Hi, hi! I am back with yet another family feels one-shot. The amount of these that I have been writing is making me lean towards just retitling this book to be called my one-shots. It would still most likely be filled mainly with romance one-shots, but it would also just include fics such as this and more platonic relationships. I am really leaning towards it instead of making another book just cause I have this feeling that I won't be updating it if I end up making another. At the same time, I love platonic friendships and family moments, so it may end up being updated endlessly. I don't know. But, nonetheless, I'm going to think this through for a bit longer and let you know. This one is a Haikyuu themed one-shot and it is about Kageyama and Daichi. Don't ask me how or why, but for some reason the notion of the two of them being brothers got stuck in my head and then a bunch of fic ideas were born. This is one of a few fic ideas I have if I remember correctly, so please look forward to them. Anyway, this fic pretty much plays with this idea of how Kageyama would be if he had a brother and if he would change or not. With that said, let's get right into the story!
"Come on, Tobio!" Daichi calls, "You don't want to be late on your first day."
"Yeah, yeah," Tobio huffs as he adjusts his bag on his shoulder. The Sawamura brothers walk beside one another down the path leading towards their high school. Daichi has a smile on his face that contrasts with Tobio's stiff frown. Daichi is looking forward to Tobio's first day at Karasuno. More so, he's looking forward to having his prodigal younger brother as a member of the volleyball club that he just so happens to be the captain of. Tobio, although he doesn't look like it, is just as excited about joining the team. At least, Daichi thinks he is. He knows that his younger brother breathes volleyball, but they haven't really spoken much about him joining Karasuno's team or how he feels about it. Then again, they don't talk much about anything.
When they were younger, they used to talk all the time. They would always tell each other their problems or worries. They were each other's support systems, especially since they're parents weren't often there. They were closer than most siblings were. It helped that they both held this deep love for volleyball. They bonded over late nights and hour filled weekends of practicing their sport.
They were the only ones who understood how important volleyball is to the other. Daichi found volleyball to be not only a part of his life, but a part of himself. The fact that Tobio shared the same passion for the sport just made it that much more special. And Tobio, who was often teased about his obsession at school, could always find a comforting shoulder in Daichi. It is because of his brother that Tobio was never alone.
It wasn't until Tobio went to middle school did things change. Daichi, to this day, never understood why. But, his brother went from being open and cheeky to stoic and easily angered. He shut Daichi out. He wouldn't talk to him about anything. Even volleyball. No matter how much Daichi tried, Tobio wouldn't budge. And so, the brothers who were once very close became distant strangers to one another.
Daichi and Tobio step into the pavilion at the front of the school where the rest of the student body have already begun to gather. The brothers make their way through the crowd towards the front doors and into the building. Once inside, Daichi turns to look at Tobio. "The interest meeting is in the left gym after school," Daichi states, "You're coming, right?"
"Of course I am," Tobio answers. Daichi nods his head. Knew it. Tobio could never say no to volleyball. He turns to look at his brother and tell him something else, but stops himself when he notices that no one is standing in the spot beside him. His eyes flick to down the hall and sighs when he spots his younger brother walking off. "Have a good day..." Daichi sighs.

"Hey, Captain," Tanaka calls out. Daichi turns around and smiles when he sees his teammates walking over to him. Sugawara flashes his classmate and friend a wide smile while Tanaka saunters over with his bag thrown over his shoulder. "Heading to the gym?" Sugawara asks.
Daichi nods, "I'm looking forward to meeting our new first years."
"As am I!" Tanaka announces, puffing his chest out.
"Oh, stop that," Sugawara says, thwacking the side of the second year's head and sighing, "We're not trying to get new blood to join a gang."
"Suga! Come on! How else are the lower classmen going to learn to respect me?" Tanaka exclaims. Daichi chuckles under his breath as he starts to walk again towards the gym. Sugawara and Tanaka follow him standing at each of his sides. "Do you guys remember that setter from Kitagawa?" Daichi questions.
"That crazy prodigy from the middle school tournament?" Sugawara's eyebrows raise, "Of course, I do! He leaves quite the impression."
"Yeah, he was nuts," Tanaka says, "I wonder where that kid went...I'm not looking forward to playing against him..."
"Well, you won't have to worry about that, Tanaka," Daichi says, "He's enrolled here at Karasuno." The volleyball captain is met with complete silence. Daichi frowns in confusion. He looks to his left and then his right. Sugawara and Tanaka have shell-shocked expressions on their faces. Their mouths are wide open and their eyes bug out of their heads. "Y-you're kidding, right?" Sugawara stutters.
"A player like that is joining our team!?" Tanaka exclaims. Daichi can't help but smile at their reactions. His chest warms with pride at the positive impressions that his teammates have of his brother. The fact that they are this surprised is just a testament to how strong of a player Tobio is. And it is something that makes Daichi very, very proud. "Why is he joining Karasuno?" Sugawara asks him. Daichi opens his mouth to respond, but stops when he hears a loud shout coming from the gym. He frowns when he recognizes the voice of his brother. He bounds forward, taking leaping steps. Sugawara and Tanaka trail behind him. Once he is at the door, he swings it open to reveal Tobio and a short orange haired kid arguing with one another. The two freeze when they hear the slam of the door. They turn to look at the three newcomers with sheepish expressions. "Well, well, well, who do we have here?" Tanaka questions in a loud tone. He tries to step forward, but is stopped by Sugawara, who pulls him back by his shirt. Tanaka yelps and flashes the third year an angry expression. Sugawara gives his own angry look to Tanaka, who quickly surrenders with a wary smile. "Hi! Are you here for the volleyball interest meeting?" Sugawara asks as he steps into the gym. The two nod their heads and bow to their seniors. "It's nice to meet you," Sugawara continues with a smile, "I'm a third year setter and the team's vice-captain, Koshi Sugawara."
"I'm Ryunosuke Tanaka," the second year student announces proudly, "I'm the team's wing-spiker. It's nice to meet cha..."
"And I'm Sawamura Daichi, a third year and Karasuno's captain," Daichi finishes with a smile, "We're happy to have you on the team." The orange haired kid starts to open his mouth to speak, but is beaten to it by his fellow first year. "My name is Kageyama Tobio. I am a setter from Kitagawa Middle," Tobio states. Daichi's brows furrow in confusion at the name his brother uses. Kageyama is their mother's maiden name. Why would Tobio introduce himself using that name? Daichi doesn't get another second to think about this though as he is pulled from his thoughts as a blur of orange passes before his eyes. "I'm Shoyo Hinata!" The kid exclaims, "I'm a first year student from Yukigaoka and I'm going to be Karasuno's ace!"
Tobio snorts, "Not anyone can be an ace..."
"What was that?" Hinata questions with narrowed eyes.
Tobio sighs, "I said that dumbasses like you can't be an ace."
"Oh yeah! Watch me!" Hinata jumps up and shouts right into Tobio's ear. The dark haired setter seethes and whirls around to fixate Hinata with a death stare. "All you're going to do is waste another three years of your life," Tobio spats.
"Excuse me!" Hinata shouts, "I'm not the same player I was a year ago! I've improved!
"Sure..." Tobio rolls his eyes.
"Serve the ball to me! I bet you I can return every one!" Hinata boasts. Tobio opens his mouth to retort but is cut off when Daichi stands right in front of him. He fixates him with a steady glare and Tobio presses his mouth into a firm line. He usually isn't one to back down like this, but when it comes to his brother, he knows that he can't win. "Stop it," Daichi states, "Both of you. Volleyball is a team sport. That means that while the two of you are in this gym, you won't argue. You won't bicker. You won't even look at each other the wrong way. If you do, you are not welcome to play on Karasuno's team. I don't care how good of a player you are. I don't allow this type of behavior. Am I clear?"
"But-" Hinata starts.
"If you're not okay with that, you can walk out of the gym right now," Daichi says, crossing his arm over his chest. Hinata's mouth drops open in shock, not expecting to be scolded by the captain on his very first day. He looks over at Tobio, whose face is just as blank as usual. If anything, he looks a bit annoyed with the captain. "Yes, captain..." Tobio answers in a monotone voice. Hinata's eyes bug out of his head before he quickly murmurs the same thing, wondering why Tobio is conceding so easily.

At the end of the interest meeting, Tobio and Daichi are walking back home together. Neither of them speak as the setting sun touches their skins. "Let's eat at the udon place for dinner," Daichi says, "I'm too tired to cook."
"I just want to go home," Tobio responds.
"Are you going to cook then?" Daichi asks. Tobio looks over at his brother for a moment before turning his head back to the sidewalk. "Can we do takeout?" Tobio questions.
"Deal," Daichi states with a nod. The two continue walking, making their way to the restaurant that is between their school and their home. They fall back into silence once more as the sounds of crickets start to echo and cars driving home after a long work day whiz by. It isn't until they've crossed a couple more blocks does Tobio break the silence. "Would you really have kicked me off the team?" He asks.
Daichi looks over at him before humming, "Yeah, I would have." Tobio whips his head to the side and flashes his brother an incredulous expression. "I'm not going to be doing you any favors cause you're my brother, Tobio," Daichi sighs.
"I'm not asking you to do me any favors," Tobio huffs, "I don't need it."
"Oh, yeah, mister hotshot volleyball prodigy," Daichi says in a mocking tone, "You should be on the cover of Volleyball Monthly or something...is that is? Oh...mister Tobio! Please look over here so I can take a picture!" He turns around and pretends to be holding a camera. He waves it around Tobio's face, clicking a fake shutter button and making obnoxious flashing sounds. Tobio rolls his eyes as he pushes his brother's arms away. "Stop it, you're embarrassing me," Tobio frowns. Daichi smirks at his brother's reaction before standing up straight. He clears his throat and sighs. "In all seriousness...you're trying to join a team, Tobio," Daichi says, "If you want to play at Karasuno, you need to work with your teammates." Tobio opens his mouth to say something else, but is stopped as Daichi reads his mind. "No matter how much they may infuriate you," Daichi states. Tobio lets out a breath and nods his head in understanding. He lets it go, knowing his brother is firm about this matter. He can make do with it. Even if Hinata is an annoying overgrown orange. Anything if he gets to play volleyball. "You're not going to be like that at every practice, are you?" Tobio questions.
"Like what?" Daichi responds, "Like a parent scolding their child?"
"Yeah," Tobio murmurs, "It's embarrassing."
"Well, stop acting like a little brat and then I won't have to," Daichi states. Tobio huffs, but doesn't say anything in return to his brother. Daichi nods his head before clearing his throat and asking about the one thing that has been bothering him for hours, "Speaking of embarrassing...since when did you go by Kageyama? Did you change it cause of me?"
Tobio looks at Daichi for a second before stiffly nodding, "Yeah, I did. I'm going to the same school as my older brother and trying to join the volleyball team that he's the captain of. You would change your name too."
"Okay, ouch, since when has being my brother been a bad thing?" Daichi asks. His expression solemn and his eyes filled with hurt. He looks to Tobio for an answer. He wants to know, no, he needs to know why. Tobio doesn't let much hurt him. He's stronger than that. He wouldn't change his name because he was worried about his classmates or teachers pointing out he was related to Daichi. Something like that wouldn't even phase Tobio. But, then why would he do this? And why is he hiding it from Daichi. "Don't make that face," Tobio huffs, "You should be happy that I changed my name."
"Why would I be happy about this?" Daichi asks.
"It's not that deep, Daichi," Tobio scoffs, "It's just a name."
"It may not be something important to you, but it is to me, Tobio," Daichi shakes his head, "That name makes us family. It makes us brothers. And I've always treasured that fact that you're my little brother...I can't imagine what life would be like if I didn't have you. I thought you felt the same way."
Tobio rolls his eyes, "What does all that sappy shit have to do with me changing my name? Are you going to make me change it back or something?"
"Tobio..." Daichi murmurs as his chest aches slightly at the brash words being thrown his way.
"What, Daichi?" Tobio huffs as they come to a stop in front of the udon restaurant where a young couple are walking out the door. They look at the brothers with curious expressions, wondering what is up with them before making their way down the street. Daichi lets out a sigh before shaking his head, "Nothing...let's just get dinner and go." With those words, Daichi heads inside the restaurant leaving Tobio, who stares at his brother's retreating form. Tobio's annoyed expression falls as an empty look passes through his eyes. "It's better that I did this," Tobio mutters to himself, "You're not going to want to be my brother anymore..."
———————
A couple of days later, Tobio and Hinata are panting heavily as they jog over to their belongings. They dig through their bags before grabbing their water bottles and taking massive gulps. They then position themselves on the ground, unable to stand for a second longer. Daichi sighs as he looks at the first years from where he sits on a bench, "You two really should take it slow. At this rate, you'll lose the three on three match."
"Wah! Captain!" Hinata exclaims, "That's mean."
"We're not going to lose," Tobio states at the same time through narrowed eyes.
"Okay, okay!" Daichi chuckles as he holds his hands up in surrender, "I'm just trying to tell you guys not to push yourself too hard. It's just a practice match to see if you would be a fit for the team or not. Even if you lose, it's not like that will determine if you get on the team. It's more so based on what you show while on that court...and the teamwork that you have..."
"How many times are you going to mention teamwork?" Tobio huffs, "I've been serving the ball to Hinata."
"Yes, but you've also been bickering like crazy," Daichi says simply.
"I can be on the same court as him without strangling him," Tobio deadpans, "That's the best you're going to get."
Daichi sighs, "I guess beggars can't be choosers..." Tobio nods his head as he grabs his towel from his bag to run it over his face. At the same time, Hinata pulls his phone out to check if he has any missed calls. "Ahh! Look at the time!" Hinata shouts, "We've been practicing for hours!"
"That's what I've been trying to tell you guys," Daichi tuts, "Don't you think it's time to call it a night?" Tobio and Hinata share a look with one another before shrugging. They slowly grab their bags and make their way over to Daichi. The captain gets to his feet and gestures for the two to start walking, "You did good work today guys..."
"Thank you," The first years state with a slight bow before beginning to walk. Hinata calmly pats the volleyball in the air as he moves alongside the Sawamura brothers, a rhythmic thump thump thump echoing along with his footsteps brushing against the ground. They don't talk as they move, too tired from their long practice. It's rather peaceful at the school now that there are no students or teachers bustling around. Only the sound of crickets chirping and the hum of the streetlights above them. "Well, well, well, if it isn't our competition," A voice cuts through the peace. Hinata gapes as a tall figure looms over him, grabbing his volleyball with ease. Daichi and Tobio look over to see a tall blonde and a freckled student standing by Hinata. "Ah, guys, this is Tsukishima and Tadashi," Daichi announces, "They're the other first years trying out tomorrow." At the sound of their name, the two incline their heads to the volleyball captain before turning their attention to their fellow first years. A soft smile plays on Tsukishima's lips as Hinata jumps up and down in an attempt to get his ball back. "Shouldn't grade schoolers be home by now?" Tsukishima asks. Hinata's mouth drops open and he stops leaping like a frog. Tsukishima takes this moment to drop the volleyball right onto the orange haired student's head. Hinata lets out a yelp as he scrambles to catch his ball and hold his head at the same time. Daichi frowns at the actions in front of him, unsure of what to exactly say or if he should stop this. He watches as Tsukishima slides up to his brother with a mischievous glint in his eye. "You're Kageyama from Kitigawa, aren't you?" Tsukishima asks, "What are you doing here out of all places, King?"
"Don't call me that!" Tobio snaps instantly, shocking both Hinata and Daichi. The two have both seen Tobio angry before, but now he is fuming. His hands are clenched into tight quivering fists and he grinds his teeth together harshly. Tsukishima chuckles, "So it is true...you really do lose it when people call you King of the Court..." Daichi frowns, not recognizing the nickname that the blonde first year threw out. Since when has Tobio ever been referred to as the King. And why in the world would it anger him so much. Daichi's eyes flick to look at his brother, whose entire body is quaking. He opens his mouth to say something, but is stopped by the loud shout of a certain orange haired student. "Shut up!" Hinata shouts, "The King title is cool and you're just jealous that you don't have it! Kageyama is an amazing player and he deserves to have such a name!" Tsukishima starts laughing loudly. He shakes his head as his entire body fills with deep guffaws. Hinata cocks his head to the side in confusion as Daichi gets a weird feeling in his stomach. "You really think that King of the Court means that he's a good player?!" Tsukishima says in a degrading tone.
"What else would it mean?" Hinata questions in confusion.
Tsukishima grins, "It's a nickname his middle school teammates gave him. If you were at the finals of the prefectural qualifier tournament, you would have seen why. You see...Kageyema gets-" Before he can even finish speaking, Tobio lets out a loud growl. He glares at Tsukishima before stomping away. "Tobio!" Daichi calls out, "Wait!" His brother ignores him as he continues to move as fast as possible. He rushes after his brother with a concerned expression on his face, the sound of Tsukishima's laughter ringing in his ear, "I guess the King's not a threat after all..."
———————
"Tobio!" Daichi huffs as he trails after his brother into their shared apartment. His brother doesn't answer him as he rushes to his room. Daichi stumbles as he kicks his shoes off and drops his belongings onto the floor. He speeds over to Tobio's, not even bothering to knock on the door as he bursts in. He is met with Tobio's back, which is stiff as it unpacks his gym bag. "Get out of my room," Tobio mutters.
"We need to talk," Daichi states.
"I don't want to," Tobio responds.
"You don't have much of a choice," Daichi says as he walks over and sits on Tobio's bed. The black haired first year sighs as he turns around and fixates his brother with an unamused expression. "What?" Tobio questions.
"What?" Daichi repeats with a deadpan stare, "Really?" Tobio shrugs and starts to turn back around again but is stopped when Daichi reaches over and tug at his arm. "What's with that nickname?" Daichi asks.
"It's nothing," Tobio says stiffly.
"It's not nothing," Daichi responds, "I saw your face, Tobio. That name...it hurts you." Tobio doesn't say anything. His eyes burn a hole into the ground as his hands clench into tight fists. "You...you're making this a bigger deal than it is," Tobio frowns.
"I should be making it a big deal!" Daichi exclaims, "If my little brother was getting bullied, I should have known and I should have-"
"I wasn't being bullied!" Tobio cuts him off, "I....that name wasn't my teammates being mean or making fun of me..."
"Then, what was it?" Daichi asks. Tobio doesn't answer right away. His eyes become distracted. His shoulders tense. Daichi looks at his brother with a frown on his face. "Tobio?" He calls. Tobio's eyes flick upwards to meet Daichi's and flecks of hurt shine through faked indifference. "It was a name they gave me because of how I acted when playing," Tobio says through clenched teeth, "It wasn't bullying cause it was true...they were just calling me what I was..."
"And what is that, Tobio?" Daichi digs deeper.
"A tyrant," Tobio answers, "A demanding asshole who doesn't cooperate with his teammates."
"You're not like that," Daichi states.
"How would you know?" Tobio huffs, "We haven't played together in years."
"Even if it has been a while, I've still played volleyball with you longer than anyone on your middle school team," Daichi explains, "I'm the one that taught you how to play and you are no tyrant, Tobio. You just have a strong love for the game. You're a passionate player that has dedicated more hours to perfecting your craft than anyone. It's admirable."
"Not everyone thinks that way, Daichi!" Tobio bursts, "Most people can't put up with my seriousness about volleyball like you can."
"Still! They didn't have to mock you!" Daichi shakes his head, "It's wrong...you know that Tobio, right? They were bullying you."
"How many times do I have to tell you!? They weren't bullying me! I deserved it...I...." Tobio exclaims before slowly becoming quiet. His lips press into a firm line and he stiffly turns back around, so that Daichi can't see his face. Daichi's heart aches. His little brother thinks he deserves those harsh words. He never would have expected something like this, especially from teammates. They're supposed to have Tobio's back. They should be bringing him up, not shoving him down. "Why did you never tell me?" Daichi asks.
"Like you cared..." Tobio scoffs, "I saw more of mom and dad than I did you these past few years."
"That's not true-" Daichi starts.
"Stop it," Tobio cuts him off in a stiff and annoyed tone, "We're not close. We never have been. Just...get out of my room." Daichi heistates for a moment. He looks at the back of his brother's head with a hurt expression on his face. A part of him wants to reach out again. He wants to try to further connect with his brother like he did before, but he knows when he's not welcome. A wall has been placed between them and Tobio is pushing at it. He's shoving him out. Soon enough, Daichi is going to be completely removed from Tobio's life. And then their relationship will truly be in shambles. That is if it isn't already. "Fine," Daichi states. He pushes himself up from the bed and slowly makes his way out the door. As he does, he digs his hands into his pocket to pull out his phone. He doesn't look as he presses against the keypad and brings the device to his ear. "Hey," Daichi says as he slips into his own room, "Can you give me advice?"
"About?" Sugawara says over the phone. Daichi launches into an explanation about the rift building between himself and his younger brother. He makes sure to avoid mentioning Tobio's name, knowing that if he were to tell his friend who his brother really is, it would only make things worse. Sugawara listens intently as Daichi speaks. He doesn't cut in, allowing the team captain to fully explain what has happened. When he is finished, Daichi's eyes are watery and he sniffles slightly. "I just...I don't know how to fix this," Daichi stutters.
"Well, maybe you really need to sit down and talk to him," Sugawara states.
"I have been," Daichi huffs.
"You've been talking to him for like two minutes and then backing out when he says something that hurts your feelings," Sugawara sighs, "Which for the record...he doesn't actually mean any of those things he's saying. He's just lashing out."
"Even if he's just saying it to get rid of me, what makes you think that me trying to force the conversation is a better idea?" Daichi asks.
"Cause it shows that you actually care," Sugawara says.
"I do care!" Daichi exclaims.
"Not in his head," Sugawara says, "And not since middle school...you two haven't talked in ages! You can't expect things to just stay the same as it was when you were kids. You're different people and you've gone through different things. Can you tell me honestly that it was just your brother who wasn't talking to you these past few years...or were you also not talking to him either?" Daichi doesn't respond to those words. He thinks to himself about all this time that has passed. The moments that he shared with Tobio. The way their nightly dinners became few and infrequent as Daichi spent time with his high school friends. The way Tobio would wake up hours before Daichi cause his middle school was farther away. The weekends where they would be in their rooms rather than with each other. Those times where they could talk, but they both chose to remain tight-lipped and silent. "What do I do, Suga?" Daichi questions, his voice cracking.
"You try harder this time, Daichi," Sugawara responds, "Even when you think it's enough, try just a bit more..."
———————
The following night after the tryout practice match, the Sawamura brothers enter their shared apartment exhausted. Their clothes are still damp with sweat and this hair sticks to the sides of their heads. They drag their feet as they slowly make their way into the kitchen. Daichi immediately fills up two mugs with water and slides one over to Tobio. The black haired setter takes it without a word and starts to sip from it diligently. "We have instant ramen or leftover curry from yesterday," Daichi says.
"Curry," Tobio answers simply.
"I'll make it after I shower..." Daichi says.
"Let me go first," Tobio states, standing from his seat.
"No way, you waste all the warm water," Daichi huffs, shoving Tobio back into his seat by pushing on his head. He makes a face as he brushes against Tobio's damp locks before quickly pulling away. He wipes his slightly damp palm against his pants and flashes Tobio a disgusted expression. "That's why I need a shower first," Tobio says as he pushes Daichi out of the way and makes his way to the bathroom.
"Be quick!" Daichi huffs, "Or I'm eating all the curry!"
"I'll spike a volleyball into your face if you do!" Tobio shouts.
"I'd like to see you try!" Daichi exclaims. The only response he gets is the sound of the faucet turning and the shower starting to run. Daichi grabs his mug and sighs as he sips from it. As he drinks, he realizes that his interaction with Tobio is just like they used to have in the past. A soft smile tugs on his face. He takes a deep breath before slowly nodding to himself. He's going to fix things with Tobio. He knows it won't be easy, but he's going to give it his all. Even if it takes all night, Tobio and his relationship is going to go back to the way it used to be.
An hour and a half later, Tobio and Daichi sit across from one another enjoying their curry dinner. They don't talk as they eat, but Daichi's eyes keep flicking up to look at Tobio, waiting for the right time to bring this all up. "You did well today," Daichi states.
Tobio grunts in response, "Thanks..."
"Karasuno is lucky to have you and Hinata on the team," Daichi says, "That quick was amazing." Tobio nods his head as he shovels more food into his mouth. Daichi sighs as he grabs his water and takes a sip. He looks back at Tobio who is almost entirely done with his food. He presses his lips into a firm line before taking a deep breath. "Tsukishima was on my team and all but if he mentioned that whole king thing one more time...I think I would've punched him," Daichi states. Tobio stiffens at those words and looks up at Daichi with narrowed eyes. Daichi clears his throat before continuing to ramble, "I'm glad that Hinata told him off cause it wouldn't look good for me as a senior and the captain of the team to punch a prospective player...you know?" Tobio stares at him with a blank, unreadable expression on his face. He doesn't speak as he gets out of his seat and starts to walk away. "Tobio, wait!" Daichi calls out.
"Why?" Tobio huffs.
"We need to talk," Daichi states, "And not just for a few minutes, we are going to talk until everything we haven't told one another these past few years are out in the open."
Tobio shakes his head, "I don't understand why you suddenly care so much."
"I've always cared, Tobio...I just...I didn't show you it for a long time and that's my fault," Daichi says, "But, I'm here now and I want to hear about it..."
"You...you can't do this!" Tobio scowls, "You can't just act the way you have and do the things you did and suddenly decide to just..." He falls silent after that, fixing an annoyed glare at his brother. His hands are clenched into fists and he looks seconds away from leaving. He doesn't though. He remains firmly in his spot. "Tell me what I did, Tobio," Daichi states, "Tell me cause I have no idea and I want to fix it."
"It's not something that can be fixed," Tobio frowns.
"I can still try," Daichi says. Tobio doesn't speak at first. His face, still upset. His body, a frozen statue. Daichi looks at him with understanding eyes. He doesn't push him to speak, waiting for his brother to open up on his own. "Do you remember what you told me when you went to middle school?" Tobio whispers. Daichi's brow furrows as he tries to think back to that time. It's a blurry image in his head with muffled voices late at night. He remembers it just being the two of them. Not unusual. But, he can't remember what they spoke about. "You said that in a few years...you and I would play on the same volleyball team," Tobio states, "You said we would go to the same school and play together." Daichi's eyes widen slightly and his heart feels heavy in his chest. He remembers now. He had promised that. He had told his younger brother, who always felt alone, that he would be with him. But, he wasn't. "When I entered Kitagawa, you had already switched to a different middle school," Tobio says stiffly, "I tried to go with you, but I needed mom or dad's permission and you know how hard it is to get in contact with them. So I stayed there by myself..."
"Tobio...I'm so sorry," Daichi says, "I should have remembered...I don't know how..." He stops when Tobio holds a firm hand up, halting his rant. "I'm not upset that you forgot about the promise we made," Tobio says, "It's whatever...I was more hurt then...now...that you forgot about me..." The aching in Daichi's chest seems to build in that moment. His lips curl into a tight frown. "You were off in your new school with your new friends and teammates," Tobio explains, "You were happy and enjoying yourself and you never stopped to realize that I was struggling...that I didn't have anyone with me. There wasn't anyone to talk to. No one understood. They all thought I was weird and I felt...I felt so alone..." Daichi surges forward as soon as he hears that. He wraps Tobio in a tight grip and squeezes him. His younger brother stiffens in his hold before letting out a shaky breath as Daichi begins to whisper I'm here and I'm sorry interchangeably. His voice cracks as he speaks, his eyes filling with tears as the guilt of hurting his brother tears at him. Tobio squeezes his own eyes shut, not wanting to burst into tears. "Usually I would have you...even if it wasn't at school...I would have had you at home...but you were never there," Tobio murmurs, "And it...I think it broke something in me."
"Tobio..." Daichi breathes.
"That's when I started acting differently on the court...every mistake...every failed shot...it got to me," Tobio's hands clench into fists, "I couldn't stop myself from yelling. Deep down...it wasn't their fault. I just...I couldn't do anything right...and volleyball...volleyball is the one thing I've always been able to do right. But, even that was going wrong! So they called me a tyrant because of it. They called me the King of the Court. They wouldn't hit my serves. They refused to play if I was on the court...and they...they were right to do so. I was a horrible person. I let my emotions get the best of me. I was...if you saw...you would hate me...Daichi..."
"Is that why?" Daichi asks.
Tobio nods, "I changed my name to Kageyama so they wouldn't know...so I had no ties to Sawamura Daichi...the up and coming player in Karasuno. You didn't deserve to have the King of the Court as a little brother. You..." Tobio's voice dies out as he lets out a choked sob. Daichi's hold tightens as tears continue to stream down his face. "It's okay, Tobio," Daichi says, "It's going to be okay..."
"I don't want to be the King of the Court anymore," Tobio whimpers.
"You won't be," Daichi states, "I'll make sure of it. I'll help you, Tobio. As your captain and as your brother....the team will help you too. You're not alone, Tobio. Not anymore. Not ever again." Tobio sniffles as he slowly nods, burying his face into his brother's neck. Daichi squeezes him tightly, his own eyes flooding with tears that just don't seem to stop. They don't move, crying softly and holding one another up. It is Tobio who finally breaks the silence as he becomes self-conscious of the fact that he's been hugging his brother for so long. "I didn't tell you all this so we would start crying..." Tobio's voice cracks.
"I know," Daichi nods.
"I didn't tell you this to make you feel guilty either," Tobio says.
"Yeah, well, I feel pretty bad," Daichi sniffs.
"Good," Tobio scoffs. The brothers burst into a fit of laughter. They slowly pull away from one another with shaky smiles on their faces and tear streaked cheeks. Their eyes meet one another and their giggles slowly die down as the room becomes serious. "I want you to know that I never meant to ignore you," Daichi says, "I didn't even realize that I wasn't reaching out to you until recently. I'm so so sorry, Tobio. Listen...even when you feel alone, I want you to know that you never really are. I am always here. I promise." Tobio nods his head as he wipes at his eyes. He flashes his brother a small smile to which Daichi returns without missing a beat. It's at that moment that things change between the two of them. It doesn't go back to the way it used to be. It can't. Rather, it becomes something new as the brothers come to an understanding with one another.
———————
The following day, Daichi and Tobio arrive at the gym together. The rest of the team have already gathered inside, warming up before today's practice. "Captain! Kageyama!" Tanaka exclaims, "What's with you slowpokes?! Practice started like ten minutes ago!"
"Practice doesn't start until the captain arrives," Daichi says with a slight smirk. Tobio lets out a scoff under his breath, an action that leads to Daichi elbowing his side. Tobio dodges before jogging over to the side bench and dumping his bag onto the floor. Daichi shakes his head with a fond expression on his face as he walks over to join his brother. "Where were you anyway?" Sugawara asks.
"Slept in," Daichi answers as he takes his water bottle out of his bag.
"And you Crappyama?" Hinata questions, sidling up next to the setter. Tobio flashes Hinata an annoyed expression before turning away and unzipping his jacket. "Same," Tobio states.
"Huh?" Hinata exclaims with a confused expression, "You slept in? You!?"
"Shut up," Tobio huffs as he tosses his jacket and starts to stretch.
"I just don't understand!" Hinata rambles, "You always wake up early! You like to go for morning runs! You need to beat me to practice! You would never be late just to sleep in!"
"I told you to shut up!" Tobio shouts, "What's it to you what I do with my mornings!?"
"Come on guys...let's not argue," Sugawara says, scratching the back of his neck.
"Suga's right," Daichi says in a loud voice, "We don't have any time to waste with things like this. Everyone gather around!" The team all make their way over to the benches. They huddle in a messy semicircle and turn their attention fully to their captain. "Okay, so first things first...we have a new teammate," Daichi says calmly.
"What!?" The rest of the team, sans Tobio shrieks.
"I thought that the team was already decided," Tadashi murmurs.
Tsukishima adjusts his glasses, "It's a little unprofessional to add someone now, don't you think?"
Daichi shrugs, "Maybe, but I couldn't say no when the kid approached me."
"Is he that good?" Hinata asks with widening eyes.
"He's great," Daichi says, "And I'm not just saying that cause I'm biased either."
"Biased?" Kiyoko questions.
"Oh, the new player is my little brother," Daichi explains.
"Brother!?" The entire team shrieks once more.
"You mentioned that your brother played volleyball before," Sugawara muses, "I didn't expect for him to transfer here to Karasuno."
"What position does he play?" Hinata asks. The rest of the team nod their heads in agreement. They look at their captain with rapt interest. "He's a setter," Daichi states.
"No way! Another one!" Tanaka exclaims.
"Do we really need another setter?" Tsukishima asks.
"We already have Kageyama and Suga..." Kiyoko comments.
"Unless he's just there for backup or something..." Tadashi mutters.
"Oh, no, he's going to be playing," Daichi states, "He'll probably be in the first string." Everyone's eyes immediately flick to stare at Tobio, whose facial expression appears bored and uninterested. "What?" Kageyama asks simply.
"Kageyama!" Hinata exclaims in an over-dramatic manner, "Aren't you upset?"
"No," Kageyama states.
"Huh!?" The team choruses in a mixture of confusion. They immediately start talking over one another and calling out to the black haired first year, who seems more peeved by the team's loudness than the fact that a new setter would be joining the team. Daichi watches with an amused expression on his face, not saying a word and allowing for the chaos to continue. Usually, he would be snapping at them to focus, but he couldn't help himself today. He just had to trick them. "This is so stupid, Daichi," Tobio calls out. The younger meets his brother's eyes with a deadpan expression on his face. Daichi lets out a breath as he crosses his arms over his chest and shakes his head. "You're no fun, Tobio," He says.
"I don't understand what's the point," Tobio frowns.
"Look at their faces," Daichi responds.
"They look confused," Tobio states.
"Exactly!" Daichi exclaims. Tobio's lips press into a firm line and he flashes Daichi the same deadpan stare as before. He blinks a couple of times before Daichi relents. The captain lets his arms fall to his side and sighs, "Fine, fine..." He takes a deep breath before letting out a sharp whistle. The team falls silent instantly and comes to a halt. Their eyes all naturally turn to face their captain. Daichi clears his throat before gesturing to his brother, "Introduce yourself." The team all follows his outstretched arm until their eyes land on Tobio. Their foreheads scrunch up in confusion before they start to look around and behind him for their new teammate. "My name is Sawamura Tobio..." He states, "I am a setter from Kitagawa and the younger brother of Karasuno's current captain Sawamura Daichi." As Tobio speaks, the team's eyes all whip to stare at him. Their jaws drop open simultaneously. "Ahhh!?!?" The entire team screams in a mixture of shock and disbelief. Once again, they start to shout and circle around Tobio like chickens without their heads. Tobio lets out a sigh as Hinata starts to jump up and down in front of him, while Tanaka yells into his ear. His eyes immediately lock onto his brother, his expression saying he's regretting telling the team. Daichi lets out a chuckle as he watches his teammates swarm his brother. He makes no steps to stop the chaos even when Tobio sends him a pleading gaze. The only thing that he does is smile.
And that's the end. What did you think? I love dynamics between different characters, especially siblings cause of how diverse they can be. I really enjoyed writing this fic and I hope you liked reading it as well. Daichi and Kageyama is definitely not a dynamic we see a lot of, but I found myself attracted to it for some reason, so you will definitely see more of this brotherly bond in future fics. Possibly maybe even in this same universe with more brother-esque moments or even prequels about the middle school days. Let me know what you think about that in the comments below. Please also vote, follow me, add this story to your library, and check out my other one-shots in this book. Until next time, have a great rest of your day!
