Tonight was an important night. Roman was throwing a ball. More specifically, his parents were. Roman was 21 now and still didn't have a partner. His parents want him to marry to form an alliance with any of the nearby kingdoms, and so they can continue the royal lineage.

Roman, however, did not want to get married. He had no interest in any of the women who desired his hand in marriage. Roman preferred going off and fighting dragon-witches or performing songs in the village. Roman got ready for the ball, dressing in his best white suit with gold trim. As a final touch, he put on his red sash. It was a silk material, which he preferred over the thin lace that his cousin adorned.

"The noble Prince Roman has arrived!" the guards announce as Roman enters the large room, descending the stairs.

Roman gives a bow and looks up. Dance music starts playing, and a lady pairs up with him. They begin to dance.

"Hello, Prince Roman," she says, "I am Princess Madelyn,"

"Hello," Roman says.

The continued to make small talk, Madelyn flirting, trying to get Roman's interest. Roman, however, was more focused on wondering what food they had at the ball, rather than the princess.

As the night progresses, Roman dances with several more girls, most barely registering with him. At least in a romantic sense. Roman takes a break from dancing and grabs a snack. His favorite is the cream-filled cherry pastries. As he's eating, he hears a commotion over by his parents. He decides to eavesdrop.

How dare you bring your son! This ball is for my son to find a bride, not yours!" Romans dad, the king, says.

"The invitation did not specify that other boys were not allowed, and he isn't here to find a girl. Unlike you, we do not just marry off our children!" a queen from another kingdom says.

Roman peeks around and sees a boy, his age, standing with his father and the queen. He gives a small wave.

"Mother, I'm going to get some food," the boy says.

He walks away from the fight and over to the food table. He stands next to Roman. The boy is tall, pale, and has dark hair and eyes.

"Beautiful," Roman murmurs.

"What? the boy asks.

"Uh- I said beautiful. The way the desserts are frosted," Roman says.

He goes red. The boy looks at him, his eyebrow raised. He shrugs.

"Yeah, I guess. I'm Prince Virgil, by the way. Just call me Virgil," he says.

Roman nods.

"Nice to meet you," he says.

After a long pause, Roman says, "Want to go explore the caste? I hate these things,"

Virgil nods.

"Me too. My mom drags me here, hoping I'll find a girlfriend. Sucks for her that I'm gay," he says.

Roman blushes a little. He couldn't believe there were princes out there allowed to be gay. Roman wasn't. He needed a girl to continue the family line, something he didn't care all too much about. They sneak out of the ball, taking a few cupcakes with them. Roman shows Virgil around the entire palace, starting with the grounds.

"Here is where sword training takes place," he says, "And over there is where you can fly the pegasi. Or Griffins, if you're feeling dangerous,"

"Can we? Like, right now?" Virgil asks.

Roman shrugs."I don't see why not," he says.

They both grin as Roman saddles up two pegasi.

"You ready?" he asks, hopping on.

Virgil nods.

"Let's go!" he says, patting the pegasus's neck.

The flying horse takes off galloping, and spreads its wings, taking flight. Virgil and his pegasus follow right after.

"Why did I suggest this?!" Virgil shouts over the wind.

He is clearly terrified, in a way that made him seem even cuter to Roman.

"I guess it was your flying spirit!" Roman laughs, "C'mon, this is fun!"

"I-I guess so. How often do you do this?" Virgil asks.

The two fly closer to each other, up above the clouds.

"All the time," Roman says.

"So that's why you're acting like a maniac. Aren't you terrified of falling?" Virgil asks.

He's clinging to the pegasus's neck as if that would secure him more.

"Not really. You get used to it after a while. But it looks like you're ready to pee yourself, so let's go down," Roman says.

He steers his steed down to the ground, Virgil's following close behind.

Once they land, Roman helps Virgil off his pegasus.

"That- that was pretty fun. The altitude, not so much," Virgil says, gasping for breath.

"Yeah, that's one of the worst parts. My first time up there, I got a nose bleed," Roman says.

He laughs a bit at the memory.

"So what now?" Virgil asks.

Roman shrugs.

"We could sneak down to the kitchens if you're hungry. Or we could go up to my room," Roman suggests.

"I had enough at the party. Let's see your room," Virgil says.

Roman nods and they race off upstairs.

More than a few times, Roman pulls Virgil into corners and hiding places as palace servants come through.

"Ow- what was that for?" Virgil whispers.

Roman waits until the maid passes. They both step out from behind the plant.

"I'm supposed to be at the ball. If I'm caught out, I'll be in trouble," Roman explains.

"Then why'd you leave? Look, we can go back if you want, I don't want to get you in-" Virgil says.

"It's fine. I don't care, this is way more fun than those balls," Roman says.

Virgil shrugs."If you're sure," he says.

Roman nods. They go up to Roman's room, where he puts on a little music.

"Want to dance?" he asks, in a mock-seductive voice.

Virgil grins."Why not?"

They start to waltz together, each skilled at every move.

"So I'm guessing you're the prince of this place. Why didn't you tell me?" Virgil asks.

Roman shrugs."I didn't want you to treat me differently," he says.

"I guess that's fair. So, you still looking for a girl? Your one 'true love'?" Virgil asks.

"Yeah. The thing is, I don't like girls. At least, not in the way my parents want me to," Roman says.

"I know how you feel. If it wasn't for my sister, I'd be in the same situation," Virgil says.

They talk and dance for an hour. After that hour, Roman switches the music."Ever done the tango before?" he asks.

"No, teach me," Virgil says."Ok, so you start out with this," Roman says, demonstrating the movements.

After about another hour or so, Virgil gets the hang of the dance. And at the dip, Roman decides to make his move.

"Aaand, dip," Roman says, dipping Virgil down.

Their faces get close, and Roman leans in more, kissing Virgil on the lips. Virgil is startled at first but then kisses back. The two of them stand up straight, kissing in each other's arms.

"I think I've fallen in love," Roman says.

"Really? I just thought you gave deep, romantic kisses to all the boys you meet at night," Virgil says sarcastically.

Roman smirks."Not all of them. Just you," he says.

"Yeah, I thought so. And I definitely know you're the one," Virgil says.

"Dating?" Roman asks.

"Dating," Virgil confirms.

The two share another kiss, not a care in the world for what their parents or kingdoms thought.
