"Did I ever tell you about my brother?"

The hem of her dress swept the ground as she walked. Her shadow bent long down the corridor, distorted by the low light cast from the flickering gas lamps mounted along the walls. She lazily twisted a strand of hair around her finger, her other arm yy neatly tucked behind her back, brushing the ends of her dark braid.

At the end of the hall: Thump

She took a fighting stance immediately; shifting her feet, propping up her elbows, and sliding thin, silver daggers into her hands. Ambush, She thought immediately, It's an ambush.

"Who goes there?" Her voice echoed down the hall, "Show thyself at once!" A figure shuffled out of the shadows and into the low light of the gas lamps.

At first glance it appeared to be a young boy, dressed in ratty breeches and a frayed tweed coat. His dark hair was tucked into a dirty green cap, which was pulled low over an even dirtier face. Not an ambush then, She decided.

She relaxed her posture, allowing her arms to fall to her sides, slipping the daggers back into her sleeves, "Thou must be aware that thines presence will bring bad luck upon us all. As a boy."

The boy fell to his knees, pulling off his cap and gripping it desperately in his hands alongside a silver pocket watch, "Please." Her eyebrows shot up. A wave of silky dark hair fell around the stowaway's shoulders, "I am not a boy. I simply wished to join the ranks of the Artemisian Airships." She began to twist the strand of hair around her finger. The girl kneeling in front of her had an Italian accent, and an olive skin tone stained with dirt.

A smile tugged at her mouth, and the girl kneeling before her seemed to quiver, "My name is Zoë Nightshade. Second in command to Admiral Artemis, and Captain of this airship."

The girl mumbled, "Bianca, Captain. Bianca DiAngelo."

Zoë smiled, and thrust out her hand to Bianca, who gaped in return, "Well, Bianca, welcome to the ranks of the Hunter."

"Now that you are all cleaned up, I shall show thee around." Bianca picked at the sleeves of the new dress as they walked with one hand, the other rubbing the silver chain of her watch, "Doth thou know magic?"

Bianca nodded her head hesitantly, "Not the basics, but it does run in my family. I never learned to control the elements but..." She trailed off, but when Zoë gestured for her to continue, she began to speak, "I can shut things down by touching them..." Bianca glanced down, tightly wrapping her hand around the watch, "Even people."

Bianca suddenly gasped as Zoe wrapped her arms around her neck, pulling her into a hug, "It's alright Bianca." Zoe told her, "I will never make thee use thy's power on another human. I promise."

Zoë watched as Bianca pressed herself up against the window of the airship, flattening her face and hands against the glass. As always, gripped tightly in one of her hands was the silver pocket watch, the chain dangling below it.

Bianca's eyes darted around the city below them, though she did not appear to be transfixed by the bronzed bravado that seemed to encapture most new members. Instead her vision swept the streets, staring long and hard at the carriages that rolled by, and the shabby people that walked. She seemed to have an air of longings and desperation around her, one that greatly concerned Zoë.

"Bianca?" She asked softly, and Bianca flinched away from the glass, immediately turning to face Zoë with a stiffer posture. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine." Bianca said, glancing over her shoulder at the streets below, "Just looking."

Zoë sighed, "Okay." And Bianca turned back to the bronzed city.

"Pardon me, Zoë, for interrupting, but what exactly is Talos?" Zoë paused in her speech to the crew, turning to the young girl that had quickly became her unofficial apprentice. Bianca looked hesitant as she asked, a though she was already supposed to know about it.

"Tis fine, Bianca. I should not have expected thou to already know about it." Bianca nodded in relief, looking like the weight of the world has been lifted from her shoulders. "As thee knows, our armies are involved in a war with those from Titania. This airship, has been tasked with destroying the giant automaton they built, called Talos."

"Oh." Said Bianca, fingering the silver chain of her watch, "That makes sense. And you're planning a mission to infiltrate and destroy it now, yes?"

"Indeed. I was actually about to ask if thou would not mind being in charge of the team to do so." Bianca's watch clattered to the ground, and the girl immediately scrambled across the ground to get it, practically falling over herself in the process.

Fingers wrapping around the chain, Bianca swiftly stood up, tucking the hairs that had escaped in her struggle to retrieve the watch. When she spoke she stuttered, nervously rubbing the watch in her hands, "M-me? You w-want me to? B-but I'm so new! It's only my fourth w-week!"

"Bianca." Zoë placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, "I could think of no one better suited to do this. No even I."

Bianca's eyes widened, and she looked to the ground with a small smile, "Thank you. "

::

"Bianca!" Zoë shrieked into the communications device, "What does thou think thee is doing?" She slammed her hand against the panel, "Thou hath no right to ignore an order to retreat!

On the other side, Bianca smiled from inside the automaton. Around her lights flashed red, and a siren rang in her ears. The rest of her team was gone, unwillinging leaving Bianca behind. Bianca ran her hand over Talos' control panel, the other thoughtfully rubbing her watch, "It's fine Zoë." She said softly, "This way more people can live. It's just me, now."

"As thou's Captain and Commander I order thee to escape with everyone else!" Fury burned hot in her face and chest, her hands balled into tight fists. "The life of thou is in jeopardy, I cannot allow--"

"Did I ever tell you about my brother?"

Zoë stepped back hesitantly, "No, I did not know thou even had a brother. But that does not change anything-- get out of there right now!"

Darkness began to spread from Bianca's hand, slowing spilling over the control panel. Bianca watched contently, holding her silver pocket watch tightly in her hand, "He went missing a year ago. I've been searching for him."

"Bianca!" Zoë inhaled sharply, "Retreat!" Her arms began to shake, and when a sudden crash blasted over the communications device, Zoë nearly toppled over. "Bianca!"

Bianca peeled herself off the ground, the flashing lights and the roaring alarm had stopped. Her smile was soft and content, "I couldn't find him... No matter how hard I tried. I knew if I just could get on an airship... I'd be able to find him." Bianca's lip quivered.

"Captain, reports show that Talos has lost all power. The internal structure seems to be crumbling. The entire automaton is shutting down and collapsing in on itself."

Zoë slammed her fist into the side of the controls, and gave a furious scream, "Bianca! What have you done!"

"I'm shutting it down."

Zoë was frozen in shock for a moment, surprised Bianca actually responded to her. "Well you've done that-- so get out!"

"I can't. If I leave now they'll power it back up. I'm staying until the--" Bianca was pushed backwards, her watch flying out of her hands as a chunk of bronze from the ceiling and crushed her.

"Bianca!" Tears were flowing freely, slipping from her eyes and trailing smoothly down her cheeks. Zoë furiously wiped the wetness away, "Bianca!"

Bianca groaned, pinned down from the fallen chunk of bronze that crushed her chest and legs. She coughed, "Find him... For me... Please..." Her head dropped to the side, and she found herself staring at her watch, which had cracked open. A tear slipped from her eye as she stared at the photo of her brother, neatly cut out to fit inside.

Zoë tugged at her bangs desperately with one hand, failing to blink away the tears that stained her face, "Damnit...' She muttered, slamming her fist into the metal, "Damnit!"

"Zoë... Find my brother... Find Nico... " Bianca wheezed, reaching out her quivering arm to grab the shattered watch, "Promise me... Promise you'll find Nico..." Her fingers weakly wrapped around the watch.

"I-I-I promise." Zoë's voice shook as she quivered in front the controls, her eyes red and wet.

"Find my brother--"

Zoë's head snapped up as the controls dissolved into static. With the back of her hand she attempted to clear her eyes, but she couldn't help the cry that escaped her lips before she slid down to the ground, breaking down into sobs that shook her body.

Zoë bit her quivering lip, tasting the saltiness of her tears, "I promise."
