PLEASE CANON!! *breaks down into tears*

One-shot 6

Princess Mirajane strolled down the vast corridor.

Taking a walk in the evening always soothed her.

She took the stairs down to what led into the lush, beautiful garden.

As she reached the iron gate, there were whispers among the servants of the palace.

Smiling warmly at those that bowed or greeted her, she passed them swiftly, finally entering the large space that accomodated different kinds of plants and trees.

Tall trees provided plenty of shade where pretty flowers threw their fragrance. Many butterflies and colorful beetles flew around in the air, adding to the calm feeling of serenity.

The lovely princess finally reached the steady, elegant swing that stood between the shade of two towering trees.

Perching on the small seat, Mirajane took her time watching the small birds fly about in the beautiful garden.

A flash of red caught her eye and she straightened in a moment, craning her neck to see who the guest was.

The Commander of the kingdom's army seemed to be on his way to see her father, the king.

Mirajane swallowed when the blond man glanced at her.

Even with the distance of at least ten feet between the two, the beautiful princess had no difficulty noticing the Commander's strong jawline, his tough build and the scar that ran down his eye.

The man gave her a simple nod before walking into the corridors of the palace.

Mirajane slowly sank back into the swing.

She had always grown flustered around the commander.

The girl knew that she had a huge crush on the man who seemed to be oblivious to her feelings.

That did not say anything negative about his brain though as the princess was trained to show only those things that she felt the others should see.

Years of practice and words of knowledge had taught her to be the caring and loving person she had grown to be.

Adored by the people of the kingdom and everyone she held dear, Princess Mirajane was the perfect lady.

Beautiful beyond description, smart and skillful in many things, soft and sweet to those she met and spoke with, there was no doubt in anyone's mind who the luckiest man in the kingdom would be.

Every person knew that the man the enchanting princess chose to marry would live a happy life.

Mirajane sighed slightly, losing interest in her lovely surroundings.

That was where the problem lay.

It was common practice for the Princess to pick her groom on the night of her eighteenth birthday.

The worry she now had was whether Laxus Dreyar, the commander of the kingdom's army, would be open to the proposal.

Biting her lip, she knew the only way she could ascertain this would be if she asked him.

But the problem was that she was too scared.

"Commander Dreyar!!"

"Now, he's a man!"

"Oh, stop it, big brother!!"

Laxus paused on his way to the main hall to wait for the royal siblings to catch up with him.

Princess Lisanna reached him first, "Found you!!"

Laxus turned to look down at her as the young prince ran up as well, "Real men let their sister's win the race."

"Riiiiiight," the pretty princess didn't seem to buy it.

Laxus waited for the two to address him but frowned when they began to squabble among themselves.

He had places to be.

The king was waiting for him.

What could these two possibly need?

"Anything you wanted to tell me?"

The royal siblings turned to him with a glare at being interrupted before they realized that he towered over them, seeming a man who could easily break them in two.

"Yeah," the youngest princess grinned up at the commander, "You ask him, big brother!"

Laxus turned to the prince who blinked, "Uh, well, um, Lisanna and I, we, uh, we were wondering what you would be wearing for big sister's, um, eighteenth birthday?"

Lisanna wiggled her eyebrows at him.

Laxus wasn't sure why the question was a big deal.

He raised an eyebrow at the suggestive siblings, "For the ceremony?"

Their radiant faces fell, "Yeah?"

The commander shifted once to reel in his impatience, "I would be wearing what I usually wear. Security for the Princess' birthday must be taken seriously. Keeping unwelcome company out will fall on my shoulders."

The siblings stared at him.

Lisanna bit her lip before speaking, "My sister hasn't talked to you about anything yet?"

"Nothing."

"Well," the princess looked at her brother.

Prince Elfman scratched the back of his head, "Gee, I thought she would have manned up by now..."

Laxus worried about what they were saying but he needed to get to the main hall.

There was only so much time he could keep the king waiting, "Anything else?"

The siblings glanced at each other before turning back to the commander, "Uh, no..."

Laxus bowed, "Then I will be on my way."

The two young heirs hurried to bow as the taller man turned away.

The commander quickened his pace, only acknowledging with a nod the servants and others that walked the corridors of the palace.

He was late for the meeting he had with the king.

How was he going to explain himself?

"Commander Dreyar!"

Laxus halted at the angelic voice that called to him.

Turning around, he caught sight of the beautiful princess looking up at him, cheeks flushed and hair in disarray as she breathed heavily.

Hadn't she been at the garden only a few minutes ago?

"I," The lovely Princess hesitated as he bowed, "Uh, I- I need to speak to you... Would, would now be a good time?"

Laxus stared at her for a moment, noting the desperation in her eyes and the soft whisper her voice had reduced to speaking in.

He was going to be extremely late.

Mirajane swallowed, letting the silky shawl wrap around her slender arms as she kept the fabric pressed against her chest, her shoulders peeking out.

"Yes, Princess."

She jumped up at Laxus' deep voice.

The two had decided to speak in a secluded part of the garden, just outside the corridor. Dark red roses climbed up the short, gray wall that the pair stood beside.

As the twilight began to set in, Mirajane bit her lip wondering how she would phrase what she wanted to say.

Laxus waited.

"My birthday is this week... I- Uh."

Mira wondered how she would possibly ask him something so sudden and unexpected.

She looked over to see the muscular man watch her patiently as she struggled to put her thoughts into words.

"Every person of the king's guard will be there, Princess Mirajane. We expect to give you full security. You and your future husband."

Mirajane swallowed when he said the last word with absolutely no hint of any lurking emotion. The word didn't seem to stir anything in him at all.

"I, Thank you," the princess smiled at him, "I know."

Laxus nodded, seeming a little impatient which made her nervousness worse.

"Well, uh, I was wondering..."

There was a mental slap she gave herself at those words.

What a horrible way to ask someone if they would stay together with her for as long as they lived.

Swallowing once more, the beautiful princess looked up at the blond man and decided to ask him exactly the way she wanted to.

"Commander, would it please you if I were to ask that you to be my husband?"

No matter how brave she thought she looked, the last few words had become a soft whisper in the end.

Laxus stared.

All manner of impatience seemed to have left the strong built man's physique as he watched her, surprise showing in his eyes.

Mirajane waited, swallowing at the thought of finally having confessed in the most sudden way possible.

She waited with bated breath as the man finally returned to normal, his eyes going back to their usual stony glance, "Me?"

Any more pressure and Mirajane would burst out crying.

"Yes... Although, if you decline the proposal, I'll understa-"

There was a chuckle from the man and the lovely princess looked up to meet his eyes.

"Who knew."

Her heart flipped at the smirk curving his mouth as his eyes bore into hers.

She had never seen him show any emotion before.

Laxus reached out with his hand to pick a dark red rose off the wall before handing it to the surprised princess, two strides covering the distance before them.

"I will be more than pleased."

Mirajane's blue eyes widened when he moved to speak into her ear, his voice incredibly low, "We have a problem though, don't we? I'm extremely late to meet his majesty and it's all your fault... I wonder what you can do to make it worth the trouble I'll be getting into."

The princess' heart raced as her cheeks flushed.

A soft giggle escaping her soft lips as she turned to give him a kiss.
