*Roman POV*
I've got a soft spot for nerds. More specifically, this one nerd I've seen around town. Logan Berry. He's 21, like me, and works at the local bookstore. We've talked on occasion and he is the greatest person ever.
There's just one problem. He has a boyfriend.
But I don't think that should stop me. The guy he's dating isn't even that good looking. And he works at Hot Topic. Hot Topic! Really, is there any place lamer?
I get ready for the day, putting on my work uniform. I work in retail part-time, which sucks. Luckily it's only until my actual career takes off.
I drive to work, clock in, and begin my shift.
"Mornin' Pat," I say.
Patton and I met when I first started working here. Since then we've become good friends.
"Hey Ro! Want to go to the park later? They're showing a movie!" Patton says.
"Sure!" I say.
I really hope its a Disney movie.
"What movie is it?" I ask.
"The Sound of Music, I think. It's the only one showing tonight," He says.
Even better.
"Great! Are we going with anyone?" I ask.
Patton nods.
"Jan's inviting some of his friends. Two, I think," I say.
"Mk. So am I the third or fifth wheel?" I ask.
Patton shrugs.
"I dunno. It's at 7, so we're meeting at Jan's house at 6:30," He says.
"Ok," I say, "See you after work then,"
He waves goodbye and leaves. I guess he was working the early morning shift.
*Virgil POV*
Janus invited me and Logan to an outdoor movie. He said Patton was coming along with a friend too. Fine by me, as long as they aren't the loud, annoying type.
Logan and I carpool to Jan's place. We hold hands as we walk up to the door. I knock.
"Hello, Virgil and Logan. I wasn't expecting you," He says, answering the door.
"Yes, he was!" Patton calls from the living room.
I smirk and walk inside. I sit down on the couch while Logan goes straight to Janus's pet snakes. He has three and Logan is fascinated by them. It's adorable.
"So who's the friend you invited, Pat?" I ask.
"His name's Roman. He's a work friend," He says.
On the other side of the room, Janus and Logan are talking about the snakes.
"Ah," I say.
He comes a few minutes later. I might be imagining it, but he pales when he sees me.
"Sup, Princey," I say.
He works at the Disney store next to the Hot Topic at the mall. I've seen him around there.
"Hey Hot Topic," He says.
"Are we ready to get going?" Patton asks.
We nod.
"Lo, c'mon, we're going," I say.
"Right. Coming love," He says.
Logan puts away his notebook and pencil and we're off.
---
During the movie, I find out that Roman is indeed the loud, annoying type. But oh well, he was just singing along. I do the same thing with my favorite musical. When I'm alone.
I'm a little uncomfortable with how flirty Roman is with Logan. It'd be fine if he was like that with everyone, then I could just attribute it to part of his personality. But no, he's just flirty with Logan. And Logan, being adorably oblivious, doesn't do anything. Patton's also too innocent to notice, and Janus doesn't care. So I'm left alone in my unease.
Logan gets up to go to the bathroom, and a few minutes later, Roman gets up to get snacks. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.
It's been nearly 20 minutes and neither of them has returned. The bathrooms and concessions are at the library, a five-minute walk from here. It's halfway through the movie, so there shouldn't be a long line for snacks anyway.
"I'm going to the bathroom, tell me what I miss," I say, getting up.
Patton nods but keeps his focus on the movie. Janus keeps his focus on Patton. Those two are definitely made for each other.
I walk over inside the library and over to the bathrooms. I stop right before I turn the corner.
"I'm sorry, but I have a boyfriend," Logan says.
"And? That didn't stop you before," Roman says.
"I prefer not to discuss that. But I can assure you, I hold no feelings for you," Logan says.
Wow, these corners are convenient.
"Are you suuure? 'Cause I doubt Hot Topic would mind, as long as we kept it quiet," Roman says.
Logan makes a sound of uncertainty.
"Roman-"
"Shh. See you tonight, 11 PM," He says.
Logan sighs.
"Very well,"
I quickly rush out of the building, my footsteps almost silent. I'm light on my feet. I see Roman walk out from around that corner. I do actually have to go to the bathroom now, so I go back inside.
Roman and I acknowledge each other when we pass and I'm disgusted. I don't meet his gaze as I go into the bathroom.
*Logan POV*
I've always suspected Roman has liked me for quite some time. It's annoying and a little awkward.
He corners me as I'm exiting the bathroom.
"Hey Logan," He says.
"Salutations, Roman," I say.
"Want to hang out after this?" He asks.
"Possibly. Why?"
"Just to catch up. We haven't talked since high school," He says.
I hardly remember him from high school. But we did go to the same one, I remember him from the theater department. He was the kind of person it was impossible to ignore. He most likely still is.
"Fine," I say, "Should I bring drinks?"
He raises his eyebrow.
"If you want, I won't object,"
We talk for a few more minutes, and I'm starting to pick up on that fact he's flirting.
"I'm sorry, but I have a boyfriend," I say.
One I should be getting back to right now.
Roman still carries the conversation for a few minutes more, getting increasingly flirty, but he eventually drops it. We leave to go back to the movie. I have a feeling Roman would be a nice person if he wasn't so... in love with me.
---
It's 11 PM. Roman knocks on my door, and I open. I asked Remus, my roommate, to be downstairs with us to make sure I'm not being stupidly oblivious to anything. And to get Roman to leave eventually. He has that effect on people. I offered him come to my place for that specific reason.
We chat for a while, and he seems to have dropped the flirty talk. He seems fairly normal, close to how I remember him in high school. He's deflated his ego a bit, so to speak, and overall seems pleasant.
After a few hours, Remus's crazy talk get's Roman to leave, but not before he tries to kiss me. I push him away, stating I have a boyfriend. I can tell he still doesn't think that matters.
After he leaves, I notice one of my ties missing. I don't think much of it. Remus sometimes steals them to look professional. For all his crazy, he still does want to hold a job.
The next morning I get up, dressed, and ready for work. We don't have a strict dress code, but I still dress formally.
I grab my coffee and head out the door, almost bumping into Virgil, who was about to knock. He looks upset.
"Good morning, love. Is everything ok?" I ask.
He looks up at me.
"How could you? How could you do this to me?!" Virgil shouts tears in his eyes.
"Do what?" I ask.
That was the wrong thing to say, apparently.
"Cheat! You filthy bas-"
"I did nothing of the sort," I state.
"You dirty liar. You little-"
"What's going on down there?" Remus shouts from upstairs.
He runs downstairs to see Virgil standing in the doorway, red-faced and crying, and me, looking very panicked and confused.
"Shi-oot. Shoot. Uhm, Virgie, let's walk back to your place," Remus says.
I shoot him and thankful glance, but Virgil doesn't budge.
"No! He cheated and he should pay!" He shouts.
"Look, I'm all for beating up my roommate, but this really isn't a good time," Remus says.
"I agree with Remus. You need to calm down and we can talk this over," I say.
Virgil is giving me a death glare.
"No. We won't be talking this over," He says, his voice scarily low, "Because I'm breaking up with you. Go have fun with your boy toy, you filthy heathen,"
"That's enough, Virgil, let's go," Remus says, grabbing Virgil's hand and dragging him away.
I close the door and crumple to the floor.
This makes no logical sense.
I loved him.
I love him.
I feel my phone buzz. It's Patton. Then Janus. Then Virgil.
I can't believe you would do that to Virgil. I'm disappointed in you, Logan.
Wow, I am not surprised at all. You are a horrible person for doing that, you know. But I guess you're too stupid to understand relationships. Consider this the end of our friendship.
I hate you. I thought you loved me. I guess I was wrong. Never speak to me again.
I can't believe this. I've lost all my friends. I didn't do anything. Why. What did I do to deserve this? What did I do that caused this in the first place?
Why.
Why.
WHY?
I have no friends. I'm in a different country from my family. I'm all alone now.
And I never thought I would hate it this much. But this is the end of my social life. I'm never going to have friends again. I don't want friends again. All I want is...
I don't know.
I don't anything anymore.
I need to get to work. I can't afford to show emotions. Not now, not ever again.
I hope that was angsty enough. Feel free to leave any requests or feedback in the comments. Peace out peeps!
