Prologue
ETHAN ON
I had been hit by a car while crossing the street at the crosswalk. The light was green for me. It was probably one of those idiot drivers who think they are better than others, just because they have a branded and expensive car.
But anyway. I had closed my eyes, waiting for death. So I could reunite with my parents, who passed away a year ago. But then I woke up, looked around me and saw nothing but white with the ground looking like it was made of clouds. I stood up and looked around some more, trying to figure out what was going on.
Ethan: Okay, is this heaven or the afterlife?
???: You are somewhere in between, young man.
I jumped when I turned to see an elderly man with white hair, a beard, and glasses. His eyes appeared to be closed as he wore what appeared to be a kimono with sandals and a wooden cane.
Ethan: I'm sorry, but who are you, sir?
???: Wow, where are my manners? I'm God. It's a pleasure to meet you, Ethan.
Ethan: Wait, are you God? *Looks at God* Huh? I don't think there is a true picture of what God looks like.
God: Yes, it's true.
Ethan: Anyway, you said I'm between heaven and the afterlife? What does that mean?
God: *Sighs* Well, why don't we have a drink while I discuss your situation.
I agreed to drink with God, this doesn't even seem normal, as we sit at a table with two chairs. That appeared suddenly.
God: What would you like to drink?
Ethan: An orange juice is fine with me.
God snapped his fingers and a glass of orange juice appeared on the table in front of me.
Ethan: Thank you. *Grabs the juice and takes a sip* Now you were going to say.
God: Right and before I explain, I want to give my condolences for your parents. And I want to apologize to you.
Ethan: Thank you. But apologize for what?
God: Well, the difficult situation you are currently in was my fault. You weren't supposed to die right away and I accidentally made you die really early. *bow* I'm really sorry.
I was speechless about what God just told me. I don't think I should die yet, but I can't exactly be mad at God about it. Of course I'm upset that I can't live for my parents, but they wouldn't want me to be mad forever. I looked at God while taking a sip of the juice.
God: You won't complain about me? Or something of that nature?
Ethan: *Looks around* Of course I'm a little upset, but it feels like a dream. I can't exactly stay mad forever.
God: Thank you for not complaining about me like others did before.
Ethan: Before? Has this ever happened before?
God: Not in the last 10 years. I was careless thinking it wouldn't happen, but I got unlucky with it. Again, I'm really sorry.
Ethan: Okay, God. Serious. You shouldn't bow down easily to someone. *Drinks more juice* What now? Am I going to heaven or what?
God: In fact, I was going to give you a chance to live again. I know you would live to see your parents again, but they wanted to live again in a new life and knowing that you are okay. They wanted you to know that you should live again. That is their desire.
I was lost in my thoughts after God told me that my parents were living a new life and wanted me to keep living. I smiled as I looked at God.
Ethan: Well, I accept my parents' wish. I would like to live once more. So how does this work? Will I be able to read, write and speak the same language as the world when I reincarnate?
God: Yes, you will be able to read and write in addition to speaking the same language as the world you go to.
Ethan: *Sighs of relief* That's a relief. Now, how do we determine which world I will be in?
I watched as God pulled out a cardboard box with a hole in the top. I look inside it and there are papers inside.
God: This is how most people determine where they go. Each strip of paper has the name of the universe in which you would be reincarnated. From anime worlds to cartoon series, they are all in this box. Now. *Pushes the box towards me* Take a strip from inside and open it.
I swallowed hard as I looked at the box. I held my breath as I put my hand inside the box and moved until I grabbed a piece of paper. I pulled it out and held it in my hands. I was feeling nervous and felt my heart beating gradually. I held my breath and opened the piece of paper while closing my eyes. It was until God cleared his throat and I opened my eyes. My eyes widened and my mouth was open.
God: Well? Don't keep the suspense! What world will you be reincarnating into?
I smiled big as I had a little party of joy in my head.
Ethan: I will be reincarnated in the "One Punch Man" universe. I've loved this anime for a long time now. I can't believe my luck!
God laughed a little at my reaction and knew I would be happy about it.
God: Now then, since we know what world you are going to. Now is the time to see if you keep your memories or not and if you might have one or more wishes. This machine will determine that. *Moves wrist*
With a flick of God's wrist, a machine appeared before God and me. It looked like those arcade games where the base is rotating with several holes and a single ball would be launched and bounce until it fell into a hole.
Ethan: Oh cool, it's one of those ball drop games you see in arcades. Very cool. *Looks at God* Now, when you said "one or two wishes", what is the maximum number of wishes one can get?
God: Well, there are mainly one-wish slots, but there are two-wish and three-wish slots that are uncommon. They are there, but there is a rare chance to get five wishes. It is difficult to achieve these five wishes as there is a one to ten percent chance of it happening. However, each slot can retain or forget past memories of each of them, so there is a fifty-fifty chance. Now, press the button so we can know whether you keep your memories or not, and how many wishes you will receive.
I nodded and walked to the machine. I pressed the button and watched the ball fall and ricochet until it fell into a crevice. The machine stopped when the ball finally fell into a hole beneath the sprocket. The slit was glowing white and a piece of paper was ejected from the machine. God took the piece of paper and read it. He looked at me as I was getting really nervous about this. I was nervous about whether I would lose my memories or not, not too worried about the amount of desires. I'm done with the suspense.
Ethan: So I'm going to keep my past memories?
God continued to look at me and the paper for a few minutes. He interrupted with a smile and placed his hand on my shoulder.
God: You have nothing to worry about, young man. You managed to keep your memories.
I sighed heavily with relief knowing that I can keep my memories.
Ethan: Oh, that's a relief. The suspense was killing me, so to speak.
God: *Laughs a little* Yes, the suspense was thick enough to cut.
Ethan: What about the amount of wishes?
God: You have been granted two wishes.
Ethan: I kind of got lucky.
God: Yes. But what now? What will you order?
I moved away from God to think. I have two wishes to make and I will go to the "One Punch Man" universe. Now I know that those who died before, if they had the same world as me, would have chosen to have a very OP power right from the start. So I was led to think about some things I would love to have. With my desires defined, I turned to God.
Ethan: God.
God: Hmm?
Ethan: I know that others who have had the chance to be reborn in the One Punch Man universe have asked for extreme power right off the bat. But I don't want that.
God was slightly shocked but intrigued as to where I was going.
Ethan: I want to at least be able to help people as a decent hero.
God: Very good. And what are your desires?
Ethan: My first wish is something I've always wanted. My first wish is that I have an RPG System. Like The Gamer and Solo Leveling mixed together.
God: Very good. And what will be your last wish?
Ethan: I was saving that wish for the end. I wish to have prosthetics that mix technology and magic. One for each member.
God was surprised.
God: Do you want to have these prosthetics on all four limbs? Hmm... very interesting indeed. I usually watch how others are doing when I send them to their new lives, but I think it will be interesting to watch you. So be it, your wishes have been granted. And as a bonus, I'll provide you with a few little things to help you out.
Ethan: Cool. Thank you very much.
God: You're welcome.
It was then that a flash appeared, I then looked at my hands. Both were now metal prostheses. Even though they looked like normal human arms, he knew that wasn't the case. Same thing with your legs.
Ethan: My life is going to change drastically at this point. *Looks at God* Thank you, God. For giving me the chance to live again and in my favorite anime and allowing me to have these incredible prosthetics. {Luckily, I know a little about how to fight. I just hope it's enough until I strengthen myself a little.}
God: *Laughs* You're welcome. Now go. And no offense, but I don't expect to see you again.
Ethan: I say the same.
God: And one more thing. Some things will be different from how you know them.
Ethan: Thanks for the warning.
God then raised his hand as the area turned into a bright white tornado and was getting brighter as it had fully engulfed the area. I briefly heard God's voice for the last time:
God: Good luck, Ethan Smith. I wish you luck.
I had my eyes closed for a moment and when I opened them I was in an alley. And when I looked out of it, I could see an advertisement for a sale in J City.
Ethan: {Looks like I've arrived. To the One Punch Man universe.}
