I wasn't exactly sure what had made me decide to walk around the empty opera house that night, but I did nonetheless. It had been a pleasant walk, and I was glad that I'd taken it. I was even more glad when I'd passed under the stage and heard the voice of my little angel, Christine. Immediately, I hurried up to my box so that I could watch her from the shadows.
She was very poised as she stood there, singing to rows upon rows of empty seats. I could tell that she was practicing for the day when she would eventually be able to perform in front of a real crowd. I had to admit that I was looking forward to it as well.
I knew that when the time came—whenever that may be—she would not disappoint. True, she would need to work on a few technical points here and there, but I had no doubt that she had the ability to perform beautifully. She'd done so well in her lessons, after all.
As she sang, I let out a pleased sigh and closed my eyes. Her voice was perfect in shape and tone, in almost every detail—part of which was my doing, but that was beside the point. The notes floated delicately through the air, and I couldn't help but smile. "Beautiful," I whispered under my breath.
When she had finished the aria, she smiled at the empty auditorium and curtsied to her imaginary audience. I had to stop myself from laughing at how sweet she was. She hurried off the stage and, had I not wanted to keep my presence a secret, I would have clapped and called for an encore. Instead, though, I simply sat silently in my box, replaying the memory of her voice over and over.
It was then that I decided to start preparing her to take on the role of lead soprano. Hannibal was the next opera they would be performing, which I knew would be perfect for her voice, but unfortunately, there would soon be new management. This was rather frustrating for me, as I already had the present management catering to my every whim.
However, the rumor of the Opera Ghost was a popular one, and I was sure that, with a threatening note or two, I would be able to keep my box and monthly salary, as well as the other nice little perks I had.
