~Chapter 5~

“Maya! Wait up!” I blinked, turning my head to look over my shoulder. Some girl with layered, spiky brown hair with two teal streaks was running towards me. She looked at me with bright gray eyes and grinned.

“Hi! I’m Kindle! I’m in your Art and Psychology class. You wanna eat lunch together?” Ah, I knew I seen her before. She was in my third and first period.

I glanced over her before nodding and motioning my head in the direction of the lunch room. She smiled and started bouncing by my side.

“So, do you really speak Russian?” She asked.

“Fluently.” I nodded. She grinned.

“That’s so cool! I know Japanese fluently! I’ve always been in love with Japan. I wanna go there so bad.” She clasped her hands together, looking towards the roof. I blinked, raising an eyebrow.

“Been there.”

“You have? How was it?! Amazing? Spectacular? Absolutely-”

“Disgusting. I went after the earthquake and nuclear power plant meltdown.” She frowned, scrunching her eyebrows together.

“Sure, it’s gonna be horrible after a disaster but so is everywhere else.” I shrugged, sticking my hands in my pockets.

“Fair point.”

She stared at me for a moment, calming down.  “Is there a reason you look so emotionless?”

“It’s a condition of mine. I can’t show emotion of voice it very well. My thoughts are normal, however. It’s just my outward appearance and speech are somewhat flawed.” I stated, looking around the halls in a bored manner. Since it was lunch time, some people were placed randomly throughout the hallways but I could still hear the dull roar from the cafeteria, guaranteeing that my sensitive ears will hurt after this period.

“Come on. I’ll introduce you to my friends. There’s only two but they’re pretty chill.” Kindle told me, opening the door to the cafeteria. Instantly I held back a flinch at the noises and sighed, nodding. I let her lead the way, still feeling curious gazes on me.

We got to a table where a red-haired boy along with a black haired girl with green streaks sat.

“Maya, this is Forrest and River.” She nodded to the redhead who grinned at me and then at the girl who simply dipped her head.

I nodded, sitting beside Kindle as she gestured to the seat. “Maya Molniya, pleasure to meet you.”

“Pleasure? No need to be all formal.” Forrest said, chuckling as he brushed his bangs to the side.

I shrugged, resting my elbows against the table and took a sniff of the air. Instantly, I wrinkled my nose. “What….is that smell?”

Kindle raised an eyebrow and all three proceeded to sniff the air. Instantly they all gained disgusted and horrified expressions. “That, is the smell of Mystery Monday. It’s always a surprise what’s on the menu. And it’s an even bigger surprise given that fact most of the ‘ingredients’ are either fake or chopped up spare animal parts.”

“That….sounds disgusting. On Monday’s at my old school you could give some money to a kid and he’d go get food from one place. Even the teacher’s gave him money.” I mumbled, referring to Ryan. Of course, Belle and I would go with him but the teacher’s were pretty chill about it so long as we actually brought the food back along with ourselves.

“That’s so unfair! I wish we could do that!” Kindle gasped. River nodded simply while Forrest was staring at me wide-eyed.

“You lucky son of a bitch.” I smirked, nodding.

“Anyway, how you liking Wolf Haven?” He continued.

“It sucks.” I stated flatly. Forrest raised an eyebrow, along with the other two.

“Care to elaborate?” River questioned. I simply shrugged.

“I miss Nevada. The house is pretty cool on the upside. The yard is tiny as fuck compared to our old one though.” They nodded in understanding and something suddenly clicked in my head.

“Hey….I heard some girl singing earlier and I was wondering if you guys knew the song, seeing as the entire class seemed to be mouthing the words with her.” I said. They all looked at me curiously so I continued.

“It was: When you go into the woods, make sure you do not trip. For if your find the door, God’s might you shall flip. Open the prison, and you shall be cursed. Forever with a pain, you cannot reverse. Never let it go, never shed a tear. For if you go inside-”

“You’ll find your heart in fear.” All three finished in sync. I raised an eyebrow and Kindle smiled.

“It’s this old nursery rhyme that’s been passed down in Wolf Haven for like two centuries. They say two angels came down from heaven and fought and one sealed away the other in the Cursed Woods on the outside of town. That’s what they say, anyway.” I stared at her with a raised eyebrow before glancing at River and Forrest. They both nodded their heads and I sighed.

“Seems like superstitious bullshit.” All three shrugged before grabbing their stuff, the bell ringing overhead. How the entire period had passed so quickly, I have no idea.
