Chapter Two

Unexpected Guest

The prison was quiet for the most part, as Variks kept the place silent. It was all orderly fashion with the reef, and the prisoners knew it. The eerie silence added to the fact that it held the Reef's most dangerous prisoners.

In the 'Special Cautions' unit, a human man stays in his cell with greying hair and tattered armour. His eyes, a steely blue, glare at the floor. His arms are crossed and his head hung. He's obviously been there a very long time, as there are over a hundred tally marks on the wall above his bed.

He waits for a few of the guards to past before he slips his hand under his concrete pillow, pulling out a Rubix cube type gadget, messing with the squares while he tries his hardest to get them to work.

They glow a deep purple for a few seconds before the wall towards the back of his cell melt into a void portal. He stuffs the cubes into his pocket, before looking back at the cell.

"Goodbye, old friend, " he mused, taking a few steps towards the portal. He's fairly slow though, and he drags his feet. Once he reaches the portal, he sticks his arm in, as though reaching for something.

"Hey!" He doesn't wait to find out why the awoken guard was yelling, he plunged through the abyss just as the cell door opened. Shouts of protest from other prisoners rang out as guards filled in the cell just as the portal disappeared. Fear rippled through them, as though wind over a lake.

"Alert the reef, Drago has broken his cage, " one spoke towards the front, causing several to take off away from the cell in a full sprint towards the door. She walked forward tracing the wall with her finger, going over the residue left behind. She frowned, pulling her finger away from the wall.

"Tell them darkness was involved, " she growled at another guard, earning her a nod as the guard scurried away. She turned to look at the remaining guards all shocked and awaiting orders.

"Back to your posts, ladies." She ordered, they dispersed within seconds, calming other prisoners and pulling them back into order. Most of the guards were female, all tall and muscular. One, in particular, hurries towards his cell looking almost sick with anxiousness.

"Jaiylan, she has sent word to the light-bearers... She says they will take care of it, " the guard, Jaiylan, clenches her jaw.

"If it's what she deems best." She turns to glare at the tally marks. Her face showing immediate signs of disdain. "They didn't do well the first time,"
