust her. Or Truth, for that matter. They both make him uneasy because he can never tell them apart.

"So what is it?" Patton asks.

"You need to give Thomas a break. For at least a few days. It's really bad and he can't handle being selfless and helping people right now. Plus, we don't want to spread it around," Janus says.

"Well, Logan is still working. And I'm planning on working too, there are a lot of things Thomas needs to do. And he could at least call his friends. And if they just need his help for a little while then I'm sure-"

"No. I won't argue further on this. Thomas needs his rest. I saw how sick he is. And just look at Roman!" Janus says, pointing to the creative side.

"Yeah, I'll do the newsies in wonderland," Roman mumbles.

"See? Look, Patton, I know you want to help the world, and that's great! But you can't unless you rest. Unless we all rest," Janus says.

Patton sighs.

"Fine, but can you stay with me?" he asks.

"I'm not sorry, but my kids are both really badly sick," Janus explains.

"Bring them over here! We can have a sort of sleepover! And it's so much warmer and nicer here," Patton says.

Janus nods.

"If I can get Remus to stop vomiting I will. And you should probably make sure Roman doesn't start," he says, sinking out and over to the darker side.

Patton was right, the lighter side was much warmer and nicer. Here was old, falling apart, and always a little too drafty. There was a reason Virgil wore a hoodie, Janus his cloak, and why Remus's outfit has so many layers. It's cold.

"Truth? Lies? Update," Janus says.

The two snakes slither over to him.

"Virgil hassss fallen asleep, his fever is spiking up and down. I can't get him at the right temperature. But hisssss headache has faded a little," Truth says.

"And Remus hassssn't continued puking momentarily. He is not ok in any other way," Lies says.

Janus nods.

"Thank you," he says, snapping his fingers twice, making the snakes disappear back into his patch.

"Remus? Virgil? Kids, we're going over to the Lights. Morality is going to help take care of you and you won't have to deal with your brother, Remus," Janus says.

He knew Remus and Virgil hated Roman. Virgil mostly because Remus did, and the two of them were more brothers than the two parts of creativity would ever be.

"What about Logan?" Virgil asks.

"I'll keep him quiet," Janus promises.

The two boys nod.

"Remus, don't grab a bucket, and Virgil, don't take your stress ball, hoodie, or blanket," Janus instructs.

They nod and grab their things. They both hold Janus's hands as he sinks them out.

They appear in the Light's common room, Roman still passed out and Logan's eyes glued to a documentary on the TV. Virgil sits down near Logan.

"Animals?" he asks.

Logan nods.

"In the rainforest," he says.

The two of them watch, fascinated, neither fully realizing who they're with.

"Jan Jan? I'm gonna-" Remus starts to say.

Janus doesn't react in time, but Patton does. He grabs the bucket and Remus vomits in it instead of on the floor.

"I do know what I'd do without you, Patton," Janus says, relieved.

Patton smiles.

"Me too," he says, pecking Janus on the cheek.

"Imma scare them with this!" Remus says, holding up the bucket.

"No you are not," Janus says, grabbing Remus by the collar and setting him down on the couch, "You're not causing any mischief unless you want to spend time with Roman,"

"Fine," Remus scowls.

"Wow, you're good," Patton says.

"I learned from the best, love," Janus smiles.

The two share a quick kiss before Logan flops to the floor with a headache and Remus misses the bucket. It was going to be a long few days of recovery.

Thank you Fuji, my bestie, for suggesting this! Speaking of which, requests are still open and probably will be for eternity. Peace out, my peeps!
