A Kingdoms Away

The sun rose slightly in the sky, a frigid breeze blowing lightly by. Lights were on in these surroundings, as the day began and some got up to do their work. Multiple things were spray-painted on walls nearby, and large gates surrounded their state. That's how it's been for a time now. She was in her late teens, shoved into the area just for people like her. Someone who wasn't what they wanted. Someone who wasn't straight. She hadn't always known, but the second the sensed something off, they always sent you away. A quiet sigh left her as she heard sobs from nearby. She knew that noise. A new person had just come to join them. No matter how much you insisted, it was no use. Somehow they knew. They always knew somehow. She watched as a girl came in, her face red from her shouting, and her voice finally going hoarse. She went quiet, presumably to save her voice, and just stood there as they turned and left. Of course after what happened, people like her were sent here against their will, just due to who they were. No matter who you were, if you weren't right, you were sent here. They said they wanted "perfection". But nobody could end up perfect, and even still their definition of perfect was flawed. She sighed quietly, a memory flashing in her mind painfully. It had been months since she saw her last. The girl that got her here in the first place. There was no anger towards her though, she only longed to see her again. A tall beauty, who had been taken away to somewhere she'd be safe. She missed her desperately though. She was always on her mind, always there an almost tangible memory, it was so vivid. She couldn't see her though. She was elsewhere, too far off. Too far out of her reach. She blinked away the pain, standing and going to help the hurt girl who had just entered. She smiled lightly at her, "Hey.. come on, it's okay. Let's get you to an open home." She murmured. The dazed girl just nodded, her head down. Then she heard the girl from behind her.
"How old are you.. you don't look.. much older than me." She murmured. She almost froze, but kept walking, before replying,
"I'm almost seventeen. I came here when I was fourteen." The girl looked surprised.
"I'm sorry." She mumbled, "I'm fifteen." She continued. In response she nodded.
"Name..?" She asked curiously. She felt the younger girl tense slightly, but then relaxed.
"My name.. is Sapphire." She replied. She nodded in reply, hoping her own name wasn't asked.
"What's yours?" The younger asked. She tensed, closing her eyes, and quietly steeling herself.
"My name.. is Aria." She finally said. Sapphire nodded quietly, muttering something under her breath. Finally they got to the house. She watched Sapphire walk in and wave, before she continued on to the wall. She quickly saw the ladder, before climbing up it and sitting on top of the wall. Over there was the girl she had fallen for. It was almost time for their meeting, and she hated she only saw her once a year. She waited quietly, before hearing the voice she had missed hearing for the longest time.
"Aria! Aria!" She heard her call. Her eyes brightened, seeing her there, and let out a small noise that sounded like a half-sob, half laugh.
"Cecily! I missed you." She said, smiling larger than she had in the year of waiting. She dashed towards her, hugging her tight. A few single joyful tears slid down her face, wishing to never let go, for this moment to last forever. "I missed you." She repeated, her voice cracking. As she pulled away, a smile covered her face as she wiped her eyes.
"I missed you too." Cecily murmured, pulling her in for another hug. They remained in the hug, before finally moving away and sitting down on top of the wall.
"So.. So how is it.. where you are?" She asked Cecily quietly. She looked her up and down- seeing her now as taller than last meeting. Cecily just sighed.
"I guess it's kind of lonely. I miss you a lot, and it takes a lot to well.. act straight. Some people on my side are going down on people like us. I know it's worse over with you though.. Are you okay? I know you.. You were taken over to the.. special area." She said, trailing off towards the end. Aria just sighed and smiled lightly.
"I'm doing as good as I can. We aren't treated the best, and a new girl came in today. I hate it here, but we both know I can't leave. They'd hunt me down and who knows what would happen from there." She replied, staring down at her feet. Cecily just nodded sadly, and pulled her into her arms. They sat there, on top of the stone wall, watching the clouds pass by quietly. Aria snuggled closer to her, feeling safer than she had in the past few months combined. "How did I manage to be so lucky to still have you, even after all these years of just a single visit?" She murmured happily, a tiny smile playing on her face as she reached up and flicked her hair.
"I don't know, but what I do know is that I never want to let you go." Cecily murmured back lovingly. The two stayed together, watching as the sun neared the horizon. "I should probably go soon." Cecily then murmured to her. Pain flashed in Aria's gaze, as she held tighter to her. She let out a noise that sounded like a half-whimper and closed her eyes.
"Why can't we just.." She then trailed off, her eyes going darker with sorrow.
"Trust me, I'll be back. I'll be back soon. I'll find a way for us alright?" Cecily murmured to her, voice shaking with sadness.
"W-wait before you go..." Aria mumbled. She fumbled around in her hoodie pocket, trying to grasp at something. When she grabbed it, she pulled a tiny black box out, and she clutched it like it was her life-source.
"W-what is that?" Cecily said, her voice raising an octave in surprise.
"A promise ring. A-and I'll list of my promises with it.. after I-I get it out." Aria said, before opening the tiny box. Inside was a smaller promise ring, perfect to Cecilys size. On the inside, were the words "the best is yet to come". On top of it, a rainbow set of jewels, that had a larger white gem atop it. "I-I promise I will only love you. I will never stray from you, and even in death you will be my heart. You are my soul, my o-other half, my lifeblood. A-and I swear to you, that I will ne-never..." she trailed off once again, sobs echoing from her as she was unable to complete her sentence. She took a breath, ready to finish her promise. "I will never leave you even if the world is against us. You are the love of my life, and I promise that I will be by your side whenever you need me, and I won't ever let you down." She finished. She looked up, seeing Cecily wiping her eyes of tears, and then was pulled into a large hug. She clumsily took out the ring, and placed it on her finger, giving her a large, teary-eyed smile, before bringing her back into a hug.
      "I love you." Aria murmured.
"I love you too." Cecily replied. "And I'll find a way for us to be happy. I'll find us a way out. I promise you, even without a ring, that we'll make it out alive. And we'll make ourselves a living, together." She finished. The two looked over at the setting sun, together in each other's arms. They were ready to face the future together.
