Assasins Creed One shot

In a world where DNA is everything, I found myself following the masses and submitting mine for examination. The 23 and Me report was thorough, but nothing short of surprising.

Already aware of my distant Viking heritage and links to the eighteenth century aristocracy, there was little to be discovered that I wasn't already aware of — save for the small percentage of Neanderthal.

Or so I thought.

I had already fallen into a deep sleep when the banging on my front door ensued. And in my half sleeping stupor, I was able to drag myself to the front door. I was definitely not prepared for what or yet who, was on the other side.

"Hello ma'am, we're from Abstergo Industries." A tall man in a darkened suit said.

"I'm sorry. Who?" I asked, still wiping sleep from my eyes.

"Are you Annabelle Thompson?" The second man asked.

A pit grew in my stomach, more-so as I watched him pull out the familiar logo that resembled the envelope that still lay on my desk.

"On Tuesday, April seventh, you submitted your DNA to be analyzed. You also signed an agreement upon doing so that you would assist Abstergo Industries in any further projects."

"I don't remember signing any agreement." I mumbled.

A dark smirk overtook the tallest man before he spoke once more. "It's in the fine print."

They say when you're faced with a dangerous situation, your fight or flight instincts take over. However I lived on the eight floor with no way down from my apartment, and I could barely swat a fly hard enough to kill it.

So I did what any sane person would do when faced with an impossible situation. I ran. At least I tried to run. The two goons tackled me at the stairwell, and soon cuffed me as if I had committed a crime.

Abstergo Industries was an unassuming building, hidden in plain sight and in such an obvious location I don't know how I never noticed it sooner.

"Dr. Raiken is very excited to meet you. She's been searching for links to the Norwegian artifact for years. And your generations obsession with giving out your DNA made it that much easier for her."

"I just—"

I cut myself off with a scream as a large figure had landed on top of the man holding onto me, and a blade I could not see was thrust into his neck, he quickly did the same with second man who was too slow drawing his pistol.

"Please don't kill me," I whimpered " I only did it for fun!"

The man was hooded and cloaked and I could not see his face. He bent down and wiped his wrist on the suit jacket of one of the men he killed.

"You've gone and made a mess for yourself, Freya." He mumbled. " You must come with me, it is not safe here for you anymore."

"Why are you helping me?" I asked as he quickly undid the cuffs still hooked to my wrist.

The man paused for a brief moment before taking a step closer and resting his forehead against my own. His breathing was steady, and for some reason I was calm.

"We work in the dark, to serve the light." He mumbled.

My life changed after that day. It was the day I found a family I didn't know I had, born from a creed birthed centuries deep. A creed I spent the rest of my life following. An Assassin's Creed.
