peter dies, lupin helps Sirius escape [Harry Potter]

"PETTIGREW!!" A voice roared, echoing down the darkened street on Halloween of 1981. Parents and children were shoved aside as a particularly chubby rat-like man ran through the crowd, a slimmer and lean muscled black haired man following after him in a rage.

"You killed them! You're a traitor! You betrayed them to Voldemort!" The second man bellowed, waving what looked like a stick. The watchers were stunned when a fiery red bolt of light was admitted, striking the other man in the back.

Inhuman wails of pain of pain echoed down the street, causing all the witnesses to stumble away in shock and terror. The second man was standing over the first, the stick pointing at the wailing man's face. The black haired man was sneering viciously, giving ample power to the bolt of light that had struck the man.

"Say goodbye, Peter." The man ordered, waving the stick yet again. A blue bolt hit the thrashing man, the spasms instantly stopping before restarting as the man clutched at his throat. Blood leaked from his lips as the evisceration curse did its work. Just as a dozen cracks filled the air the spasming man flopped dead on the sidewalk. The scent of death was quickly filling the air, blood seeping out where it could and the mans bowels leaving the body.

The man scoffed, gray eyes hard, even as three stunning spells hit him in the back.

Sirius didn't mind. He'd finished what he started. He couldn't take care of Harry, Hagrid was ordered by Dumbledore to take him back to Hogwarts. That was why he had allowed the man to borrow his motorcycle. Since his first task was ripped from his hands, Sirius' second task, the revenge of Lily and James Potter, had to be fulfilled. The death of Peter Pettigrew insured that.

When he was tossed into Azkaban for the murder of Peter, the only thing Sirius regretted was that he was also blamed for the murder of his friends. Without a trial he wasn't able to prove Peter had been their Secret Keeper, and that his execution was justified.

So Sirius sat, rotting away among the dementors as Dumbledore forced his godson to live with Petunia and Vernon Dursley. Only the form of Padfoot saved the mans insanity, the form of the dog being undetected by the dangerous beasts that patrolled the prison, sucking the happiness away. It wasn't until a year later that he had a visitor. Thin, scarred and tired, Remus Lupin appeared outside his cell one day accompanied by an Auror. The werewolf stared down at his last remaining friend, his fellow Marauder. It took awhile for Sirius to respond, too shocked at the sight of the man.

After a few moments, Sirius was able to pull a weak sneer on to his features. "Here to say I murdered James as well? Peter got what he deserved. The traitorous bastard was the one to kill them, ya know. But no one believes old Padfoot, calls him crazy they do. Mad, they say. Pah, rubbish."

Remus was silent, even as the Auror frowned at the prisoners words. For the first few months he had tried to get them to listen, but since he had slowly became silent the Aurors paid no mind to his claims. For him to still claim them, even after a full year of exposure to the dementors, it made the man question just how serious Sirius Black really was. Remus, however, was examining the man, knowing he was telling the truth. He could easily smell when someone lied, after all.

"You thought I was the spy." Remus stated.

Sirius barked out a laugh. "Got it in one. Biggest mistake of my life."

"What happened to the cub?" Remus questioned, knowing a semblance of secrecy should be used around the accompanying Auror.

"Pup? Dumby ordered the Gameskeeper to take him to the fortress. Couldn't stop him no matter how I tried." Sirius explained, understanding the subtle order for coding things.

Remus scowled, his eyes staring at Sirius for examination. After a few moments he glanced at the Auror. The man was staring attentively between the two. After a few moments consideration, Remus drew his wand fluidly, hitting the Auror with a Stupefy before he could even move. As the man's body hit the floor, Remus turned back to Sirius who sat stunned.

"Alright, flea brain. Here's how you're getting out of here."

Sirius grinned wickedly, staring at the planner of the Marauders. All of their ingenious pranks came from the werewolf's mind, after all. Only small inputs came from James and Sirius, barely anything coming from Peter.

"You're going to use Padfoot to sneak out of this place. I'm going to Obliviate the Auror and get back to the mainland. Once you escape, meet me at the Seaside Inn at the port town just outside the docks. We'll get the hell out of here, get you a wand, and start looking for Harry. Deal?"

"I'll have to swim across to shore, won't I?" Sirius muttered in annoyance, getting a nod from the other man. Looking at the bars of the cell, Remus transfigured two of them to be made of weak sandstone.

"Kick these two bars out tomorrow. Got it all memorized?"

"Got it, Moony."
