Voices
The shrieks in the night kept her up for hours. Their painful cries for help tugged at Lucy's heartstrings and sometimes she followed the haunting sobs.
She never found anything except for an empty room, yet they still screamed in pain and desperation, begging for help.
"Let me out of here!" A woman would scream, followed by the sound of chains rattling vigorously.
The man with the raspy voice would plead, "Help me, Miss... Please help me."
A baby would cry, its mother sobbing along with it. "Somebody.. please... My baby is going to die!" She would wail.
Lucy would cry, too.
She so desperately wanted to help these poor, tortured people, but she could never find them. It didn't make sense to her.
Why couldn't she find them? Where exactly were they? Could anyone else hear them?
One night, she followed the pleading of the woman with the baby, but she ended up in an empty room.
Too frustrated to care that it was the middle of the night, she shuffled into her mother and father's bedroom, knocking on the door to signal that she was there.
'Lucy, why are you up?'
'Do you hear them?'
'Who?'
'The people. They scream and cry all night long. It keeps me up.'
The man and woman looked at each other, their eyes widened. It was startling that their daughter was hearing some sort of ghosts crying during the night.
It startled them even more because Lucy had never heard a sound in her life.
She was born deaf.
