Silver moonlight danced through the fluttering drapes covering the open window. Late summer nights were your favorite, it was still warm but there was just the slightest chill in the air as the seasons began to change. It was perfect weather for airing out the apartment after a few months of relying on the air conditioner.

Brawny burgundy clad digits traced over your open palm. You lay comfortably sandwiched between the soft mattress and your redhead. He wasn't fully resting on you but he was occupying much of your bare torso. Your fingers slid into his hairline as he closed his eyes listening to your heart thrum. It was hard to believe this calloused, hot headed man could be so gentle. Granted, this wasn't always the case.

Your lips upturned slightly replaying how rough and demanding he'd been only moments before. On occasion he'd allow himself to be vulnerable and lie on you caressing you gently.

Exhaling against your skin he shifted slightly, "Can't sleep?"
You hummed continuing to massage his scalp, "Just lost in thought. I'll sleep soon, honey."

Of all the things Eustass Kid had been called in his life, that pet name coming from your lips was his favorite. He'd never admit it, but you knew. You'd seen his demeanor change and the slight smirk that would grace his painted lips.

The day you met you fell for that simper.

__________

"Can we go somewhere else?" Your large pale friend complained, "It's so hot in here."
"We just came in from outside, Bepo. Once you settle you'll cool down."
"Law's right," you took a seat at the bar of the mostly empty diner you'd just entered, "Let's get you a cold drink."

Your male companions took the two seats to your left as a giant redhead was already occupying the stool to your right. It wasn't long before your gaze wandered to the man next to you. Holding the menu up to hide most of your face, you drank in his sharp stern features. Even sitting quietly he seemed to be brooding. His dark eye liner and lipstick brought out the stark contrast of his pale complexion.

Law's tattooed fingers entered your periphery taking the menu from your hands and turning it right side up, "If you're going to gawk, don't be so obvious, F/N-ya."
"I...I - it isn't," you stammered blushing heavily, "s-shut up."
"You should teach your girlfriend some manners." the redhead sneered.
"Oh, he's not-" you began to explain.
Law leaned into your space to address the stranger with a cocky smirk, "she's not my type."

He punctuated the statement with a salacious wink.

"Law!" you croaked while the man next to you looked on with widening eyes.
"I guess you're not either." your best friend shrugged indifferently, settling back into his seat.
"Sorry about him," you waved regaining his vermilion gaze, "He just likes to get a rise out of people. His boyfriend hates it."
The most amazing laugh rumbled through his chest, "What a fucking weirdo."
"Doctor Weirdo," Law corrected snarkily.
"How are you friends with that guy?"
"He doesn't make it easy." you chuckled, shaking your head.

As he picked up his coffee cup he noticed your demeanor shift along with your gaze.

"That's not government issue." you marveled over his prosthetic.

You weren't sure how you'd missed it before, the polished steel caught the afternoon sun pouring through the window behind him. His left arm was an impressive fabrication that suited his frame. The hinges and joints worked smoothly at his will in perfectly articulated movements. It was beautiful.

"I'd never accept some hunk of shit from the government." he snorted.
Your soft doe eyes raised to him brimming with interest, "That must've cost a fortune, most mechanics aren't willing to compete with the government rates, even if the quality suffers. That's where they get you."

Kid was taken aback for a moment. Not many people took interest in him like this. His stature and attitude didn't really work in his favor either.

"I made it." he finally stated setting the mug down and flexing his prosthetic digits for you.
"So impressive," without a thought you ran your fingers over the cool metal.
"And we've lost her." Law commented flatly.
"I'm sorry." Bepo murmured.
"You always go around touching strangers?" the redhead snorted almost playfully.
Blushing hard, you withdrew your hand, "I get carried away. I'm a fabricator too, Law and I have a practice together."

Private practices were fairly uncommon, because the government could mass produce prosthetics much cheaper. The problem was just that - the product was often cheaply made and with everyday use, had to be replaced completely within a couple of years. You made quality products that cost more but with proper maintenance lasted much longer. With that you were able to build and maintain a clientele that kept you reasonably busy.

"I thought most mechs weren't willing to compete with the government." he smirked down at you.
"I'm not most mechs." you retorted making him chuckle again.
"Such a cocky woman." his painted lips twitched, "I guess you'll have to prove it."

Smiling brightly you swiveled on your barstool outstretching your left leg to reveal your custom self-made prosthetic. Sleek matte black metal extended from your left thigh accented with rose gold rivets, cords and joints.

It was Kid's turn to marvel. The craftsmanship and technique was something to behold. He actually had to keep himself from reaching out to touch it.

"Go ahead, Red." you chuckled, "You look like you'll die if you don't."

His eyes flickered up to meet yours as his neck and ears heated up. Gently he brushed his fingers over your shin and looked back down watching the knee joint bend.

"Titanium, it's nice and light so it won't slow me down but also durable so it'll last." you explained, "not that there's anything wrong with your steel. It suits you and I have to admit I'm incredibly curious about the build with only one hand. You're very talented, Red."

"Kid," he straightened up in his seat while you raised an inquisitive brow, "that's my name."

______________

"Ya gonna tell me what you're thinking about?" your redhead asked nipping your shoulder.
"When we first met." you shivered and ran your fingers through his messy locks.
He laughed, "You were so weird."
"Oh, I love you too." you muttered sarcastically.
"Hey, I came out looking worse here," he continued in a stern but playful tone,"I married you."
"Such an asshole." you chuckled as he pushed himself up to look over you.
"Mhm, but I'm yours."
