*Four years ago*

"Logan, I do hope you are done with the dancing and are ready to get to business," King Thomas says.

"Yes, your majesty," Logan says.

It's the night of a ball. Roman, Logan's boyfriend, managed to convince him to have one dance. But now it is time to do his job as an advisor to the king.

"Now, as you both know, my father died last week. My board of advisors has been trying to keep the kingdom under control, but they simply can't. And many were hand-picked to agree with my father, so I need new advisors," Prince Virgil says.

"And what are you suggesting?" King Thomas asks.

"I would like to have Sir Logan as one of my advisors. You said yourself that he is smart, logical, and honest. I need advisors like that," Prince Virgil says.

Logan looks from King Thomas to Prince Virgil. This can't be happening, right?

"That sounds like a good idea. But just until you can stabilize your kingdom, then Loga returns home," King Thomas says.

Logan holds back a sigh. Of course, he doesn't get a say in it.

"Sounds delightful. Now, I must go find my mother before she starts trying to dance," Prince Virgil says.

King Thomas nods as Prince Virgil walks away.

"Logan, you are dismissed. Enjoy the ball," he says.

"Yes, my king," Logan says.

Logan leaves the ball and goes back up to his room, where Roman greets him after a half-hour. He sits down beside Logan.

"So," Roman says, "What's got you down in the dumps?"

"I am not in any sort of dump, but your father has ordered me to- to be the new advisor for the Shadow Kingdom. The king has died, and now Prince Virgil will be stepping up," Logan says.

Logan looks up at Roman sadly.

"What?" he asks, his voice barely a whisper, "You-you're leaving? But the Shadow Kingdom is so far away!"

Logan takes Roman's hand.

"It will be ok, my love. It is only until Prince Virgil can find his own advisors and stabilize the kingdom," he says.

"But that could take years! Logan, I love you," Roman says.

"I know. I love you too, Roman. I always will, I promise. And I promise I'll come back," Logan says.

*Two years ago*

"Sir Logan, how are you this morning?" King Virgil asks.

"Satisfactory, your highness," Logan says, kneeling as he enters the throne room.

Virgil smiles.

"Good. We have a lot of work to do today, and I'm gonna need your help. It's a total nightmare. Who knew ruling a kingdom was so tedious?" he asks.

"Everyone, your majesty," Logan says with a smirk.

Virgil chuckles.

"Yeah, I guess. Now, let's get started," he says.

*One year ago*

"Logan, as much as I have adored you here, I think it's time you return home," King Virgil says.

"Are you sure, King Virgil? There is still much I can do here," Logan says.

"I insist. And I have gotten word that the King has stepped down, so the kingdom will need your help," Virgil says.

"I see. I will pack my things," Logan says.

He stands up, but on his way to his room, Sir Patton stops him.

"You can't go yet! I'll miss you so much and you've helped me! Wh- what's gonna happen to me?" he asks.

Over the years, Patton had been bullied by the other guards, and Logan helped stop that. Now Logan was leaving and leaving Patton without protection.

"I'm not sure, but-" Logan says.

"Please, Logan. They're going to hurt me again!" Patton pleads.

Logan sighs. He thinks back to Roman, his love, the one he wants to get back to. But Patton needs protection, and Logan is the only one who can help.

"I'll stay," Logan says.

Patton hugs him tightly.

"Thank you," he says.

*Present day*

"King Roman is coming today," Patton says.

Logan smiles.

"He- he is?" he asks.

"Yep! Butttttttttttttttt-" Patton says.

"But what?" Logan asks.

"King Virgil ordered you to stay away from him. He doesn't want him to cloud your judgment," Patton says.

Logan's shoulders droop.

"I see. Well, I am going back to my work," he says, waving Patton away.

Patton nods and leaves.

The week passes, and it kills Logan inside to ignore Roman. He beautiful, charming, perfect, boyfriend. The love of his life.

But Roman won't love him anymore. Not if Logan continues following orders.

But he has no choice.

On the final day of Roman's stay, Roman catches Logan in a hallway.

"Logan! How have you been? Why haven't you been talking to me?" Roman asks.

"I don't know what you mean," Logan says.

He stiffens. He can't talk to Roman, as much as he wants to.

"Well, we're dating! And I've missed you so much!" Roman says, "And according to King Virgil, the Shadow Kingdom is doing great now, so you can come home!"

He smiles brightly, but Logan doesn't return it. Instead, he merely frowns a little. His heart is figuratively crying out for him to go back, back with Roman. But he can't. 

"My apologies, King Roman, but I belong here. As the official head advisor to King Virgil. You will have to let your teenage romance go," Logan says, turning around to leave.

His eyes well up a little, but he hides it. He's always been good at hiding his tears.

"I- I see. Just let me say one last thing," Roman says.

Logan turns around.

"This is the one promise you've ever broke," Roman says, "And happy anniversary,"

Roman turns and goes to his carriage.

Logan sinks to his knees, curling up and letting his tears fall. He really is an idiot. But he had to protect Patton and all the others. 

This was his doing, and there's nothing he can do to change it. Roman will move on. Logan won't.
